看看那些螞蟻是多麼的渺小。

螞蟻也吃燕窩。

它們是很難被看得到的。它們可以在燕屋農場裏把燕子的人口減少而不被發現。它們殺害幼小的燕子。才幾天大又沒有羽毛的幼燕子是它們的最愛。它們柔軟的皮還不能保護它們。它們忍受不到被咬的痛苦。經常這些被攻擊的幼燕子會從自己的燕窩跳出來然後死在地上。如果您發現有死燕子在地板上，有螞蟻在你的燕屋農場裏的可能性很高。

經常沒有錯過你檢查了，你尋找螞蟻在燕屋農場的蹤跡。你還是找不到它們，不管是在地板或牆壁上。沒有螞蟻的痕跡。你非常確信你的燕屋農場是沒有這些小昆蟲因為你到處放了螞蟻毒餌。但是有時候你仍然看見有幾天大的幼燕子在地板上。

是的，螞蟻是在你的燕屋農場，但是您找不到它們。它們會躲在木板的後面. 它們躲在天花內。它們躲在牆上的決口和裂縫，只是晚上才爬出來。這些不是黑螞蟻。這些是微小，紅色，不是那些從我們花園的紅螞蟻，不是更大的那些。

這些小小紅色的螞蟻經常在晚上期間才爬出活動和攻擊幼燕子的，而且它可以輕易逃避我們的搜索。

我在我的燕屋農場發現它們和我也使用了螞蟻餌來毒害它們（那些餅乾型的毒藥由中國製造）。起初它毒死了很多螞蟻，但是卻無法消滅整個螞蟻群，但是在幾個月後它們又回來了。這次它們再不吃相同的毒餌。他們寧願吃含有流體的幼燕子，柔軟和嫩的肉。螞蟻毒餌不含流體它們是乾型的。我已經嘗試通過添加一些糖水。最初的幾次效果還蠻好的，之後它們又不感興趣了。也許它們通過本能學會了，或者它們更喜歡新鮮多汁的肉而不是乾巴巴的螞蟻餌。

我發現螞蟻又從天花板來了。我燕屋農場的天花板是水泥板與保麗龍做防熱的。它是一個3層高的中間店鋪。我的鄰居把頂層租給一些外勞。他們在那裏做飯和吃飯，螞蟻應該就是從那裡來的，但是現它們卻已經適應了吃肉嫩多汁的幼燕子。我已經把毒藥放在天花板上，但是未能殺死它們全部的螞蟻。

確實令人擔憂...我需要解決這個問題，要不然燕子的人口增長將受到嚴重的影響。

我打電話給一個好朋友，曾經從事在養雞行業多年在實吊遠。他也是在養燕。他有幾個成功的燕屋農場在實吊遠。他曾經面臨同樣的問題，但是已經解決了它。他有這個特殊的液體，對燕子是安全的但卻可以有效的殺死螞蟻整個殖民而不會影響燕子。我猜他肯定是從他在養雞的豐富經驗借用這個想法。

我從他那裡買了一瓶這種液體，噴灑一些在木板下的牆壁和天花板內。令我驚奇的是在一周後我再也沒有看到任何死幼燕子在地板上。這次真的救了那些幼燕子。這種獨特的液體是完全無味的因為大多數的螞蟻毒有強烈的氣味。

我問他，"你是那裏得到這種特殊的液體，可以殺死那些小小的紅螞蟻?"他半開玩笑地回答，"我自己發明的"。他告訴我這種液體還可以有效地殺死蟑螂、蜘蛛和跳慅。

They are hard to be seen. They reduce Bird population in Swiftlet farm without being noticed. They kill young birds. Few days old chicks without feathers are their favorite pray. Their soft skins cannot protect them. They cannot bear the pain of being bitten. Attacked chicks often jump out from their nests and die.  If you find  Swiftlet chicks on the floor there is high possibility ants are living in your Swiftlet farm.

Without failed routinely you have inspected your Swiftlets farm looking for the sign of ants .You cannot find them on the floor or walls.There are no traces of ants. You are very sure that your Swiftlet farm is free from these small creatures because you had put Ant poison bait everywhere. But occasionally you still see few days old chicks on the floor.

Yes Ants are in your farm but you are unable to find them. They hide behind the Nesting Planks.They are inside the ceiling. They are in the gaps and the cracks on the wall crawling out only at night.These are not Black Ants. They are small and tiny, red color, not those red ants from our garden which are bigger in sizes.

