Mirror Like Harvesting Spade

(the spade works also as a mirror)

Some of my readers called me and asked , where did I get a harvesting spade that is so shinny like a mirror. They cried that most of the time they have to carry a small mirror with them for harvesting to check whether there are eggs in the nests. Often it is troublesome.

Well it is simple get a good quality Spade which is 100% S.Steel. Never opt for the cheap one. There are many in the market which are metal plated with chrome. This type will rust.

If you use a cheap quality spade with poor material when polishing with Braraso this liquid will eat into it and eventually making it blur instead of shinny. Use Braraso liquid to polish them prior to harvesting. This will save lots of fatigue of changing between mirror and spade.

Good one cause around Rm 20-30.00. Bear in mind a good one will last a life time. With the good one you really don’t need a mirror anymore.

After polished with Braraso wash it with soap to wash away the strong Braraso smell.

Farm on Luxury Resident Area.

(This buiding has been there quite a while now there are buiding another one next to it. Thats why it got noticed because of the second building)


RESIDENTS of Country Heights Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, are resenting the bird calls they hear every day and night from an illegal bird nest building next door.

The massive three-storey structure built on a hill near the posh neighbourhood has been there for more than six months and attracts a large number of swiftlets into the building.

At first, residents were puzzled by the constant noise from the jungle that never ceased until they discovered the activity.

“We were surprised that the jungle was so noisy, then we found out that an electronic musical sound mimicking birds had been placed inside the building to attract the swiftlets,” said Pete Meehan.

He added that people bought the RM8mil to RM10mil homes to enjoy peace and quiet only to be disturbed by the sound of birds.

According to another resident, Ang Kim Jhew, they have made at least six complaints to the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) since April.

“We were later told the problem is under the Department of Environment (DoE) and we complained to them as well. DoE later sent a letter to the DBKL supporting our complaint,” added Ang.

However, no action has been taken so far. They are also worried about environmental issues, including the droppings.

The residents contacted Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng to help them in their task.

“I have checked with the DBKL and they told me that there has been no permit for bird’s nest harvesting in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

Lim and StarMetro visited the site and found another structure being built.

When asked, the Indonesian workers who declined to be named, said the new structure was a section of rooms to be rented out.

The bird’s nest building was also locked and the workers said they did not have the keys to the building.

“We have not harvested the nests yet but there have been many birds coming and in out of the building,” said the worker.

Lim said he would lodge an official statement with the DBKL on behalf of the residents and would give the council two weeks to resolve the problem.

“I will ask that the man running the business be served a notice to close down the place and if the structure is illegal the owner will have to tear that down as well,” he added.

When contacted, DBKL’s corporate communications unit said they were aware of the problem and that the structure was illegal as it was built without a development order.

DBKL confirmed it will be taking action against the businessman as soon as possible.

The man, who did not want to be named, refused to talk to the press.

Eggs in Nest in New Farm

The number of eggs in nests in farm indicates the future of the farm. As we know A.Fuciphagus lays 1-2 eggs per brood and often if the condition of the farm is at its best most nests would have 2 eggs. (Some cases 3 eggs but rare).

It is very important to know this especially for new farms that have just occupied or stayed by Swiftlets. This would indicate how the farm would perforce in term of nests growth and bird’s population in the future.

Often many would not have noticed this. Like I had always said whatever happens in farms or changes it does tell tales. Its only depends on how well we could interpret the changes and the signs in the farm.

If a new farm that has operated for few months which has few nests and most of the nests have 2 eggs. It shows a good sign. This indicates that the environment is acceptable and the birds are adapting to the farm.

If most of the nests have 1 egg then it is not a good sign. This indicates something somewhere must have gone wrong. The farm owner needs to rectify this urgently. If such sign persisted often the nests growth and birds’ population in future would be affected.

This is due to the farm’s environment that causes stress to the birds. This could be the farm design, its micro and macro, and so on…………………………………

Naturally any effect that causes stress to the parents of the birds it would affect their production of eggs. This is natural instinct in bird to help them to survive.

One of the good examples is food. If the food source is depleting in an area the sizes of nests would be smaller. Some parents may event push out one of the 2 chicks and concentrate to take care one. This is to make sure at least one survives. This often happens during draught season when a food (insects) is scare.

Some may even abandon their nests and this causes migration. So it is uncommon to see dead chicks and eggs that are not hatched on farm’s floor. If this happened it must be rectify immediately. (It could also be due to predators as well that frighten the birds thus causing stress).

Whatever it is everything in the farm indicates something. In order to interpret and understand all these signs one has to be very observance and sharp.

明白大自然 (用鋅来修建燕屋農場)

上星期我在Perak南部，並且我希望與大家分享這些獨特的燕屋農場所有都是在河口的。 大多數都是使用鋅材料修建的。 許多將会想知道这样不會影屋内环境吗？ 但是一些也許不会这样想。

Understand Nature (Using Zinc to Build Farm)

Last week I was at the South of Perak and I would like to share with you all these unique Swiftlet farms which located at the river mouth. Most of them are using Zinc material to construct. Many would wonder wouldn’t the micro would be affected? But some may think otherwise.

