印尼的燕屋农场 Indonesia Swiftlet Farm - Rumah Walet Indonesia

我通過我的部落格認識了 Mr. A.G. 他是我部落格的常客。他住在印尼的加里曼丹。

他給我发了他在印尼加里曼丹的新燕屋农場的设计。 一個4層的15x26ft的建筑物并有狗洞設計。

正如我所觀察到的, 我估計, 這樣的大小和它的設計, 這個燕屋农場將很難吸引燕子留下來做燕窝。

以上是 Mr. A.G. 給我发的草圖計畫。互连洞是升降式的。如果你沒有經驗, 所有的事情看起來都很好。8x8ft 的互连洞看起來沒有錯。但是如果你考慮到整個燕屋农場的大小, 那麼互连洞就會出現問題。要記住, 燕屋农場的大小只有15x26尺。

我會提到一些技術在這裡與大家分享。扣除8ft 的互连洞後, 剩下的是18ft。18ft 區域暴露于光线、干燥空氣等等。如果將18ft 作为做窝區那么它需要分区。也許2个分區, 但18ft的大小限制了它。如果我們推得更遠, 將沒有更多的空間作为做窝区 (做窝区將是非常小的, 以適應繁殖/做窝區)。

互连的环绕区需要12尺 (最少) 让鳥類飞行 (指环绕区和互连洞)。想像一下還剩多少尺.  正如我們在照片中看到的, 燕屋农場是在平坦的土地上。燕屋主應該選擇一個3層的燕屋农場, 使燕屋农場變得更大 (更長), 因為建築的成本是相同的, 而不是更高。他不應該选择共同的設計。我不能責怪他.  通常大多數人會跟隨別人所做的, 而不了解什麼構成一個好的燕屋农場。

Mr. A.G. 抱怨說燕子沒有飛進他的燕屋农場。為了解決這個問題, 我草擬了一份改革計畫。說明為什麼燕子不飛進來的原因。 我想讓他明白, 如果他想讓他的燕場吸引金絲燕留下來築巢, 必須解決的根本因素。

這些類型的燕屋农場中有許多在東海岸, 即吉蘭丹州, Terenggganu 和彭亨州。其次, 在沙撈越和沙巴也可以找到許多。他們受到印尼燕屋农場和印尼書籍的影響。

I have know Mr. A.G through my blog. He is a regular reader of my blog. He lives in  Kalimantan, Indonesia. 

 He sent me a design of his new Swiftlet farm in Kalimantan, Indonesia.  A 4 storey building  of 15x26ft with a Dog Kennel design.

 As I observed, I reckoned, with  such size and its design this Swiftlet farm would have  a hard time  attracting Swiftlets to stay and build nests.

I do understand most Swiftlet farms in Indonesia favor  this type of design. A very narrow, small size and high/tall Swiftlet farm. It's has been a norms and identity for Indonesia Swiftlet farm. It was influenced by Swiftlet farms in the town where space was limited. One cannot go wide but could go high. Secondly, theft was rampant, therefore to build it high to prevent theft.

This type of Swiftlet farms were built many years ago when there were not many Swiftlet farms around. The old ones which beyond 20 years are harvesting tens of kg of nests per month. But things had changed now. The newly built ones don't share the same faith. Some hardly have few nests after few years. 

When there were just few Swiftlet farms around Swiftlet don't have a choice they have to stay. Therefore, even those badly built ones could attract many Swiftlets. But, it is no the same now as  Swiftlet farms are mushrooming everywhere and attracting Swiftlets to your farm needs special skills and knowledge.

As time goes by, the old Swiftlet farms once used to be the top  are now facing problem. Number of nests reduced. Their young Swiftlets are leaving them for Swiftlet farms that could provide better living condition in particularly those Swiftlets farms with good design of flying path, good light condition, good sounds,etc.

Above is the sketch plan that Mr. A.G sent me. The inter-hole is of the lift type. If you are inexperience all things look good. The 8x8ft inter-hole looks no mistake. But if you take into consideration of the size of the entire Swiftlet farm, then the inter-hole showed problem. Bear in mind the size of the Swiftlet farm is only 15x26ft. 

I will go a little technical here to share with you all. After deducting the 8ft for the inter-hole what left is 18ft. The 18ft area is exposed to light, drought air,etc. If the 18ft area is to be made into nesting area then it needs partitions. Perhaps 2 partitions but, the size of 18ft restricted it. If we pushed farther there will be no more space for nesting ( Nesting will be very small to accommodate breeding/nesting area).

Inter-hole roving needs 12 ft ( minimum) for birds to maneuver ( means roving and the inter-hole). Imagine how many feet left. As we could see in the picture the Swiftlet farm is around a flat land. Instead of going for high/tall the owner should have opted for a 3 storey farm and make the farm bigger ( longer) as the cost of construction would be the same. He shouldn't have followed the common design. I can't blame him. Often most would follow what others do without understanding what constitute a good Swiftlet farm. 

