It is very easy to destroy the internal environment but it is hard to make a good one. This is what happened if you do not know how and what it takes to create a good Micro. To screw up one it is as easy as ABC.
I had visited many farms and met up with many farmers. I discovered one common thing about them is that they do not know how to create a good and stable Micro.
Be it a big farm of a small one all of them shared a common idea “more is always better”. More Vent-holes is always better, the higher the Rh the better, the more nesting planks per each sq/ft is better and so on. Some even made pyramid planking system trying to maximize on future harvest which will never come if they can’t even make a good Micro now..
In-depth understanding is very important in Swifttlets farming. It looks simples and easy. Anybody could undertake the whole construction of a new farm. Anybody could build one and own one but could everybody have a successful farm?
I have received countless phone calls and emails asking my opinion and solution to their failed farms. Some of the common questions were:
“My farm’s temp is 28c, Rh 80%, located in a good location, using the best sound, using …. Why after 2 years only have 10 nests?”
“My farm is built by ……(who and who..) .Why after 3 years still the same number of nests?”
Let’s get back to the topic of Vent-Hole, it is uncommon to see 10 Vent-Holes or more in space of 20ft. Many had asked so what is the so called standard number of V-H for 20ft then? Definitely no standardization here.
The answer is depends…. Where the farm located? What is the internal design (partitioning & wall section)? What is the material of the wall…and so on. All these added up would give us a clear picture of how many V-H is required in a particular farm. In fact I had written about the V-H in some of my articles way back in 2008 or 2009 if I could remember I did mention about the advantages and disadvantages of having too many and too few V-H.
The above picture shows the Hot air from outside would enter the farm thru the V-H and pushes out the cooler air in the farm. This makes the temp inside the farm higher.
Whereas for farms that have high internal temperature (32C-34C) then having many V-H it would help to reduce the temp slightly.
The famous theory of “combination of bottom and top V-H” which written in many books only works for environment that has no wind movement at all which is impossible. Tell me which area a farm located 24hrs there is no wind movement? Yes there is a place …in the SPACE and the Moon.
In picture B it shows hot air constantly escape thru the Top V-H. It means the ceiling or the Nesting planks areas are constantly hot with hot air. If this is the case then it would be very hard for the Swiftlets to build nests.
If you think beyond this and use a little of your intelligent you would discover that building a good farms is more than just reading books and attending seminars.

我的朋友： 沒有啦，我还沒有開始仍然在等待章程和執照。我不敢啦，怕那些從政府的人來捣乱。
我： 但是我聽見阿K做他的燕屋農場做的相當好的。 几个月前當我回家乡清明的时候遇見了我們家乡的一个好朋友。 他說阿K每個月都有好几公斤的收穫。 到底发生了什么在您身上？ 我以为你們倆各个目買了一個商店的單位来做燕屋農場。
我的朋友： 它沒有實現啦，因為我害怕，我不想要非法地开始因为当时它没有適當的准許和指南。 但是阿K却继续。 您知道他的工作本质啦… 他是大哥…. 他不害怕的，並且對所有的文件和執照的事也一不關心。
我： E，您说的非法是什么意思？您要它首先被合法化在您投資之前？ 您4年前是这样說但是今天您还是这样說。

我的朋友： 好的，没問題，但是讓我请您，以便您可以教我一些燕屋農場的技能。
我： 沒有問題。 我可以教您任何的东西，但是，如果您沒有擁有任何的燕屋農場，無論您學會了什么技術都是沒有用的。

