Have You Achieved your Target? Happy New Year 2010

Have a successful Harvest in 2010

After 365 days if your farm is exactly 1 year old how many nests would you expect your farm to have achieved? Some may have a target beyond attainable like 1000-2000 nests the firsts year.

This is not untrue I have came across a handful of farmers who expect their farms to achieve such figures. These groups of farmer normally do not own farms before and most of them are very new in Swiftlet farming. Most of them would think that Swiflets farming is similar to Chicken farming where within a year the Birds population would be in thousand.

For me I am more than happy to see 20-50 nests the first’s year, 20 nests for non Prime Zone Areas and 50 nests for Prime Zone Areas.

Of course there are farms that could archive above 50 nests some even few hundred and there are also many didn’t reach 5 nests some have none at all. Farms that have 5 nests and below take up 80% of farms in Malaysia and they are considered failed farm.

There is no standardized rate on how your farms should perform at a given period of time. Different areas the farm located have different rates of performance.

Never set a target that is unattainable, know yourself, your ability, your farm’s location and so on. Setting a target that is beyond attainable would course stress.

I always look at the 3rd year where the growth of 4-10 fold is uncommon provided you have done your homework right.

Look at the brighter side, for those farmers who have farms of less than 5 nests don’t have to worry because you are not the only one. There are thousands out there shared the same faith as you.

Good Farming All 2010!

Decision Solely Based on Pricing

.

The sellers knew very well that no matter what kind of woods they give to the buyers the buyers can't tell the differences especially those woods that sold directly from saw mill to the farm's owner.

.

Call whatever name you want, name them whatever name you wish. They can be Meranti Bukit, Meranti Kepong, Meranti Daun Lebar, Bintagor, Akasia, Chap char......and so on as long the Seller names them and as long you fell good because you heard the seller calls them Meranti.

.

They can be named any type of Meranti as long as you want. Are you certain that what you paid for is what you get? You will never know because you have no idea and do not know how to tell the differences. Because you are not a timber or wood specialist and you have not seen enough Meranti to tell the differences. But for sure one thing you could tell is “what is cheap and what is expensive”. If it is within your budget then it is cheap and if it is above your budget then it would be expensive.

.

So your decision will rely solely on price, not so much on whether you are buying the right type of planks for your farm that will last 5-10 years or fungus resistant or whatever.

.

In other words whether your farm would be successful or otherwise is solely justified by your decision based on pricing factor which has got nothing to do with the Micro and Macro environment.

.

So who should be blamed for all those (80%) failed farms? You know very well…….

.

Good Farming All!

Planks, Sound, Design. Have you got it Right?

.

( the eyes are still not fully develop for seeing )

.

Yesterday I met up with my readers who came to collect some Swiftlets Farming gadgets and Love Potion. They are from Pahang and Ipoh.

.

They were those who started off with no knowledge of swiftlet farming and later on to discover that there are so much more to learn and realized that they were being leaded by the blind.

.

Luckily they discovered it early thru our discussion over teh tarik many things were disclosed. They discovered many things they had done is of no benefit to their farms.

.

One of them just started a farm which is more than 80% completed. He is quite comfortable with what he had done. He showed me the farm’s design and cried that it is well designed one.

.

I pin pointed the errors with logic explanations of how the birds turn and fly when they enter the farm especially young birds. I discovered that his farm design restricts the flying circle of birds. This would make birds to take a longer time to adapt to the farm hence his farm has to wait long time before having many nests. This is a common thing that most farmers did.

.

They also strongly believe that sound is the ultimate criteria of successful farming. Be it the farm of any conditions, which the total micro can be screwed-up if a good sound is played the farm will be successful in no time. Bear in mind Swiftlets develop the sense of smell before their eyes and ears. Once hatched they do not have the seeing and hearing ability until few days or weeks later. So which is more important?

.

One of them showed me the Meranti Planks sample that he had bought for his farm. It is a soft wood. I showed him and compared them with a sample of corner board I have as my Meranti sample I left in my other car. I ask him to look at the line and the pores. It has the tendency to absorb moist. I told him it is not my choice of wood. I don’t use soft wood but many out there claimed birds like soft wood. Well let it be.

.

I prefer hard wood as I am looking at Long term 5- 15 years. I wouldn’t want my planks to be infested with fungus when the birds’ population starts to multiple. It is not that you can’t use soft wood. Go ahead if you want nobody is stopping you anyway you are the one who pays for it. If you use soft wood make sure your RH is not too high. As we know if the Rh is not at the Optimum level then the quality of the nest will be affected. So the solution is use good wood that resisted to fungus, simple! You don’t have to worry about mould and fungus and have good sleep every night.

