This is an interesting email from the owner of a Bh that I had built in Kelantan. I think it is good to share with all readers because yesterday someone called me and ask whether he should put humidifiers in his new Bh.
He frequently updates me with the findings of his new Bh. This is what I like where he could learn from me the very basic of BH maintenance works to very technical aspect of Bh management. My way of building Bh for my readers is different, it is a two way communication where I want my reader to get involved in the process Bh building. This is to make sure when the Bh is handover to them, they could handle it themselves without relying on others.
They will see how the Bh is being built from sketch to installation of planks and tweeters. With this practice, practical and theory are easy absorbed throughout the whole period of construction.
Here is the email and data information on the micro of the Bh from my reader. It is interesting, even without the humidifiers the Bh could maintain its RH. The Data was recorded in May 2012 during the hot season. Not now where the humidity is often high due the year end raining season.
This clearly indicated the material use, the design of the Bh ,determining the number of Vent-holes, the size of the inter-hole and the entrance –hole, the partitioning, height of the floor, etc are utmost important and cannot be taken lightly.
Good evening James,
Thanks for the trip to Kelantan yesterday. I hope your return flight was smooth and timely.
I installed a data logger for 24 hour in both the 3rd floor and 2nd floor rooms. As expected, the 3rd floor room is higher because of the the naked concrete at the end of the room whereas the highest recorded is 29.9 deg C.
The range of temperature for both floor is good in my opinion; 2nd floor 28.5 to 29.9 deg, range =1.4 deg within 24 hours..
I am quite surprised with the humidity level; 2nd floor 73 to 85%, 3rd floor 71 to 81%. I think the bigger range is because of the data logger humidity reading accuracy i.e. +-5% hence a bigger gap. I need to verify this reading with a hygrometer. Do I still need humidifier with this range of humidity?
Attached please find the record from the data logger also the ceiling layout plan for both 3rd floor and 2nd floor for your review. Looking forward to receive the plank and tweeter layout design from you.
Thanks & best regards,
Mr. R

“Do all Bh need humidifiers?” The answer is “NO”. Humidifier is used only when the humidity at an area of a Bh is low. You can us a Hygrometer to check the RH. Acceptable RH in Bh is from 75-95%. Any reading outside this range is considered unfavorable.
Optimal level Rh improves quality of nests at the same time helps increase birds’ population. You can easily identify the signs of poor RH control in Bh. Small elongated nests, Dirty with many feathers, crack, holes and gaps, brittle, etc.
Unfavorable RH could harm the Bh and the birds inside. Therefore make sure your Bh is checked often and the Rh is at favorable level.