These small tiny red ants often active during night crawling out from their nests and attack chicks  it could easily evade our search.

I found them in my Swiftlet farm and I have used Ant bait to poison them ( the biscuit type poison from China). Initially it killed many ants but unable to wipe out the whole colony after a couple of months they came back. This time they don’t take the same poison bait again. They prefer to feast on the soft and tender  flesh of the young chicks which contain fluid. Ant poison baits don’t contain fluid they are packed dry. I have tried adding some sugar water. It worked well the first few times, later they are not interested anymore. Perhaps they have learned through instinct or they  prefer fresh juicy flesh to dry Ant baits.

I discovered the ants came from the ceiling. The ceiling of my farm is of cement boards insulated with Styrofoam. It is a 3 storey intermediate Shoplot unit. My neighbor had rented out the top floor to some foreign workers. They cook and eat there, the ants must have been originated from there and now they have adapted to eating  juicy flesh of young Swiftlet chicks. I had  put Ant poison baits in the ceiling but failed to kill them all.

I was worrying… I need to solve this problem or else the population growth would be seriously affected.

I called a good friend of mine, who had worked in the Agriculture industry for many years which specializes in Chicken farming in Setiawan. He is also into Swiftlet farming. He owed few  successful Swiftlet farms in Setiawan. He had faced the same problem before but managed to solve it. He has this special liquid which is safe for birds but kill the colonies of Ants effectively without affecting Swiftlets. I guess he must have borrowed this idea from his vast experience in Chicken farming.

I got a bottle of this liquid from him and sprayed inside the ceiling and some at the walls of the nesting areas. To my surprise after a week I don’t see any dead young chicks on the floor. This really saved the young chicks. This unique liquid is totally odorless as most Ant poisons have strong smell.

I asked him, “where did you  get this special  liquid which can kill those small tiny red ants?” He jokingly replied, “ I formulated it myself”. He told me this liquid also kills cockroaches, Spiders and Kutu effectively.

很容易工作。可以被修割成任何的大小來適合那些決口。

用保麗龍來做防熱材料的燕屋農場。

用其他材料來做防熱的燕屋農場。

"大多數的燕屋農場失敗是因爲由內部的溫度很高"是真的嗎? 很明顯是的！我太過常見過這樣的狀況。我參觀過許多失敗的燕屋農場，而且其中一半以上的都是面臨這樣的問題。

這是因為對防熱的理解方法不夠好。許多人不知道良好的防熱就是建立一個良好、穩定的內部環境的關鍵。沒有穩定的環境，燕子不會留下來和作燕窩。

一個擁有良好穩定的內部，它的溫度是26-30度C。在某些情況下31度C仍然是可以接受的，任何有比這更高的溫度都是不好的，而且它將謀殺燕屋農場。

一次又一次的，燕屋農場被建造時沒有考慮到熱對燕屋農場的內部環境的影響。無論這是因為節省成本或對燕屋農場建設中的知識缺乏。天花板沒有防熱，牆壁沒有做雙層塼，水泥天花板沒有屋頂，等等...，還有很多新的燕屋農場接下來都是用這種方式來建立的。不知道爲什麽還有人仍然要這種類型的建設理念。

熱氣來自屋頂和牆壁。它幾個小時内就可以滲透。如果屋頂是用吊頂板不到一個小時，在作窩區的溫度一定會上升。

其中一個最經濟和最有效的防熱方法是我採用的就是在吊頂板上面安裝保麗龍。一個2"2X4'的保麗龍將做的很好。被切割和安裝在抓住吊頂板的木結構中。抓住天花板上的木板是2"x2"的，所以被修割過的2"的保麗龍是非常適合在天花板而不移動。

我試用過其他防熱材料，但是沒有一個可以比保麗龍更有效在防熱這一方面，而且最好的是它最經濟和方便工作。它們可以被修割成任何尺寸。

保麗龍是用於熱水壺。我相信你有買過熱咖啡在那些用了一次就扔的杯子。捧著杯子的時候你的手不會感到熱，但是當您啜飲的時候，它還會燒傷您的嘴唇。

當你談到成本加效率在防熱材料的時候，保麗龍就是解決方案。燕屋農場的解決方案不應是複雜的。如果它是複雜的那它就不是一個解決的辦法。

“Most Swiftlets Farms fail because of its high Internal temperature” Is it true? Obviously yes! I have seen this too often. I have visited many sick Swiftlets Farms and more than half of them are facing such problem.