.

This morning one of them called me up.

.

“James, after thinking about what we had discussed you are right. It makes sense that if we want to get involve in Swiftlet farming we must think about Long Term no point of saving 1 or 2 thousand here later losing much more”.

.

“James, I agree with you the second entrance hole and the roving did not match like what you had said. How come when I showed my farm’s design to many “experts” they all said ok? After thinking about it .It is Logic that the second entrance hole size is not appropriate. “

.

“James, I paid so much for the Planks and yet this is the quality of wood I got. All my woods are of very light type.”

.

Well this is call learning process and there is definitely no short cut in Swiftlet farming. My advice is do not repeat the same mistake twice.

I told him I’m willing to teach are you willing to learn? Do you have the material in you for Swiftlets farming?

.

After that he asks me to visit his farm as soon as possible. Unfortunate I can’t because I am tight up with my visit to East Coast. Well I told him perhaps in few weeks time and I shall call him.

.

Good farming all!.

Picture Of Good Quality Meranti

In respond to the call of my Readers this morning about the Meranti Planks he had bought. Please look at the pictures below and you can see the differences clearly.

One doesn't have to be a Rocket scientist to distinguish this. If you are serious about Swiftlet farming do the best you can. Swiftlet Farming is not a thing that you try out or play-play with as it involves quite huge amount of money.

Here are the Pictures for those who think for a mere Rm1600-3000 they can get High quality Meranti Planks that could last many years with many nests stick to them. Good things Don't come Cheap. Be realistic!

.

( a very successful farm with more than 4000 nests. No compromise as far as wood quality concerned. This is what I call Dark Red Meranti)

.

( a new farm which uses the same quality of wood like the above. Look at the Dark red quality)

.

( Poor quality soft wood. 80% farm now are using such wood. The arrow shows fungus growing from inside before the farm starts the sound. Do you think birds would make nests after that?)
.

(same poor quality soft wood with wood eye. That is why for below 30k renovation you can own a farm. And you are laughing happily because you thought you got a Good Deal..ha..ha.wait 1 year later you will be crying.)

See the differences and learn.

Good Farming all!

Meranti)

This Should be the Way!

Swiftlets part of inner city’s heritage, say breeders

GEORGE TOWN: Swiftlets have been part of inner George Town even before the area was granted Unesco World Heritage status, according to Association of Swiftlet Nest Industry (ASNI) president Carole Loh.

“These birds are Penang’s ‘living heritage’, and the fact that George Town was granted the status despite their existence means they have no impact on Unesco’s decision,

“It is not fair for the state government to force the breeders to move when they were permitted to operate under the 2005 guidelines for the Application of Licence for Birds Nest Industry, Penang,” she said yesterday.

Loh was commenting on Friday’s report stating that the one-year extension given to swiftlet breeders in Penang to continue their operation until next December would jeopardise George Town’s heritage status.

Penang Heritage Trust (PHT) president Khoo Salma Nasution had said that the state government’s decision to extend the moratorium on the breeders would be a breach of Unesco’s heritage management guidelines.

However, Loh explained that it was a misconception that swiftlets’ droppings would destroy the facade of heritage buildings as they only defecated inside the bird houses.

.

Don't Have to be Embarrassed about your Mistake.

I received a call from my Reader that half of his Swiftlets didn’t come back as he observes it thru the CCTV.

.

It is quite strange isn’t it?

.

“James many of my birds didn’t come back. What is the reason”

“I replied, it could be many things”.

.

In fact it is kind of strange that those who called me didn’t tell what they had done to their farms till I prompted them further. I just don’t understand why they didn’t tell me straight. I guess they would feel embarrassed of the things they had done.

.

Come on Guys! What’s wrong with mistakes? Everybody does it. Most important we learn from it and never repeat them.

.

Especially in Swiftlet Farming if you didn’t rectify the problem or mistake you created your farm will never be successful. Face it that is the fact. All of us cannot run away from it. If you think you did something wrong or you had done something that affects the growth of your farm you just have got to admit it and most importantly is to rectify them immediately.

.

If you cannot solve it and you cannot find the solution it shows that you need assistant. Well you could call me if you want.

.

“I replied further, there must be some reasons the birds didn’t come back. There won’t be any smoke if there is no fire”

“Well James to tell you the truth I did some renovation to my farm. I enlarged the entrance hole and changed the sound and did some partitioning.”

.

Here you go ….most did renovation on own accord without knowing the consequences. Later to discover that it became worse after what they had done.

.

I always believe in accepting mistake or failure from here we can learn the major cause that affects the bird’s population.

.

