“James, I have a farm in T.Malim. It has been 2 years now. How come it has less than 12 nests?”

.“Well you should ask the person who build the farm for you. I have not seen your farm I can’t tell much.”

.“James he is a professional and an expert from the Pahang . He had built hundreds of farms but how come mine is like this?”

.“I replied there are no such thing call professional or an expert to me. The only difference is can one make a good successful farm or otherwise.” If one cannot built a good farm whatever names they may be called then it’s useless.”

.This is what I encountered when meeting Mr. K from T.Malim. The renovation of his farm 2 years ago cost more than Rm 50k. He is complaining now that his investment is gone.

.I repeatedly told him don’t worry you are not the only one there are thousands out there shared the same faith.

.After listened to this I think he feels a little comfortable..

.But Mr.K keeps telling me that his farm’s internal condition is within acceptable level and he had controlled it well. (I told myself wait till I visit the farm then it will be a different story).

.He told me he had met with many professionals and had attended some courses .He knows the importance of Temp, humidity, Aroma, sound, etc. It shouldn’t be the problem of these internal factors furthermore his farm was built by a professional (consultant).

.I replied many people knew these basic requirements of farm like temp: 27-30C, Rh: 75-90%, sound: int & Ext, etc now it has become common knowledge. In fact most farms had achieved this but it is beyond this that the birds are looking for.

.I prompted him, when the so called expert or professional told you about the simple knowledge of farm’s temp must be at 27-30C did they ever told you how to achieved it or how to get to this perimeter?

.Mr.K replied no never, they just said your farm temp must at 27-30C that all. Ha..ha..ha.. I laughed.

.I told him “I am sure they never tell you or teach you the specific details about all the micro factors and how to achieve them to a level that liked by birds and how to manipulate it to your control to create a good internal environment that once new Swiftlets visited your farm they will make it their homes. Perhaps they themselves may not know it at all, so how to teach you?” So just ask you to change your Cd sound and buy a new sound.

.There are many things beyond the basic that 80% farmers are unaware of when it comes to Swiftlet farming that is why some farms could have 340 nests after 10 months of operation while many only have less than 20 nests after couple of years.

/Farm’s condition changes over time, every month the weather is different, every weeks there are new farms coming up all these create an impact to your farm. Be ready to change and note the changes.

/But before that make sure you know, what successful farming is.

/After a lengthy conversation I was asked to view his farm and rectify the problems but I told him not these few weeks perhaps next month as I’m tight- up with few appointment of revamping and construction of new farm.

但是K先生继续告诉我他的燕屋農場的屋內環境是在可接受的水平之內，並且他控制的很好。 (我告訴了自己，待我參觀了燕屋農場之後，它將是一個不同的故事)。

他告訴了我他见過許多專家和上了許多燕屋課成。他知道溫度、濕度、芳香、聲音等等的重要性。 它應該不是屋內環境的因素問題，此外他的燕屋農場是由專家(顧問)建造的。

Often I received calls asking, “James, can I build a Swiftlets Farm in my area in………..”

“I reply everywhere in Malaysia you can build a Swiftlet farm but how successful it will be it will depend on many factors”.

Even in the middle of Kuala Lumpur you could build a farm would the food source around is sustainable to support the needs of the birds?

.

If you build a farm in a good area with plentiful of food sources then the chances of success is higher but then again other factors such as Design, micro control, etc also have to be equally good.

..

Every single part plays an important role, in swiftlet farming all factors must be at it optimum level. This is called perfect farm. That is why you would hear farms of 2 years old are harvesting good kgs of nests. That is not impossible I have seen many of these perfect farms.

.

I live in Subang Jaya . There are quite many swiftlet activities here. Often in the morning I could see hundred of swiftlets chasing after insect especially after rain. Well by looking at the number of swiftlet here I am assured for those who wanted to get involve in swiftlet farming would be happy to have a farm here. With such number it could justify a farm at this area.

But I would see it differently I often tell my readers don’t be too happy when you see many birds in the sky. (Especially when you do a birds test or…). Those birds do not belong to you until they stay and make nests in your farm. Go to a Prime Zone Area, does a bird test, thousands of birds will come. It doesn’t belong to you if you are unable to entice them to make nest in your farm.

Most birds from here are from the areas of K. Kemuning, Puchong, Dengkil,etc. As I observed they pass by Subang Jaya as they search for food and S.jaya is a place famous for termites. Almost all houses here are infested with termite that including mine. If you drive around here you would see many signages offering Pest (termites) control.

When it rains it will be a food heaven for Swiftlets. Nevertheless it would not be wise to have a farm here as the lands and properties are too expensive and if you have a shop lot here it is much profitable to rent it out rather than for swiftlet farming.

So for those who wanted to build a farm in a particular area must understand the geographical of the area, movement of birds in the area, food source, etc. These are the external factors which is very important.

.