Some may not agree with me that using Zinc to build farm would ended up fail. They argued that if Zinc which transmitted heat that causes the farm internal environment unstable thus making it fail then why there are quite number of farms that uses Zinc are very successful.

The catch is here, it depends where the farm is being built. If the farm is built at an area that has an average temperature of 27-29C with constantly wind and breeze then you could use Zinc as material, in fact thin ply wood will do the job.

Secondly the soil there couldn’t support heavy load therefore using cement and brick would require good foundation that would cost lots of money.

Using light material would solve this. In the other hand the farmers here had incidentally making use of the nature environment (High Rh, Wind, etc) without realizing it thus claiming that “even using Zinc material farms still can be successful”

If the surrounded areas have an average temperature of about 30C and above which in most towns that located farm away from the sea and river then if one uses Zinc then the farm would be in big trouble.

Swiftlet farming is all about flexibility and intelligent to understand the Micro and Macro. Thereafter applying this knowledge and combine them and make the most out of it. There is no straight forward answer and solution. It has to be a combination of variety of effects to see the results.

Look at the above picture, in such cases the humidity in this area is high and the farms are making use of the humidity here. Even if they would have to install humidifiers here during hot season the period of running the humidifier would be very short compared to those farms that are located in town area.

Nature is wonderful it up to us to understand it and use it intelligently to our benefit.

The common question asked by my readers “There are so many farms now and the competition is so stiff. Is it worth to invest in this business?”

Well it depends on you whether you have the entrepreneurship in you or otherwise. There is a saying “Higher the Risk Bigger the Gain” so no risk no gain.

If you know this trade well and have someone to guide you then you would be in the gain side instead of the risk side.

我： 那您應該噴洒在楼上而不是在楼下。 (我是非常的混淆的)。 燕子怎麼可能嗅到呢，如果您噴洒Love Potion在底层，但是您的燕屋農場楼上？

这是因为为什么許多燕屋農場失败。 有這樣的思想怎麼沒有不失败的燕屋農場呢？

如果要人幫助我們，我們必須对人懇切不但只是對我們自己，但是對其他也是。

I Sprayed Love Potion Down Stair!

It was a classic experience that I encountered with one of the most unique user of Love Potion. I think it is good to share some laughter with you all. There are all sorts of farmers in Swiftlet farming. Thru my many years of visiting and revamping farm to building new ones. I encountered all sorts of funny things and this is a classic one that caught me off guarded!

It started …………

I received a call from a farm owner from Jerantut Mr. A. He has just started his farm few months ago. It was a 2 storey shop. The ground floor he uses for his business and the 1st floor converted into swiftlets farm.

He was quite disappointed that after few days his farm started it sounds there were hardly any birds playing around the entrance. After waited for another month there is not a single birds stayed in his farm.

He called me and complained about his dissatisfaction and also complained about the things that his consultant did. He said every time the consultant visited his farm he would follow along so that he could learn something from him but to his disappointment the consultant always asked him to wait outside. He regretted that he engaged this consultant to build his farm. For now he couldn’t do anything but to wait.

He has got no guts to take back the keys from the consultant yet keep complaining about his skill. I think this is not fair to either party.

I advise him to be patient and he should consult his consultant for advice and don’t have to be afraid to ask question pertaining to the farm. He should not ask me about his farm because I am not the one who built his farm. I replied Mr. A I cannot comment on that it is not fair to comment about the things your consultant did so nothing much from my mouth.

He heard about the Love Potion from friends and orders some Love Potions. He followed the instruction and sprayed the Love Potion at his farm.

It was quite a while if I am not mistaken probably 1-2 months ago he had ordered the Love Potion.

He called me few days ago and conversation as follows:

Mr.A: James, how are you? I have bought Love Potion from you, can you still remember me?

Me: I am fine, I think so, and how can I help you?

Mr. A: James, can I spray the Love Potion Down stair?

Me: Down stair? Why only down stair? You should spray all floors.

Mr.A: NO...No…No. I just want to spray down stair. And now after I sprayed Love Potion there are hundreds of birds playing at the entrance hole. Previously there were no birds at all. I am dam happy. So can I spray down stair? Can the birds still smell it?

Me: That is good sign then why do you want to spray down stair only? (I doubted and confused) Is your shop, 2 floors converted into farm?

Mr. A: NO only one floor converted into farm. The ground floor I do business.

Me: Then you should spray up stair not down stair. (Me dam confused). How can the birds smell if you spray Love Potion at ground floor and your farm is on the 1^st floor?

Mr.A : If I spray up stair the consultant don’t allow. Furthermore he would know I am spraying Aroma (Love Potion)

Me: Hey…..Mr.A what do you want now? (I am a bit pissed) Sprayed Love Potion and all birds came, previously there were no birds. Now still not happy. What do you want?