This is due to poor understanding of heat preventing method. Many didn’t know that good insulation is the key to creating a good stable Internal Environment. Without a stable environment,  Swiftlet won’t stay and build nests.

A good stable Internal Farm temperature is 26-30C. In some situations 31C is still acceptable, anything above is bad, and it would kill the farm.

Again and again Swiftlet farms are built without taking into consideration about how heat affects the farm Internal Environment. Either this is because of cost saving or poor knowledge in Swiftlet farm construction.  Ceilings are not insulated, walls are not double layered, concrete ceiling without roof, etc.…. and there’re many new Swiftlet farms coming up now building  this way. Somehow people still buy this type of construction concept.

Heat comes from the roof and walls. It penetrates within hours. If the roof is of ceiling board less than an hour the temperature in the Nesting area will rise.

One of the most economical and most efficient insulation methods that I have adopted is installing Styrofoam above the ceiling board. A 2” 2x4’ Styrofoam board will do the  job. They are cut and fit into the wood structure that hold the ceiling board. The wood that holds the ceiling is 2"x2” so the trimmed 2” Styrofoam just fit nicely above the ceiling without moving.

I have tried other insulation materials, but none could come close to this Styrofoam in term of efficiency in  insulation and best of all economical and easy to work with. They can be trimmed into any sizes.

Styrofoam is used in hot water flask. I am sure you have bought hot coffee in a disposable cup. Your hand won’t feel hot by holding the cup, but when you sip, it will burn lip.

When you talk about cost plus efficiency in insulation, Styrofoam is the solution. Swiftlet farming solution should not be complicated. If it is complicated then it is not a solution.

師傅那些燕子瘋狂了。。。。SIFU THE BIRDS GO CRAZY..LIOW

"James師傅，安裝了點滴頭在環繞區之後，燕子是瘋狂一般的潛入我的燕屋農場。點滴頭使燕子瘋狂了一樣......我從未見過有這麼多的燕子在我的燕屋農場。謝謝你師傅"。

Jerantut的W先生打電話給我，他勢不可擋的興奮當他看到上百的燕子沖進他的燕屋農場。經過2年的操作之後，這是他第一次親眼目睹到上百只燕子飛入他的燕屋農場，而且還是不願意飛出。似乎人類的存在並沒有嚇到它們，W先生說。

W先生想要知道為什麼這種現象從未發生過，但是在安裝了點滴頭之後，燕子都變得瘋狂了。

我只能說的也就是......燕子愛從噴霧器噴出來的Love Potion芳香氣味。香氣...你知道的。。我不需要進一步的詳細説明......我相信你知道這個香氣的名稱。

讓我示範如何安裝點滴頭在環繞區，把Love Potion滴到噴霧區。一旦噴霧器開動了，Love Potion的香氣將把整個環繞區包圍，這樣就可以把正在外面玩的燕子吸引到燕屋農場裏了。

下面是從我燕屋農場之一的照片。照片顯示有增加了白色的小燕子的屎。

你需要的東西： 威力點滴頭，一瓶Love Potion，16毫米的水管、 塑膠吊帶(凡購買每個威力點滴頭都有附送的)

用打火機把水管燒軟，以便水管可以輕鬆地連接上點滴頭。

吊在離地面3-4尺的地方。

這就是用了第三瓶的Love Potion。看看那些白色的燕子屎在環繞區的牆壁上。

加上一個水管鎖以防止水管離開噴霧器的水盤。

水管鎖應將放在水盤內。

放磚塊在水管的下面以便香氣會滴朝水盤中。

就是這樣。

這張照片是在作窩區拍的。看看那些白色的燕子屎蓋在上面。使用了點滴頭之後，燕子的數量增加了。如果你燕屋農場的數量停滯了那麽您則應使用這個點滴頭。這個點滴頭是可以為新和舊的燕屋農場使用。

這個燕屋農場可以保留其幼小的燕子同時也可以吸引來自其他燕屋農場的年輕燕子。這就是吸引許多年輕燕子的證據。

SIFU THE BIRDS GO CRAZY..LIOW

“Sifu James, after installing the Dripper at the Roving, Birds go crazy diving into my farm. The Dripper makes the Birds go crazy liow…. I had never seen so many Birds in my farm before. Thank you Sifu”.

Mr.W of Jerantut called me and overwhelmingly excited he saw hundred of Birds storming into his Swiftlet farm. After 2 years of operation,  this is the first time he witnessed hundred of Birds flying into his farm and reluctant to fly out. It seems  human presence didn’t scare them at all, quoted Mr.W.