After that come the internal factors. This depends on how well your knowledge in Swiftlet farming. . Do you have the ability to design, manage and control them? If yes within 2-3 years the swiftlets will take care of you.

Spend 2-3 years taking care of the Swiftlets they will take care of you the rest of your life (financially).

「您能在馬來西亞任何地方修建燕屋農場，但是的成功將取决于許多因素」。

您可以在吉隆坡中心修建燕屋農場，但是，食物的來源是否能承擔和支持燕子的需要？

如果您要修造一個燕屋農場在豐富食物來源的一個好區域，成功机會更高，當然其他因素例如設計的，屋内環境控制等等必須也是同樣好的。

每一個部分扮演一個重要角色，在燕屋所有的因素必须是在它最理想的水平。 這称為完善的燕屋農場。 所以您聽見兩年的燕屋農場收穫好幾公斤的窩。 那不是不可能的，我看見了許多這些完善的燕屋農場。

New Ruling Next Year For Selangor Farms

Few days ago a Chinese Daily reported that the Selangor local government would implement licensing for Swiftlets farms in Selangor and they want all farm’s owners in the state to abide by the new ruling.

Guess what? The new proposed ruling or regulations were as follows:

1) To record Swiftlets info such as swiftlets type, no of eggs, etc *

.

2) Records the number of swiftlet in farms *

.

3) Yearly renewal of license

.

4) Water in ponds in farms must change regularly to prevent breeding of mosquito

.

5) Removing and cleaning of birds shit from farms

.

6) Vaccination of babies swiftlets *

.

7) Weekly fumigate of farms *]

.

8) The farm must be constantly dry *

.

9) Farms must be 100 m away from residential areas.

.

10) Rainy season owner of farms must make sure the internal temperature maintain at 30-37C. *

.

This is what they call wanted to make Malaysia the hub of EBN trading and processing in Asia.

Do you think they could make it I guess you all already know the answer.

Those who proposed the regulations seemed very much from the Dept of Chicken Farming .

How about removing the beak of the Birds or only breed female swiftlets only as they could laid eggs.

Totally lack the knowledge in Swiftlet farming. Like I had always said, it doesn’t matter who you are, how famous you are, what position you are in, if you know nothing about Swiftlet farming you cannot simply propose rulings or regulations as these ruling would affect the rice bowl of all farmers and the whole Swiflet farming industry as well.

Meeting with a Reader who asks about Partitioning in farm.

(did you notice any problem with this partition?)

Mr. G has been persistently calling me. He wanted to meet up with me to collect Love Potion directly from me In K.L. Unfortunately I was not free as I have other things to attend to and I was very tire from my travelling( Farm visiting). He came all the way from Parit Buntar. In fact I do go there when I travel to the North I would make it a point to stop by to meet some old friends and some readers as well.

But last month my schedule was very tight and I only managed to stop by Taiping, Trong and Pantai Remis. After that I have to rush back to K.L because the next day I have to be in Melaka.

.

He calls again and again as I reached K.L it was already 7 pm. I even offer to courier the Love Potion he ordered and the postage I absorb but he still insisted he wanted to see me. His persistency really impressed me. I was very tire but I make it a point to meet him.

.

Finally we met at USJ 16. He was a young farmer. He was very happy to have met me. He told me he had wanted to go into this business since year 2000 but unfortunate he doesn’t has the fund then. After convincing some friends and partners and from his saving now they owned a stand alone farm which started in May 09. He told me as today it has more than 60 birds.

.

I told him, Mr. G …. It is good to see you. Sorry for pushing away the appointment earlier. What can I do for you and how can I help you?

.

Mr. G.You may ask any question you want be it anything but making sure it’s related to swiftlet farming….I smiled.

.

He was muted for a while and I told him next time you may write it down in a piece of paper it can be hundred questions or thousand questions, no problem!

.

One of the questions he asked that I would like to share with you all is “Should a farm be partitioned or not”

.

1) Well it depends on the size and the design of the farm. If the farm’s design permits too much sunlight getting into the farm then partitioning is needed.

.

2) If the farm is too big 30x 100 ft and sort for then partitioning is needed. This is to create a cozy environment. Otherwise a trick partition is needed.

.

3) Partitioning also can be use as a tool to control the internal micro. (Temp & Humidity).

.

4) Partition also can be use as a tool to control the flying path of the birds. In other words it works as directing swiftlet to certain parts of the farm. * This has to be done perfectly and by with people with in-depth knowledge of birds flying path otherwise it will threat.*

.

5) The material of the partition is also very important. If the material is of soft material that absorb sound then the echolocation of the Swiftlet ( sonar) cannot work effectively and making flying difficulty in dark and swiftlet will not stay to make nest.* I have witness myself a Swiftlet banged on the partition right in front of me when I inspecting a failed farm in S. Bakap.*

You see just about partition there are already so many do and don’t what about Darkness, Temp, Humidity, Design, Material, Location, etc. Many farmers think it is simple as long they get the above correct in fact I can tell you it is definitely more than that. That is why 80% farms failed even they can get to the above perimeter.

