Sastisfied with the Harvested Nests

This are the Nests harvested from one of my  Swiftlet  farms last weekend.  It is  2.5 years old Swiftlet farm located in one of the busiest congested town in  Selangor

The weight of  the Green color box is 1.166 kg, it is a large box. The total weight of the Green color box together with Nest is 5.652kg. After deducting  the weight of the box, the nett weight of the Nests is 4.486kg.

Well I am happy with the result of 4.486kg after 2.5 years. I don’t ask for more and I am satisfied.

Everywhere is possible to do Swiftlet farming, but it depends on how you do it. Swiftlet farming is no different from other businesses. It needs skill, right knowledge, courage and perseverance. When I say knowledge, I mean real and genuine knowledge. It is not building or constructing a house and install Nesting Planks and Tweeters. I have seen and visited too many failed Swiftlet Houses, they rarely practice and follow the basic knowledge of Swiftlet farming.

After so many years of providing free information on my blog, people still never learned. I still find many Swiftlet Houses struggling to meet the basic requirement of the Micro (Temperature, Light, etc).

Why?..........Maybethis is the norm. In the Market Economy,  it is always and no matter  how well the economists plan and implement the Economic policy. Somehow it will go back to “ 10%  people controlling 90%  of the market and the 90% of  people are sharing the 10% that is left”.

I find it similar in  Swiftlet farming. 10% Swiftlet farm capturing all the young Swiftlets which the rest (90%) are sharing what is left. Young Swiftlet is the future of a Swiftlet farm.

So where do you want to be? The 10% that is controlling or the 90% that share what is left?

Why do some businesses succeeded after changing hand? The new owner took over the failed business or company and changed the whole management later the businesses grow. Now is it because of the business or management?

I knew many people that buy failed Swiftlet houses at a bargain price and turned it around successfully.

I  believe the least you ask the more you will get.

So go and do a successful  Swiftlet farm.

Good Swiftlet farming All!

Swiftlet farming Love Potion Agent from Vietnam-Visiting Eco Park

(Tran

Swiftlet farming Love Potion Agent from Vietnam-Visiting Eco Park

The LP products and Love Potion Aroma agent for Vietnam, Mr. Tran Quoc Dung of DungYenSao paid me a visit last week. This was a return visit as I had promised him when I was in Vietnam last year while giving a talk on how to use Swiftlet Aroma & sound effectively

Love Potion is immensely famous and doing remarkably well in Vietnam. Many successful Swiftlet farms in Vietnam  are using Love Potion. He  told me that everybody in the Vietnam Swiftlet farming industry knows Love Potion. He said, with Love Potion to do few hundred nests in one year is easy. What a compliment….He showed me a live video  of a Swiftlet farm that uses Love Potion from his IPhone. We could observe hundred of Swiftlets glued to the planks thru the CCTV. This is amazing. I feel honored to see and hear his comment. I am truly happy that I had helped many Swiftlet farms.

They would be happy if I would visit Vietnam again to give a Talk. Readers in Vietnam hope that I could meet up with them again, said Mr .Tran. If everything goes well, tentatively, I would be in Vietnam again in August or September. Once my schedule is set, I would inform all readers.

( Very creative, Dutch concept...There is no Swiftlet in Europe)

While they were here, I took them to an  Eco park in Morid. This is  a small Eco park but an exceptionally beautiful one.  The Swiftlet farm and the Nests processing center are  the main attraction here. There is also a mini zoo with many exotic animals. This is a place Children would love to come.

I guess the whole idea was, while parents are looking at some exhibits of Edible Birds Nest, children could spend their time at the mini Zoo. It is a brilliant idea.

( The Main Entrance to the Eco Park)

 (  Mr.Tran & I)

( Nest processing Centre with Documentary Theater)

The  Nest processing center is open to public for free. You could watch how they clean the nests. It is highly professionally done. For those who had never seen how Nests are cleaned then this is the right place to visit.

( Nest processing centre. The staff  are cleaning nests. Note* Photography is not allowed in the nest processing centre...unless with permission)

( Having a drink at the Cafeteria with MR & Mrs: Tran of DunYenSao)

Next to the Nests processing center, there is  a cafeteria that serves many types of Birds Nests soup. You could sit back and enjoy the pleasant view of the Swiftlet farm while having a bowl of Birds Nest. If you want to pick up some souvenir  there is a small shop (cottage like) that sells them.

( Swiftlet Farm next to the Cafeteria)

Accidental Experiment of Meranti Nesting Planks.

Meranti

Meranti"

Accidental Experiment of Meranti Nesting Planks.