Mr. W wanted to know why all this while such phenomena had never happened before and now after installed the Dripper Birds go crazy.

Well all I could say is… Birds Love the Aroma smell that churns out from the Humidifier.  The Aroma .. You know.. I don’t have to elaborate further… I am sure you know the name of the Aroma.

One thing for such Mr. W is one happy guy after seeing so many Birds in his farm. I must give credit to Mr. Ding one of the most successful and respected Swiftlet farmers of Setiawan who came out with this idea of Dripping Love Potion into Humidifier. I once told him that he should have patented this technique.

Let me show you how to install the Dripper at the Roving  to drip Love Potion into the Humidifier. Once the Humidifier is switched on the Aroma of Love potion will fill the whole Roving Area and attract Birds that are playing outside to fly into the farm.

Below are the pictures from one of my Swiftlet farms. The pictures show an increase of white droppings of young birds.

 Things you need :  a Power Dripper, a bottle of Love Potion, 16mm hose, plastic hanger ( come with every purchase of  Power Dripper)

 Burn the Hose with a Cigarette Lighter to soften it so that it could easily fit onto the Dripper head.

Hang 3-4ft from the ground.

This is the 3rd bottle of Love Potion used. Look at the White Dropping on the walls of the Roving.

 Hose clip to secure the hose to prevent Hose from falling out from the Humidifier water tray.

 The Clip should be placed inside the water tray.

 Put a Brick under the Hose so that the Aroma will drip towards the tray.

 This is how it looks like.

 This picture is taken in the Nesting Area. Look at the White droppings covering the shit. After using the Dripper the bird population has increased. If your Swiftlet farm population stagnated you should use this Dripper. The Dripper is good for New and Old Swiftlet farm.

This Swiftlet farm is attracting young birds from other farms at the same time retaining its young birds. Evidence of attracting many young birds.

高溫度和高濕度在燕屋農場 HIGH TEMPERATURE And HIGH HUMIDITY in SWIFTLET FARM

外面的溫度上升到40度C。前一年在這個期間並不是這樣。幾乎每隔一周都有下雨。在過去的幾個月，下午的氣溫一直極端達到40度C。自從2006年以來是最熱的一個季節。

就算被建的好的燕屋農場，有良好的防熱材料也一樣遭受熱氣溫的問題，何況那些只是用單層磚建造的燕屋農場，很差的通風系統控制，沒有被管理好的排氣風扇，差控制的RH (濕度)等......

那些把噴霧器一天開3次每一次30分鐘的燕屋農場還是不能得到應該的濕度，那就是高過80%(RH)。

許多燕屋農場有使用測濕計來運行噴霧器的會發現噴霧器一直連續的開在他們控制板上。這使燕屋農場充滿炎熱的濕氣。如果一直持續這樣，那燕屋農場的溫度將直線上升。內部的溫度會上升到31度C以上，霧變熱了把溫度推高。一個熱空氣和細水霧在空氣中的相互作用。這與通風孔的控制做的很差有關，因爲更多的空氣通過通風孔流進燕屋農場。

正如我之前在早期的許多文章中提過，溫度和濕度是2個不同的東西雖然它們是相互關聯的。使用濕度(RH)來降低溫度是不明智之舉。燕屋農場的牆壁、設計、尺寸和通風孔的控制會影響噴霧器產生出來的霧的溫度。

兩個常見的誤解如何降低在燕屋農場中的溫度：

1） 增加通風孔的數量（更多的熱空氣被吸入燕屋農場的內部，因爲外面

    的溫度是40度C)

2） 增加噴霧器(RH)

如果以上所述的不適當管理，它將把溫度推高。高的溫度和濕度環境鼓勵真菌和黴菌的生長。現在由於試圖降低燕屋農場的溫度而出現了另外一個問題。（除非木板是深褐色的Meranti。我懷疑，如于90%的燕屋農場都是在使用粉紅色的木板也是被稱為Meranti的)。

作為一個經驗的法則，每140-200s/f就用一個4"的PVC管的通風孔。（除了這個，還有其他因素，例如牆上的材料，燕屋農場的大小、 設計等也會影響溫度）。

一個正確修建的燕屋農場只需要在最炎熱的季節期間開動噴霧器一天3次（每次20分鐘）。減少到每天2次在普通一天，當最炎熱的季節結束之後。

HIGH TEMPERATURE And HIGH HUMIDITY in SWIFTLET FARM

The outside temperature rises to 40C. The year before, during this period it was not like this. It had rained almost every other week. The past few months the temperature has been extreme reaching 40C in the afternoon. It has been the hottest season since 2006.