With my sincerity of helping him I ended up as a fool. After a long battle with his stupidity I discovered I was actually being fooled by him. Thru his confession he has no access to his farm. The consultant is holding the keys. What he did was he sprayed the love Potion on the outside wall below the entrance hole. He must have used a ladder to spray the Love Potion on the entrance which is a widow opening.

His consultant doesn’t allow him to have access to his farm. After sprayed Love Potion at the entrance hole there were hundreds of birds swamping into his farm.

He is ashamed to let me know that he has no access to his own farm. He was so silly that he didn’t know that I knew all these. Commonly the consultant will hold the keys of the farm they built. But this farmer thought I knew nothing.

That is why so many farms failed. With such mentality how could not all farms failed?

Sometime we have to be sincere not only to ourselves but to others too if want people to help us.

喷雾器盖“鐵帽子“

我称它为「鐵帽子」鸡舍式潤濕器已在市場上有好几個月了。 之前的一个是藍色的是一个使用汤碗和白色的PVC管子，兩个棍子黏在一起的。 实际上，如果您有时间您可以自己DIY，因為它是可以100% 自己DIY的。

上述的圖片是現在大量生產的。 肯定是沒有環氧黏附和汤碗的介入。是工廠製造精整的而不是DIY的。 您可能看的出區別特别是它的精整。肯定也沒有嚇唬燕子的油漆氣味。

使用这个鐵帽子的原因是它防止和減少薄霧直接擊中天花板和板條。 需知道99%的板條在所有的燕屋農場實際上它不是使用所謂的Meranti。 如果濕氣在燕屋農場超出了某一些水平，這些所謂的Meranti板條可能容易地生長青苔和真菌。

一旦板條被青苔和真菌騷擾並且板條上將有粉狀在表面。 燕窝不可能黏在這樣的表面它將会掉落的。如果您使用鸡舍式潤濕器，要防止这个发生最好使用鐵帽子。

此外使用这个鐵帽子薄霧将均勻地被喷到在45度，均勻地使濕氣覆蓋四面八方。 這能使燕屋农厂的湿度能在最短的时间達到一個有利的水平。

除那以外，使用鸡舍式潤濕器是它很耐久，低維修，也很便宜地，它也可以用于倒入Love Potion。 一旦Love Potion的芳香被做成薄霧燕子完全是变疯狂了。那些有使用這個方法来增加燕子群和燕巢的人明白我的意思。

其次它也可以減少過份濕的地板。之前一些也許利用凳子或椅子来做這個工作的人，现在可以使用這個鐵帽子。現在您可以丢掉PVC椅子了。

要肯定您湿度机的读数是準確的.

有準確的温度和湿度讀数在燕屋農場是非常重要的。 如果讀数在可以接受的水平之下，這將帮助您瞭解您的內部情况和立刻矯正他們。

德國制造的濕度計已在一陣子脫銷，我今天刚好设法得到货。 我會更喜歡这个比是中国制造的。 莫名其妙地我怀疑它的準確性和耐久性。

假使在燕屋農場的情况是潮濕的，並且有很高的氨氣體由于燕子的屎粪掉下在燕屋農場里，電子板在數字式類型的(數字式) 的裡面将儲積由於氧化作用，不會持久的。通常在几个月以后電池將漏由于氧化作用過程。 德國制造的不需要電池经操作。

Humidifier Top Cover " Horn Hat"

I call it the “Horn Hat” for the Chicken coop Humidifier has been in the market for months. The previous one which is blue in color is using a soup bowl and white Pvc pipes, both stick together using epoxy. In fact if you have the time you could DIY yourself since it can be 100% DIY.

The above pictures are the new ones which are mass produced now. Definitely no epoxy sticking and no soup bowl involved. The finishing is factory made not DIY. You could see the differences yourself especially the finishing. Definitely no paint smell that frighten birds away.

The reason of using the Horn Hat is to prevent and to reduce the mist from directly hitting the ceiling and nesting planks. Knowing that 99% of nesting planks in all farms are using so called Meranti in reality it is not. This so called Meranti planks could easily grow fungus and mould if the Humidity in the farm exceeded certain level.

Once the planks are infested with fungus and mould the planks would have powdery surface. Nests couldn’t stick to such surface often it will fall.To prevent this it is better to use the Horn Hat if you are using the Chicken Coop Humidifier.

Furthermore with the Horn Hat the mist is directed evenly to four directions in 45 dg angle making the Humidity coverage more evenly. This mean the farm’s Rh could reach a favorable level in a shorter time.

Besides that, the trick of using the Chicken coop humidifier is that it last long, low maintenance, cheap and it’s being used to pour LOVE POTION into it. Once the aroma of Love potion is made into mist the Swiftlets go crazy. Those who had tried or currently using this method to increase bird’s population and nests understand what I meant.

Secondly it also reduces the floor from excessive wetness. Some may have been using a stool or a chair to do this job before this Horn Hat was available. Well now you could forget about the pvc chair.