Subsequently you could do some investigations yourself record down the number of birds before the renovation. Take few pictures prior to renovation and compare them. Make record of the internal environment factors such as Temp, Rh, light, etc before and after. Compare them and see what the changes are before and after.

.

It’s fun and interesting if you have the Love for swiftlet farming and I am sure you could find something hidden to be discovered. If your intention and interest is on the monetary side how many kgs could sell for how much then you would find it boring and you will never solve the problems that affect your farm.

.

Trust me that’s the truth.

.

However for those who are into monetary side they could always engage consultants to run and to manage their farms. Provided they find the right consultant otherwise it would be a continuous process where consultants come and go and problem of the farm can’t be solved.

.

Good farming All!

.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

「James,

Not Necesasry The More Tweeters The Better

( every planks has tweeters. Not always the more the better.)

The Sun came out at noon after the rain. The sky is beautiful after the rain with white thin clouds. I call Mr.Y who has 2 farms in Kuantan. We had arranged this meeting a week ago.

.

“MR. Y, I am in Kuantan now at Jalan Gambut near Olympia College.”

“Ok James, that is great I shall be there in 5 minutes”

.

Mr.Y has bought over a 2 years old farm recently together with a good friend on a JV basis. They had just turned on the sound weeks ago.

.

It was a farm at the top of a 3 storey shop lots located in a Prime area. It is a 2 years old farm and has less than 15 nests. Mr. Y bought it at a good price and he is confident that he could turn it around.

.

I was quite hungry as my breakfast was at 6.30am that morning. When Mr. Y arrived I suggested “how about makan first”?

Not bad! There is a restaurant at the same roll of shop that his farm located. So it was like a lunch over meeting and discussion. I asked Mr. Y and his partner please throw as many questions as you wish at me and I will answer them all.

.

I love questions because it helps me to refresh my memory on Swiftlet farming.

..

After lunch we proceed to his farm which located just few step away. The top floor was converted into farm. The previous owner seems to have very little knowledge in Swiftlets Farming. Basically the previous owner just got a consultant to build it and leave it as it is without doing anything other than wait and there were rubbishes and left over construction materials in the farm, claimed Mr.Y.

..

Since taking over the farm Mr. Y had done some renovation on it. They had enlarged the entrance hole, partitioned few sections, installed tweeters and so on.

..

What catches my eyes most was the Tweeter in this farm. This is one of the few farms that I had visited that has many tweeters which many times above the standard average tweeter requirement in farm.

..

I prompted Mr. Y why there are so many tweeters do we really need so many?

..

He replied” since Swiftlets love sound and build nests on top of tweeters so we give them more tweeters. Furthermore it is cheap.

..

Well that make sense but to a certain extend I replied. Mr. Y muted for a while and I am sure he was surprised to hear such statement.

..

There are easily more than 150 tweeters in this farm. To me 40-60 I considered many.

..

As I had always said Swiftlets farming is all about perfection at optimum level but not beyond. Anything beyond this level it will be a threat to the farm itself. Be it temp, Rh, sound, fake nest, partitioning and so on.

.

The optimum number of tweeters in farm would create good sound environment but if it is too many it will defeat the purpose of sound and its effectiveness to entire swiftlets to stay and make nests.

...

We know sound plays an important role, sound could be use to pull the birds to inner parts of the farm. One of the examples is when you install one external sound tweeter at the back of the farm in few weeks you would see shit spots below the tweeter. This shows the single tweeter stand out amongst other tweeters.

.

Now what about having 50 (excluding internal tweeters) of them all over the farm? Would you be able to see 50 spot of shits?……I guess you have the answer already…..

.

If you had visited successful farms that had turned off the sound and if you are observance enough you would notice not all sections of the farm have equal loudness of swiftlet chirping sound. Such environment shows the originality of nature. But I can tell not all farms have such sound environment perhaps only 10%-20%. That’s why 80% farms failed.

.

It is not always the more the better. Take 1 tablet of vitamin a day is good. Try taking 100 tablets a day and see what happens. You would end up in Hospital.

.

Another one is farm should be cooling, try reduce the temp to below 23C and see what would happens or increase above 35C. This is beyond the optimum level already.

.

Too many tweeters in farm would create confusion as the birds wouldn’t know where the main source of sound comes from as almost every foot there are tweeters.

.

Placing them at the right position is of important too. Where the tweeters should be facing and the type of tweeters being used are far more important than the number of tweeters, Of course without forgetting the quality of the sound itself.

.

All factors have to come together in order to attract large number of young birds to stay and make nests in farms. Any part if being neglected then it is hard to have a successful farm.

.

After observing the whole farm I advised Mr. Y what he should do if he wants to attract Swiftlets to stay and make nests in his farm.