The result of a research and experiment helps us to make the right decision. Often people make decisions based on what they heard not what they had experienced. Over the years I had worked with many Meranti suppliers, to be honest through my experiences I know who is reliable and who is not. I can assure you if you have no knowledge about timber, wood, and the process of downstream, you cannot differentiate which type of woods is good for Nesting plank and which type is not suitable.

Bringing you to their Sawmills for a tour wouldn’t guarantee that you are on the right track of getting good Meranti wood. There are so many species of Meranti, some can be used as Nesting Plank while others deter Swiftlets from making nests. Some could resist termite and some could be  the favorite foods of termite. Surprisingly they both may look the same.

I have written about how to choose good Meranti wood as Nesting Plank in my previous articles, and I am not going to repeat, perhaps you could search the old post if you want to.

A  month ago I had brought back a box full with samples of Nesting planks of different type of Meranti woods. Inside the box,  there were some different sizes of corner boards and Nesting planks which had been cut into small pieces. It was given by many Meranti suppliers as samples.
It also includes those Merantis that I have been using and some from newer Meranti suppliers.

Last month there were some leakages in the toilet of my Showroom / warehouse where I put all these samples and other things. The whole floor was flooded, so I  brought the box home and put it in my garage temporarily. I had almost forgotten about it until a reader called me up. He wanted to buy some Meranti for his soon to be Swiftlet farm.

To my horror the whole carton box was infested with termites as you could see in the pictures. Before opening the box I swore ….. *^%$%#@...Oh no! Here gone all my samples.

I opened up the box, and as you could see clearly not all planks were eaten up by the Termite only some. In that box,  there are Dark red Meranti, Dark brown Meranti, Pink Meranti, Meranti Kepong, Yellow Meranti to name a few. This goes for the corner board as well.

Think about it, It is not that bad. The Termite had done a good job. They had actually helped me to do an experiment which I believe that had never been done before. It is a research showed different types of Meranti had different resistant to Termite attack. Now it’s  indicated which Meranti planks from which suppliers can withstand termite and which Meranti planks cannot.

I really thank the Termite for this. From here it had clearly indicated that  the Dark brown Meranti is superior to many other Merantis. This is the Dark Brown Meranti which I had written in my previous article before. I am happy that all my Swiftlet farms are using them as Nesting Plank.

The sad thing about it is…it is not easily available in the Market now. The Pink Meranti and those that had the white stripe on it are Termite favorite. The lighter color ones are prone to Termite attack. Also, the light wood is their favorite. The light Red Meranti wasn’t spared. Only the Dark Brown survived the Termite attack.

My advice is, don’t gamble away with Merantis that are prone to Termite attack. You have spent your life saving on this investment. If Termite infested the Planks that will be  the end of your Swiftlet farm.

(Termites looking for their favorite woods on the left)

( Soft Carton box is their favorite)

( Termites had already eaten deep into the light colored corner boards but the crescent one which is Dark Brown is untouched)

(This Dark brown  is not their favorite)

(Thousands of them inside this box of different types of Meranti)

( This is what it looks like inside)

( Comparison of different types of Meranti. On the Left are the most commonly used by Swiftlet farms. On the Right is the Dark brown. Don't mistaken it as Red.)

( Termites not interested in this Meranti)

( A Dark Brown Corner board untouched)

( The Red Meranti half eaten up)

( 90% of Swiftlet farm is using the above ones. Only 10% is using the below one. After cleaning up there are no traces of termite holes and damage on the Dark Brown Meranti below).

So be sure what you are using. Don't let people fool you  by saying " Ah Ya..all planks are the same lah". "This light pink is also good Meranti what".

Bear in mind you are the Swiftlet farm owner they are not. If your Swiftlet farms failed you lose they don't.

There are many out there selling 3-5th graded Meranti claiming them as Dark brown and Dark red Meranti. Anyway you couldn't tell the different........what is Meranti and what is not Meranti. Am I right? Now you know why I insisted on good wood as Nesting Plank. The pictures above with the help of those wonderful Termites tell tales.

Good Swiftlet farming All!

Successful Swiftlet Farm or Just a Bird House?

Successful Swiftlet Farm or Just a Bird House?

Looking from the outside this Swiftlet Farm looks good. There is no hint what is the real condition inside. But those who have experience and skill could foresee the real condition inside. The outside of the Swiftlet farm does indicates something.

Have you not noticed anything? ..... This Swiftlet farm has too many Vent-Holes, it will affect the internal micro. It will be difficult to control the temperature, humidity, etc. I am very sure the owner Mr. R didn't know about this. From the outside, I knew the internal micro is at threat. Let's see what I had anticipated is correct or otherwise.