Even well built Swiftlet  Farms with good insulation materials suffer heat problems what more for those Swiftlet Farms that are built with single layered brick, poor control of ventilation system, poorly manage of exhaust fan, poor control of RH (humidity) etc..

Swiftlet farms that run Humidifiers 3 times a day for 30 minutes each session still couldn’t get the preferred humidity above 80% (RH).

Many Swiftlet farms which run Humidifiers on Hygrostat would encounter a continuously on mode on their control panels. This makes the Swiftlet farms wet with hot mist. If  persisted the temperature of the Swiftlet farm would shoot up. Internal temperature would rise above 31C  the mist becomes hot and pushes up the temperature. An  interaction of hot air and fine water droplets in the air. This has very much to do with  poor control of ventilation holes as more air is drawn into the farm through ventilation holes.

As I have mentioned in many of my earlier articles, Humidity and Temperature are 2 different things though they are interrelated. Using humidity (RH) to reduce temperature is not a wise move. The walls, the design, the sizes and the control of ventilation holes of the Swiftlet farm influence the temperature of the mist produced by the Humidifiers.

Two common misperception on  reducing temperature in Swiftlet farm:

1) Increase the number of ventilation holes ( more hot air is drawn into the Internal as outside               temperature is 40C) 

2) Increase  humidity (RH)

If  the above is not properly managed, it would push up the temperature. High humidity and temperature environment encourages the growth of fungus and mold. Now another problem arises as a result of trying to bring down the temperature of the farm. ( Unless the Nesting Plank is of Dark brown Meranti. I doubted it, as 90% Swiftlet farm is using the Pink type Nesting Plank which is also called Meranti).

As a rule of thumb, one ventilation hole  of 4”  PVC pipe for every 140-200 s/f . (Besides this other factors such as material of the wall, sizes of farm, design, etc. also influence the temperature).

A properly built Swiftlet farm only needs to run its Humidifiers 3 times a day ( 20 minutes) during the hot season. Reduce to 2 times a day on a normal day when the hot extreme season is over.

Swiftlet Sound Frequency

I have always emphasized on the importance of sound frequency below 20Hz for Internal sound when doing Swiftlet sound recording. I believe the frequency of  Swiftlet chicks (baby birds) are much lower compared to the External sound which plays more of  Adult birds sound. After many years of experiment and experience of witnessing young Swiftlets hanging on the Internal tweeters for hours after an Internal sound was played. I knew both  Internal and the External Sound frequencies are entirely different. They both attract different Swiftlets (Different listeners). Both have their own set of frequencies. With such knowledge,   I remixed and recorded them according to their respective frequency. I have been doing this since 2007.

Yesterday while searching for information on sound frequency, I stumbled on an article which strengthen my belief. All this while I was right about the sound of Swiftlet chicks which produce lower sound frequency compared to Adult Swiftlets. Though the article was about human hearing capability, but  I believe it shares some similarities.

“Audio equipment must be able to reproduce frequencies high enough and low enough to be realistic. The human hearing range, for healthy young persons, is 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. [11] Most adults can't hear higher than 15 kHz.[9] CDs are capable of reproducing frequencies as low as 10 Hz and as high as 22.05 kHz, making their frequency range adequate for reproducing all the frequencies that people can hear.[9]

The equipment must also provide no noticeable distortion of the signal or emphasis or de-emphasis of any frequency in this frequency range”.

Notably it shows that we need a different set of frequencies for different Internal and external sound. Tuning the Amplifier “Bass, Middle and Treble” can effectively alter the sound. The Bass and Middle control knobs are vital for the effectiveness of Internal sound while External sound relies on the Treble knob. The same applies  to  Amplifiers that have multiple control knobs “equalizer”.

There are many types of Amplifier on the market, but not all are specially made for Swiftlet farming. Most Amplifiers in the Market are factory tuned to a frequency towards 20,000Hz. This makes the sound more crisp and sharp which is good for Instrumental and Vocal quality. But Swiftlet chirping sounds response is different. It may be good for our hearing, but the sounds came out from these Amplifiers may not attract many birds.

To Maximize on this, 2 most important things we need to have are:

1) The original recording of the Swiftlet sound has to be recorded to the frequency based on its application. ( Internal or External use).

2) The Amplifier  that plays these sounds (Internal or External) have to be properly tuned according to its frequency. Bear in mind the frequency of both Internal and External are set differently.
