Not what You Want!

I have not been writing that often as I was tight-up with many things related to farming especially nests processing and export.

Some of you might be wondering what happens to James…MIA liow?

Don’t worry I will always be here. There is a saying “once a swiftlet farmer always is a swiftlet farmer.”

How could I stay away from Swiftlet farming, it is so addictive I don’t think that I could kick away this habit. It is so addictive that I can’t stop thinking about it every other hour.

Someone called me just a couple of minute ago. He wanted to know how much it cost to build a farm. He said he doesn’t see much of cost involved like what I had mentioned on my blog.

He said all it needs probably some ceiling board to close the window and ply woods to cut it into nesting planks.

I told him well very good go ahead you may have a successful farm in no time. Often I won’t iron out or reason out with people like this .It is a waste of time. Often I would ask them since you had decided then go ahead.

How could the farm not fail when one has so little knowledge about swiftlets farming?

Anyway this is what happened to the swiftlet farming industry. Another one was this reader asking about things regarding temperature of farms.

He keeps on asking is there anything that he could buy or to put in his farm so that the temperature will reduce.

Later thru the conversation he reveals that his farm is a 20x80, 2 storey standalone with zinc wall without any insulation. He claimed that during the hot day temperature rises to 42C. I asked him didn’t you know it will never worked in the first place? His reply was “James at that time I didn’t know Swiftlet can’t live in such hot condition”.

Over the years I received countless of emails and calls from readers and some I would laugh till I drop dead after reading them.

All sort of crazy ideas that don’t make sense. And most of the time it is the farmers themselves decided what the best for the birds based on their experiences and knowledge. If their knowledge is somewhat poor then the farms they build would be poor too.

One reader showed me his farm’s design and he is very proud of it. He asks me for my opinion. I asked him why are the walls here, why are you using such material and so on…..?

He replied the birds would like it and would fly there and so on….and tells me how the birds would fly and stay and later making nests. I asked him is this your assumption or that is what the bird had told you? (Of course it is his assumption).

He was muted for a while..I think he hated me for criticizing his works. How could I not criticizing a design that doesn’t work. Most instances Farmers themselves are building farm to what they think and to what they like .How many actually building farms to suit the birds?

Building a farm the way you wanted would definitely boost up your sense of achievement but in reality you would end up suffering when you see no nests in few years time.

Don’t forget the main objective here is to build farms for swiftlets .

Harvesting ( Helps to Increase Birds Population and Nests)

One of the mistakes commonly made by many farmers is delaying harvesting. This is due to unable to set a schedule for harvesting. Nobody knows your farm better than yourself. You know your farm best. The number of nests, number of birds, number of nest marking, the weather around your area, and so on.

All these would help you in planning out your harvest. A good planned harvest helps to increase birds’ population and nests.

There are many farmers reluctant to harvest nests especially in new farms that have 20-50 nests. Reasons cited are ‘lets the nests grow more, too early to harvest, too few to harvest and so on with 100& 1 reason. In fact by delaying the harvest they are preventing the number of nests to increase.

I had visited many failed farms and often seen nests in these farms are not harvested some have been there for months or years. I asked the owned why didn’t you harvest them? The reply was ‘If I harvested them then I can’t see them anymore”.

It is so precious to them. They’re afraid if they harvested all nests they will lose them forever. This is nature, swiftlet have no use of their nests after their chicks fly away. Often they will recycle or use back their old nests if it’s not removed from here you would lose every each nest that is recycled by the bird.

In fact if they had harvested them the number of nests would have been increased by double. Harvesting boost up the nests grows but it has to be done properly in a well planned and systematic manner.

For farms that have many nests a poor planned harvest will not only affect the number of nest (future) but also the birds’ population, nests quality and so on.

Let’s not be afraid to harvest the nests in farms, be it 5 or 10 nests because harvesting is part of a technique of pushing up the number of nests in farms.

Some of the tips here are:

- Never harvest the nests on a rainy or cloudy day. As many Swiftlet may be in the farm. Raining day swiftlets wouldn’t travel far for food often they will come back to the farm. It is uncommon to see many of them in the farm.

- Harvesting should start in the morning and should finish by 2.00 pm.

- Start with one section complete that part then only move to another.