This Birds House was built by a local. It is a 20 x 40 ', 3 storey Standalone located in a beautiful area in Kelantan. It is not that hard to build a successful Swiftlet farm in Kelantan if you know what you are doing. That is the biggest challenge for all. Kelantan is a good area for Swiftlet farming the success rate is high. But people still build failed Bird house here

Currently many people are building small Bird houses .. I don't know why. Whether it is a 20x70 or a 20x40 The commitment is the same. Obviously the cost of construction is different, but the longer Bird house has its advantages in the long run (not too big). I wonder is it a trend they just follow, or they actually wanted to build a successful Swiftlet farm? In Swiftlet farming people tend to follow others without knowing and understanding what is right and wrong.( Also what is necessary and what is not necessary).

Prior to this, the owner had reduced the size of the entrance hole. There are 2 things he might have thought of by doing this, 1) The Birds house is too bright 2) Swiftlet like small entrance hole. Is his assumption correct? We shall see

Now inside the Bird house. It tells tales....The dog Kennel roof is the problem. All things in a Swiftlet farm are interrelated. There are gaps at the roof. The light easily penetrates into the roving making the whole roving too bright. Subsequently the brightness of the roving affect the darkness of every floor of the nesting area. With its length of 40', the light could easily reach the back of the nesting area. Now you see why I prefer longer farm at least 60'. At 60' or more the glare reduced. No doubt some may argue in order to prevent this, partitions could be erected. Bear in mind this is a 40' Bird house. The roving has already taken 1/3 of its size. The partition will reduce the nesting area further. If the partitioning is not done properly without anticipating the flying path of Swiftlet it would kill the whole Bird farm

Due to this owner uses the orchard net to darken the walls...it won't help. He also reduces the entrance hole size so that it could reduce the brightness. With too many gaps, the movement of air in this Bird house is so intense that it caused the whole micro upside down.Currently the humidity of the Bird house is constantly low at all time.To solve this problem the owner increases the running time of the humidifiers. Without knowing the adverse effect, the owner actually has sabotaged its own Bird house. This caused a great RH fluctuation and instability. There are times the RH is too high, and there are times too low. How do we know this? Let's investigated

Look at the droppings and the nests. The dropping is like being washed and dried up. It shows when the  owner increases the running time of the humidifier the floor are wet, and it softens the dropping and breaking them down. When the humidifiers are switched off the dropping dried up fast. This not good for the Bird House.

There are few nests in this Bird house mostly built on the artificial nests. The elongated shape and the holes on it show poor micro control. There are many things in Birds House that indicate the condition of the micro, but it needs experience and skill to interpret them.

Why install internal tweeters at the middle of the Nesting Planks? Who teaches this? Young Swiftlets build their nests at corners. In all new Bird houses, most nests are built at the corners. Didn't we know this? I had written about Tweeter installation in Swiftlet farm in many of my previous articles...... But ...never mind.. Maybe they didn't read my blog.

Mr.R had installed few tweeters at the Conners and it shows results. But still not enough, not all corners  in the Bird house have tweeters. Don't underestimate the importance of Internally sound.( you will see the difference with GS internal sound) When the internal sound is played at the corner and the condition of the Swiftlet farm is good in a short period of time nest will be built there

Too few tweeters and some of the nesting planks have fungus. There are turning gray and black. When one pushes up the Rh in a high temperature Bird house the water droplets become hot mist. This is not what birds wanted. They want cool mist. I had seen many Bird houses turning into the sauna (spa).. ha..ha.

Again the fake nests are installed not close enough to the corner. The corner areas are the most important area in a Bird house. Most of the first nest in the new Swiftlet farm is built at the corner. Therefore, it is important to have tweeters installed at the corners not at the middle. The fake nests should be installed about 6-8" from the corners that have tweeter.

The Inter-hole is too small even though it is an 8x10' the stair has already taken 3-4' , what is left now is 4x10'. I don't really favor small inter-hole with stairs.

By just observing, I told Mr. R, " It seemed that this Bird house is built with a single layer brick wall".
He noted, yes it is he replied. I wonder how it would withstand the heat during the hot season like now. There is no insulating material at the wall. He has to do something otherwise this Bird house will remain as it is.

It is sad to see a bad Bird house in a good area. It is a learning curve and many pay hefty for not knowing what constitute a good and successful Swiftlet farm.

There is always a difference between building a successful Swiftlet farm and Building a Bird House. In this case, Mr.R has successfully built a Bird house but not a successful Swiftlet farm.

There are many things to do now, and I have to come out with a plan to salvage this Bird house and turn it into a Swiftlet farm.

Good Swiftlet farming!
