James,

James,

You Create Your Own Mess!

too small of a open roof.

inter hole too small hard for birds to maneuver

everywhere is with exhaust fan shows that the farm micro is totally out.

another exhaust fan ...problem...real problem

all windows are only covered with celling board no wonder hot. It should have used bricks.

if one reads my blog and has knowledge in design he definitely won't do this kind of entrance which force the wind inside.

too big entrance.

This farm belongs to my reader Mr.K from Sarawak and was built by a famous person there. He was having a headache and wants to know why birds don’t stay in his farm. He couldn’t figure it out and wants my advice.

I told him all the solutions are right in front of you. It is a matter of how to discover them. I told him that all problems in farm are manmade. In other words it was created by those who are lack in skill in Swiftlet farming. Obviously before a farm is built (shop lot) it is empty. If one is not skillful they would put all the problems in it. So the best is to avoid putting problem in the farm so that in future you won’t have to solve it. It is as simple as that. “Don’t dirty it and you don’t have to clean it up”

By standing in the farm and observe and look at it, one could discover the problems (provided you are as Sharpe as me). Once you know how the problem arises then you could solve them. But I always believe in preventive measure. Why want to mess it up in the first place? Isn’t that stupid?

Well perhaps those who built it might not even know that they have created problems in the farm.

I try to teach Mr.K. The best way to teach other is by making them think. Therefore I ask him questions so that he could remember it the next time.

“Mr.K, why do you need so many exhaust fans in your new farm? “

“James, the consultant says it is to reduce the heat and temperature”

“Mr.K isn’t it when one builds a farm he had already anticipated this problem by putting double layers bricks, Bubble foil and so on. Then the heat problem wouldn’t arise and there is no need for exhaust fans?”

“James, you are right but how come he never thought of that. “

When you look at the above pictures there are so many mistakes. There are many more mistakes found in this farm that I can’t finish writing. If I have to expose them all then it better to demolish the whole farm and build new one.

Obviously I can’t ask Mr.K to do that. He had already spent quite a lot of money to own this sick farm. The only thing I could do is to salvage as much as possible by not incurring too much cost.

Sometimes I hate cleaning up other people mess. Please all readers get the right person to do your farm if you don’t want to clean up the mess later!

Good Swiftlet Farming All!

Weird Swiftlet Farmers

I had stomach cram because of laughing too much. Laughing my guts out almost every other day. Receiving emails and calls from many of my readers. I love them because they make me laugh. Laughing is the best medicine for all things. One particular reader even asked me how to produce Red nests as he owned a failed farm.

I told him get your farm right first before I tell you more about Red nests otherwise you would be lost and may not understand what I am talking about.

Another reader engaged a wrong (half bucket water consultant) consultant and wanted me to talk to his consultant and advise him what to do. In other words I am directing the whole show and his consultant is getting paid while I get none.

Another one is in dilemma because his so called very well known consultant wanted to use magnetic tweeters for internal use and he reads on the Web that most tweeters for Swiftlet farms are of non magnetic (piezo). He was confused and asked my advice.

My replied was” If the consultant can’t even distinguish between Piezo and Magnetic tweeter. I wonder how well he could design a good farm for you. Therefore your farm is on the road to failure even before you start the sound.”

I think for the moment instead of advising and teaching readers what kind of things are needed in farm, and what they should do and what they shouldn’t do in farms. It is better to teach them “How to choose a consultant.” This should be the first step. If one fails the first step then no point of going to the second step.

As I had visited many failed farms sometimes I couldn’t believe what I saw. I told myself how could they build farms like this. Even my Bangla and Indon workers could design better farms.

What to do, the trend now is the more they know nothing the more people like to engage them. I think those who got involved in Swiftlet farming wanted those consultants that know very little. Probably because they afraid the consultants are smarter than them.

So the least you know the more you are in demand. Well, in this case people like me would be least wanted, no wonder we have time writing blog and giving advice to others….ha…ha..ha...