- Do not spend too much time in the farm if it is not necessary. Your objective is to do harvest not TehTarik.

- Do a record and mark them down how many nests for every each harvest (date and time)

- After every each harvest spray Love Potion to eliminate human odor and create an environment that would make the birds feel comfortable.

After you have done the above and on the coming next harvest compare the number of nests you have harvested, the number of new nests, the quality of nests and so on with the previous record then you would understand what I mean.

Nests in Swiftlets farm Tell Tales

Did you know that the nests quality in our farms tell tales? The shape, sizes, coloration, etc all tell us about the condition of our farms and where the future of our farms are heading.

I bet many of you have not realized this. If you are experienced enough by looking at the nests you would know whether the Swiftlets in the farm are happily living there.

Some might even wonder why a farm that is harvesting many kgs of nest every month but over the time the numbers of kgs is reducing. (They are not happy)

Why nests are dirty with feathers and dropping, some even turn brownish and so on. Many have resorted to increase the humidity in farms to counter this problem. In fact they knew it has got to do with the micro condition, but knowing this is not good enough. You must know spot on which and what is the exact problem. Well this might takes years of swiftlet farming experience and having sharp observation.

Indeed yes, humidity plays a role in nest quality but to certain extend. Increasing humidity would reduce the dryness of the nests thus reducing cracks and holes gap. Having good acceptable humidity would make the nests more of a shinny looks but it doesn’t 100% eliminated the dirty weird shape of a nest.

Too high of humidity will cause the shape of nest elongated, coloration and so on. In fact it is not a good thing to have high humidity the quality of the nests will be effected. While for the birds it takes a longer time to complete the nests as it is harder for the saliva to dry. The birds may give up making the nests and look for another farm that suit them.

Dirty nests, weird shaped nests, small sizes of nests and so on show the birds are not completely satisfy with the condition of the farm. Though the temperature and the Rh may be at the acceptable level but swiftlets are looking beyond this.

Thru my experiences of having seen so many farms besides the above Swiftlets want a place that is safe and easy to access. They must feel safe in the farm In order for them to produce good quality nests. If there felt the farm they have been living somewhat not safe and not comfortable anymore then birds will have stress thus this will affect the nests making process.

Over the time every changes, that included your farm’s condition. A farm’s condition couldn’t remain the same over its life span. What might be perfect 1-2 years ago may be imperfect now. Bear in mind population of Swiftlets grow, this will generate heat, the accumulation of the dropping also affect the micro condition and (bad and good) and so on.

By understanding the above we need to constantly observe the changes and rectify what is needed to maintain a good continuous condition. If your farm has reached certain kgs of nests and you are happy about it and you leave it as it is. In no time you would see your harvest reducing when there are more new farms building next to yours.

But you can’t blame yourself can you? If you didn’t know how to look for sigh of deteriorations in your nests then how could solve or rectifying them?

The Common Question!

Should I apply Aroma, Install Humidifiers and Hexagonal tweeter and so on in my new farm? This is the question asked by my reader who had a farm started about 6 months ago.

What do you all think?

I asked my reader you mean your farm doesn’t have all these necessary stuff?

Yes James, my consultant said for now it is not necessary. He said let all the swiftlets come in and stay and make nests first then in a year or two later he will install it for me.

I am very sure in a year or two the consultant will be nowhere to be found. This is one of the common things that happen to those who have chosen the wrong person to undertake to build a swiftlet farm for them.

This scenario not only happened to newbie but also to many who are quite well verse in swiftlet farming.

I asked him again, any sign of Swiftlets droppings in patches which increase in size or in numbers? He replied just 2 or 3 patches in the 2^nd month but all dried up already.

“James my consultant said no need to put any Aroma because when the numbers of Swiftlets increases then the dropping will produce smell”

“James my consultant also said no need to put good or effective sound. No need hexagonal tweeter either because when many swiftlets had stayed they will make lots of loud sound”.

All I can say is either those consultants are out dated, under skill or he is finding ways to cut cost so that he could make more profit. Secondly this reader of mine had been taken for a ride.

Well this is not the first time I have come across such question in fact it is quite common to hear this. Furthermore when I visit failed farms and revamp them these are the same questions asked by the failed farm’s owner. So could you see the similarity the failed farms have compared with the new farms that do not us Aroma, Humidifier, Hex sound and so on.