Mr.A.G complained that birds are not flying into his farm. To solve this problem I drafted out a revamp plan. Indicating the reason why Swiftlet is not flying in.  I want him to understand the underlying factors that have to be solved if he wants his Swiftlet farm to attract Swiftlets to stay and build nests.

( To be fair to Mr.A.G, I had covered ( red square) some of the things need to be done and (measurement)needed to be altered in the farm) 

Young Swiftlets that are mating and looking for a place to build nests would never choose his farm. As they know once they flew in, especially to the lowest floor their off springs will never have a chance to fly out ( dead) . It is too narrow and high. Their natural instincts tell them this is not a safe place to build nests. Therefore it is common to see dead birds at the lowest floor of the roving area  of all Swiftlet farms that shared this design.

Because of its size ( 15x26ft) light could easily penetrate into the nesting area making it too bright. To prevent this partitions have to be erected. But, installing partitions would restrict the flying path of the birds given the limited space of the farm. No partitions it will be too bright......so what should we do?

The partitions have to be installed at the right place without obstructing their flying path. In order to do this you must understand how Swiftlet maneuver and fly. There is no guessing game here. Any mistake it would ruin your Swiftlet farm. 

 Above is the sketch plan showed  how the flying paths changed once the revamp is done. It also showed where the Swiftlets will build their nests. As most of you had already known "Jalur" means flying path. All things in a Swiftlet farm are interrelated. Once, certain things changed it would affect others. It is a matter of instantly...simultaneously or later.

With my vast experience, I could anticipated where the nests will be built after the revamp. This is not magic, it is through the years of seeing and visiting countless Swiftlet farms. Those who have knowledge in Swiftlet farming would agree with me.

 Due to privacy matter I could only reveal level 3 and level 4 revamp plan. I hope by looking at the plan you all  would understand the pros and cons of a small Swiftlet farm.

Many of  these types of  Swiftlet farms could be found in the East coast , namely Kelantan, Trenggganu and Pahang. Secondly, many also can be found in Sarawak and Sabah. They were influenced by Indonesia Swiftlet farm and books from Indonesia.

I believe whatever design your Swiftlet farm is, most important it must have the basic that could accommodate what Swiftlet wants. 

Not how you wanted it. Not what your friends wanted it. Absolutely not what other people is doing it and you just follow.

A bottle of  Love Potion was placed next to the Entrance hole to attract young birds to fly in. If you experienced Swiftlets turning away ( turning back when reaching the entrance hole) from the Entrance hole then you should try this. Mr. A.G found this very effective.

如果你可以建立一個達到上述的燕屋农场, 為什麼你仍然需要一個冷气机？可悲的是, 沒有多少燕屋农场可以达到這樣的条件, 於是許多人求助於使用小玩意。

空調能降低燕屋农场的溫度。但要記住冷气机的空氣是乾燥的。這與維持 RH 80-90% 的目標完全相悖。當空氣乾燥時, 做燕窝的過程會發生什麼？通常, 當燕屋农场是乾燥的, 燕窝是骯髒的, 崩裂, 形狀不好, 小的燕窝等等。 燕子將有一個很艰难的做窝过程。

有了這種不舒服的環境, 燕子會找新的地方做燕窝。這是不實際的, 隨著燕子在燕屋农场里不停的飞动 , 灰塵, 羽毛, 燕子屎, 真菌等等都將積累在冷气机的篩檢程式。這將創造一個非常不健康的環境。它的坏处會比好处更多。其于， 开用冷气机的用電成本如何？

這只是少數的問題。還有更多的相關問題。說了這些之後, 有些人還是選擇了冷气机。

AIR-CONDITIONER FOR SWIFTLET FARMS?

( Swiftlet farm relies on Air-cond to bring down the temperature. A no way out situation)

I had been asked uncountable times about this.  It surprised me, as today people still ask the same question again. After so many years haven't they learned something? I guess they did not.

"Hi  James,  my Swiftlet farm is hot. The day time temperature is above 32C. Could I use Air-cond to bring down the temperature?"

Who wants to build a hot...... high temperature farm? Isn't the main objective is to create an internal environment that is cool  and stable with the temperature of 25-29C and humidity of RH 80-90%?

If you could built a Swiftlet farm achieving the above, why would you still need an Air-cond to do the job? Sadly, not many Swiftlet farms met such condition thus many resorting to using gadgets.

Air-cond could bring down the farm's temperature. But bear in mind the air from the Air-cond is dry. Its totally contradict with the objective of maintaining the RH of 80-90%. When the air is dry what happens to the process of nest building? Often when the farm is dry, the nests are dirty, cracked, out of shaped, small in sizes, etc.  Swiftlets will have a hard-time building nests.

With such uncomfortable environment Swiftlet would look for new places to build nests. It is not practical, with the constant movement of Swiftlets in the swiftlet farm, dust, feathers, dropping, fungi, etc all would accumulate in the filter of the Air-cond. It would create a very unhealthy environment. It would have more cons than pros. In additional ..what about the electricity cost of running Air-cond?

These are just few of the problems. There are more related problems. After having said all these some people still opted for Air- cond.