There are many who build Swiftlet farms for others don’t even know the different between Apus-Apus and A. Fuciphagus. To them all that fly in the sky are the same. This also goes to those who DIY their own farms. There was once a reader called me and asks should he put a small PVC pipe across all the planks in his farm so that the Swiftlets could perch on them.

Being a blogger I received many weird emails and calls but somehow I would always try to explain to them. I hope they would appreciate what we have done so far.

Before Swiftlet farming blogs existed to see the internal of a farm would be hard. No one would show their farms to anyone. Today not only pictures of farms are available in the blogs but also advice and techniques on how to build good farm.

Now those who wanted to get involve in Swiftlet farming are very much luckier than us with all information just at their finger tips on the Web.

Somehow these new generations of Swiftlet farmers are still lack the basic knowledge that needed to build good farm. I guess this has to do with personal ability such as observance, sharpness, intelligent, and so on without forgetting choosing a consultant.

Building Swiftlet farm on a Good Land

I was invited to the North by my reader Dr. D to view a plot of land. Dr. D who is a Medical Doctor by profession finds that Swiftlet farming is more interesting than Golfing. He has been talking about this for quite a while and recently took a drastic action to have a Swiftlet farm built on his land.

I left K.L in the early morning to avoid traffic and planning to reach there before noon. As I understood from him it was a Durian farm with some local fruits trees planted around.

He hasn’t had the time to visit his orchard and often leave it to the Kampong people around there to take whatever they want. He was not so much into the money from the fruits especially the Durian. He had bought this orchard many years ago for the craving of Durian and after many years of having Durian he got bore with it and now wanted to build a Swiftlet farm.

Ever since then he seldom visit his orchard. He told me got interested in Swiftlet farming from one evening while having Bak Kut Teh with his friends. At the opposite of this restaurant there was a Swiftlet farm.

While having Bak Kut Teh, they were complaining about the chirping sound from the opposite building and asked the waiter what sound is that. The waiter replied “Burung”. One of his friends replied I heard about this but never really pay much attention. As the sky was getting darker there were thousands of birds swamping into the roof of the building this excited them, claimed Dr.D.

This piece of Land located in a beautiful serenity surrounded with all the Macros needed for a Swiftlet farm. Anyone who is into swiftlet farming would have wanted this type of land. If fact I did jokingly ask him is he willing to sell an acre or two to me?

Not far from this vicinity about 5 km or less there were 4 very successful Swiftlet farms. In fact I knew one of the farm’s owners there. His monthly harvest is more than 15kgs.

Dr.S had bought this land not for the intention of Swiftlet farming but for Durian and he is very lucky.

I reached the main road toward the rubber plantation and Dr.D is already waiting at the side of the road. The land is just 500 meter from the main road. There is tar road leading all the way to his land all I could said is “beautiful”.

The Surrounding here is of Rubber and Palm oil plantations. I love rubber plantation because they produce plenty of termite (flying ants when its rain) and Swiftlet love them.

While there I load the positioning onto my GPS so that I could track this land and its surrounding area and terrain. Perhaps I might buy a land around here to build a standalone whose know?

I advise Dr.D where the best place to erect the building. He needs to clear all those trees and what he needs to do. Dr.D is very new in Swiftlet farming and there are lots of things he needs to Know.

He wanted me to come out with a plan that consists of farm design, sound system, etc. He told me “James I know very little about Swiftlet farming I hope you could help me out and do whatever necessary. I leave the entire land to you

I replied, thanks Dr.D but we have to work together because I want to make sure you learn what Swiftlet farming is about is.

Replied Dr.D, I have spoken to many people but most won’t willing to teach. It is very kind of you James. I jokingly replied, Well I’m willing to teach all the things I knew but could you absorb all of them?

After spending few hours there with hundred of mosquito swamping around you, one could imagine the mosquito bites. Look at the bright side “isn’t this indication of plenty of insect?” I am the food for the insect.

Good Swiftlet farming ALL

James