We are talking about the first step of how we could create a good environment so that Swiftlets would come and play and stay. If you can’t create a good environment then how could the swiftlets going to stay.

Apply Aroma and so on all these are to create a good environment liked by Swiftlets. Good environment is a key to successful farm. How come most of us knew about this and yet we still try to go against it? Sometimes I ‘m really speechless. Is it going against the norm is fun?

I told my reader, I cannot interfere with what your consultant had planned or done. You had accepted his offer and he has completed the job for you. I cannot comment further on this because it is not fair to you as well to your consultant. Furthermore I am not your consultant perhaps in a year or two you may call me to revamp your farm if you see there is the need.

God bless you….. This is what I told him.

Those consultants whether they are skillful, unskilled or totally no skills they are all human who just want to “cari makan”.

Actually the farm’s owner s is partly to be blamed (80%). They are the one who choose the consultants. They should take full responsibility.

Birds Test & Survey. (Unexpected)

I was invited by my reader to do a feasibility survey and evaluation at an area he intended to build a swiftlets farm.

It was located not far from Klang Valley. Since it is not far from the bustling city therefore I expected there would be lots of development and the birds’ population would be small. To my surprise it proved me wrong.

Before this we have spoken before and I had advised him, “It is better to do a survey rather than just go into it if you are not familiar with the surroundings area you would ended up losing what you have invested”.

I told him if the survey turned out to be unfavorable I shall advise him not to build it and he is prepared to take my advice. Of course there are many who are in this trade would encourage newbies to go ahead even though they knew the area is no good for Swiftlet farm. This is because they want to make profit from the construction of the farm whether the farm they built would have nests or otherwise in future is none of their concern.

This area where I conducted the test was surrounded with plenty of green especially Palm Oil plantation with small hills and streams. There are plenty of swiftlet activities that are visible. There’re many Switlets flying above the canopy of green hunting for food.

This area has few existing farms. Before I did the Sound Test I asked him do you know how long have all these farms operated? He replied “I have no Idea maybe they are new”.

I told him never mind I could find out myself. He replied “How could you tell? Well I told him “look at those bricks at the window”.

Thru my experience by judging from the fungus mark on those bricks the farm could have been there for 2-3 years.

Then he asked me again how do we know these are successful farms or otherwise. I told him well, look at the massive bard wire surrounding the roof of those farms. The owner won’t spend few thousand rigggit for no reason therefore there must be theft here.

If there are thieves here that means there must be nests (thief won’t be so stupid to enter farms that has no nests or just have few nests). In fact by judging at the massive bard wire I am very sure there are plenty of nests in those farms.

In fact it was a low profile area many wouldn’t have noticed such potential. I asked my reader, didn’t you do a bird count on those farms at evening when the birds return? He replied yes,. Then I said very well you have done your homework. How many birds would that be? He replied” I counted until five hundred then too many and I lost count. That was a good reply.

I told him averagely 8 birds to 1 nest that is the ratio. Never mind I told myself. After looking around the area and surveying some of the existing farms I took out my BTK and switched on the Stress sound within second there were 20 birds circling on top of own cars.

As we were chit –chating the number of birds were getting bigger. Within 15 minute there are few hundred birds and many more are coming.

I asked my readers are you happy to see so many birds responded? He gave me a funny reply.

James” these birds belong to the surrounding areas here and from those farms. I want those birds that belong to nobody and from the wild.”

I almost vomited blood can’t blame him he is truly a newbie.

Can anyone tells me which birds ( A.fuciphugus) from Selangor doesn’t belong to farm?

Where the hell there are such thing call wild birds? There is no cave here. All birds are somehow from farms. It is a matter of who is getting whose birds especially the young birds.

If you have constructed a good farm then you would attract all others farms’ birds. For sure there are no wild Swiftlets but there are wild birds that live on trees ..

For few hundred birds within 15 minute of test it shows this place is definitely good for farming.

It surpassed my minimum required number of birds which is at least 50 and above and the birds have to response to the sound within 15 minute anything least its considered bad.

This test passed with flying color.

I advise my reader to go ahead with the construction. This place is good and not many people know about it. I guess he is lucky to have found this place.