This is how it makes Swiftlet farming so interesting so much more to learn. For sure you can’t be an expert in just 3 or 5 days talks. It takes years.

.

Unfortunately I could only spend an hour with Mr. G. as I have to rush back home to pack my things and get ready for tomorrow travelling.

Revisit the Farm that I Revamped (How to reduce Temp)

Last week I was at the North routine checking out the farm that I had revamped few months back. Ever since the revamp this farm has 8 full cup nests some with babies and eggs. There are also few new nests marking.

I had written about this farm in my previous post. We had managed to bring down the temperature and increased the Humidity. Before the revamp the temperature was high and the humidity was very unstable. All birds left this farm and there was not a single new bird shit spot.

We use zinc sheets to shield it from the direct sun. In between the walls and the zincs we create a gap so that there will be air movement to cool down the walls and the zinc sheets.

This theory is the same like those cooling blades on motorbike engine. The more blades it has the faster it will cool down the engine. The thinner it is the better.

By doing this we managed to reduce the temperature by 2-4 C obviously this is for walls that are not thick especially single layer bricks (sands type). If the walls are thick enough then you don’t need the zinc sheets.

The Zinc sheet is locked on to the wall by nuts on steel bars. Well it will last many years. No worries of it being blown away by strong wind and will last for many years to come.

I had seen many using orchard netting. It doesn’t work that well. In term of cost it is cheaper but it is not worth in long term. Tested, it only could reduce temp by mere 1C or less. It is not resistant to dry and wet rot. Easily tear ( in strong wind areas) probably last a year or more.

Secondly if it is not installed tightly it will move when the wind blows and often than not this scare away birds because of it large sizes.

You could see in the pictures that nests are being built at the Tweeters and you could see double tweeters. Well birds love sound and tweeters produce sound so we give them double tweeters and they give us nests. (Double nests..ha..ha.)

The owner is also a Swiftlets farm enthusiast he took the effort to install the DIY bazooka caller at the entrance hole and at the side of the building. Well it helps to attract more birds.

While my visit there I changed the Ext sound to attract more birds. Some may ask how often one should change the ext sound. Well it depends ….it could be 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months…………and so on.

It depends on the attractiveness of the sound. Well perhaps I would discuss about this in my next post.

Extention & Merging of Old & New Farm

Extention of farm at the back portion of pre-war building

A very successful merging of old farm and new farm. It seems less than 2 years there're already xx kgs.

Merging a new farm with an old successful farm is not easy but can be done. There are many cases where swiftlets from an old farm that harvesting many good kgs of nests reluctant to fly or stay at the new extended farm even after few years.

I have seen quite few of such situations. This is common. One may copy or duplicate the exact layout of the old farm or using back the same sound, etc but birds still reluctant to fly in to the extended new building to nest.

I recon, the reason being is uneasy accessibility. If the extended new wing is hard for the birds to access then it will take a long time for them to adapt thus not building nests. The layout or the design of the new wing should be done in a way that it tricks the birds that the new wing has been there for long time.

Some farmers are practicing prolong adaptation. This is not to frighten the birds. Commonly when the new wing or the adjacent block is completed the inter-hole between the old and the new building is not opened in full. A 1x1ft inter-hole is opened initially and gradually after 2-3 months the inter-hole size is opened large and larger till it accommodates the growing numbers of switlets in the farm.

Correctly putting the inter-hole that connects between the old farm and new farm is very important. If placed on the wrong area then birds will not fly into the new building.

Many would opt for such practice rather than building another new farm next to the old successful farm. Even though you may use back the same sound the same design layout but chances of having many swiftlets to occupy the new farm is slower than merging and old farm with new one.

Many believe that pre-war building has higher chances of success when comes to farming. Therefore pre-war buildings were transformed into farm and later when the population increased a new wing is built.

Well I can tell you that is true. The reason is pre-war building has a better micro condition control than the current new building with low roof and zinc roof.

Pre-war buildings are of 100% good clay bricks compared to current ones that use sand bricks for cost saving. Their walls are thicker at least double the thickness and there are many more advantages……..

So if you want to extend your farm make sure the materials use if not better at least it is on par with the pre-war building.

If you know how to do it is not that hard to entice the birds from one farm to another. In fact even colonies could be enticed to different sections of farm. This how we expand the population of swiftlet in farms.

My apology to all my readers who read my blog everyday. Recently I am busy with lots of new activities related to swiftlet farming.

Without forgetting managing quite number of farms. It's really taken up lots of my time and I often come home late and wake up early. As usual with such hectic work schedule I can not avoid sickness.

I was down with cold and decided to take a rest. Now I am OK. I shall up date my blog as often as possible.