.

That included erecting additional partitions. I showed him how the reflection of sunlight that penetrates into his farm that would affect the light density should be blocked.

.

The entrance hole Mr.Y had enlarged is not big enough as it restricts the flying moment of birds that come in. I advised him to enlarge it further.

.

While I was still in the farm I received a call from another farm’s owner which I suppose to meet later to view his farm.

.

Mr. James, I am Mr. C here, I am in front of MGS now. Where are you?”

“Mr.C, I am on my way shall be there in 20 minutes”.

“OK, James,, I will wait for you”.

.

I have to rush there again after that I have to be in Gambang and later at Mentakab.

Good Farming All!

Birds Nests Soup of Kuantan

(It is a wet-wet day)

(a beautiful shop located at Jalan Merdeka)

(some of the exclusive birds nests on display)

( some raw nests on display)
.

Visiting 4 farms in a day that was what I did yesterday and I told myself no more, it is enough of squeezing everything at one go. I was “drop dead” tired.

.

Next time I shall take my own sweet time. What to do so many readers wanted to meet up with me.

.

I was in Kuantan yesterday invited by the owner of Natural Bird Nest Supplies Madam Tan to visit her shop and to discuss some business possibilities. She is a very nice lady who runs a shop selling Birds Nest products. The shop is located in Jalan Merdeka. She is well known for her recipe in Birds Nest Soup. It seemed that people from all over Malaysia travelled to her shop just for this special Birds Nest soup. After trying the first bowl most customers would come back for more claimed Madam Tan.

.

I left K.L in the morning and when I reach Karak the weather was not good it rain almost the whole journey till I reach Kuantan. In fact I was late due to the weather.

.

Madam Tan creates different types of Birds Nests Soup by adding additional special ingredients this is what she is famous for thus her birds nest soup is different from the traditionally made bird nest soup.

.

As I understand from her all their birds’ nests are cleaned by their staff in fact occasionally she cleanses it herself.

.

Natural Bird Nest Supplies also has few Swiftlets farms. The nests harvested from their farms are use for making the birds nest soup.

.

She is also very keen to know more about Swiftlet farming. She seemed to have a great interest in it. Bravo!

.

If you are happened to be in Kuantan do drop in and try the birds nest soup. Never knows you may come back for more.

.

(Next post will be on the 4 farms I had visited)

.

Good farming All!

Jalan Merdeka)

Madam Tan

Natural Bird Nest Supplies

Superiority of Pre-War Shop Farms.

( They even have ventilation roof tile. How could you beat them?)

Why Pre-war Shop lots are more superior in term of Micro condition control than current buildings?

Why farms of pre-war shop lots are more successful?

Why birds like Pre-war Shop lots?

All have to do with the micro conditions. Pre-war shop lots have better micro because the way the buildings were constructed. Nothing superior other than the way it was built.

The walls are thicker.

The roofs are higher.

The inter floor height is higher.

The good quality of old clay bricks.

There are many more advantages besides the above but these few qualities are good enough to attract Swiftlets.

The roof clay tiles are of small sizes therefore it is easier for the hot are to escape from the roof creating a cooler ceiling.

The cross section beams are made of hardwood that resist to fungus and mould. These beams are turned into nesting planks and birds love it.

It could be said almost all things in its favor a good micro.

There are many pioneers out there prefer pre-war shops. There are some specially target these shops and turn them in to Swiftlets Farm.

Good farming All!

Merry Christmas to all Readers

Warmest Wishes for a Merry Christmas!
May all Farms have Good Harvests.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to All readers.

Good Farming All!

.

Should One Install Corner Board in all New Farms.

.

Look at the pictures above , nests were built on 90dg corners. The Swiftlets seem to like these corners so much. These pictures were taken in farm located in the North. All the nesting planks in the farm are without corner boards.

.

The owner didn’t install any corner boards reason being since the birds love the 90dg corners so much then we shouldn’t cover it. Let them build the nests there after few harvests then only install the corner boards.

.

That really make sense and I am sure many have being doing that. The reason of having corner boards installed is to prevent 90dg nests that are lower in price.

.

Some may think differently, their objective is to maximize the birds population first then only thinks about nests quality. It really makes sense if the population doesn’t grow no matter what quality of nests you have it is of useless. So maximizing nests is most important I do agree with it therefore for this reason they don’t install corner boards.

.

To me having corner boards installed is to add additional corners. Instead of having one corner after installed the corner board there will be 2 corners of course it will not be 90dg anymore.

.

Should we install them in all new farms or later after the birds had made nests?

.

Do birds still love them? …………that is for you to guess………

.

Enjoy the pictures.

.

Good farming all!

.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