I met a long time friend few days ago at a Hardware shop. I have not seen him for many years. It is sort of a lost contact. I have lost my mobile few times and all the contact inside gone that included his number.
He saw me and patted me on my shoulder and called me “Sifu”. It was great to have seen him again. I was looking for a table saw there. He has not changed much.
My Friend: Sifu James! Oooi what are you doing here?
Me: Hi E, wah what a surprise. I am looking for table saw. Haven’t seen you for a long time how have you been?
My friend: As usual loh...normal..loh..
Me: Are you on your own or still with that company…?
My friend: Yes still the same company lah. Not like you. You are better than me lah. I am still working for people.
Me: Hey don’t say that. What about your farm? I heard that you all wanted to start swiftlet farming few years ago then what happened?
My friend: No lah , I didn’t start still waiting for the regulation and licenses. I don’t dare lah after the people from the government come and kacau.
Me: But I heard that Ah K is doing quite well with his farm. I met a friend from our Kampong few months back when I went back for Ching Beng. He said Ah K is harvesting many kgs of nests every month. What happened to you? I thought both of you bought one unit of shop lot each for the purpose of Swiftlet farming.
My friend: It didn’t materialize lah because I was afraid and I don’t want to go into it illegally without proper licensing and without the guidelines. Ah K went ahead. You know his nature of job lah…taiko thing…. He is not afraid and don’t care about all the paper and license thing one.
Me: E, what do you mean by illegal? You mean you want it to be legalized first before you invest? You said that 4 years ago and now you still saying it today.
My friend: Ya lah, should have gone into it now wasted 4 years. Ah K now has more than 2 farms. Maybe I wait another year and see what the outcome of the guideline is.
Me: Ha..ha.. E ..you could wait if you want to but many of your friends are already accumulation their harvest and wealth while you’re still waiting. How about Teh Tarik ?
My friend: Ok no problem let me buy you a drink so that you could teach me some of your swiftlet farming skills.
Me: No problem. I could teach you anything you want but if you don’t own any farm no matter how much technique you have learned is of no use.
So both of us went for Teh Tarik at the mamak across the Road.
This is what happened to a friend of mine. After 4 years he still hesitates to go into swiftlet farming. While he is still waiting for the so call guidelines most of his friends are already harvesting nests.
Mr.E didn’t go into it because he is a kind of person who follows the book and live by the book. It is not that he is afraid of losing his investment. He has me as a friend who is willing to teach him anything he wants. We were from the same Kampong and go to the same school. I knew him too well.
Secondly you need to have a farm in order to learn more skills in Swiftlet farming. But sad to say so there are many out there that includes Consultants who don’t own a single farm but is being engaged by many to design and build farms.

上星期我被邀請去參觀南部的一個燕屋農場。 我延期了好几次因为我本身的燕屋農場事务，但是G先生再次的打了好几次電話给我和堅持我參觀他的燕屋農場。
他事先已雇用了几位本地的顧問来幫助他，但是莫名其妙地还是沒有什么改善。 只有少于10个窝在2年半的操作之后。
G先生 ： James您一定是非常的繁忙的，但是不要忘記來幫我。 上星期我們本因该见面的。 因此，您是几时得空來B.Pahat呢 ？
我： 嗨G先生，真抱歉。 我希望這個週末可以到您的地方。 希望到时候我会完成我所有的事。
G先生 ： 太好了! 希望这次不会再延期了？ 我不想要再等待。 我想要赶快解決这个問題。
我： 好的， Ok ......

它是一個2層樓燕屋農場。 其中一個最大的問題是在燕屋農場的濕氣。 我不需要濕度測計机就可以知道。 當我走入燕屋農場时我就可能感覺到和嗅到那股濕气。 真的太濕了。我问了G先生是谁要把燕屋農場弄到這样濕的？ 他回復了，是顧問的想法。 他們說濕氣越高越好。
我说了，那不是必要的。 任何东西都有它的限制。 太多或太少都是不好的。 它必須是有適度和平衡的。 所以我們称它为「均衡」我告訴他。 他回復了，沒人告訴了我包括那些顧….
我告訴他您的板條是玩蛋了。 濕氣太重，並且所有的板條已有青苔和真菌，燕子要怎麼在这样的板條做窝呢？

我參觀过的燕屋農場里10间有7间是有板條問題的。问题是它有多严重。 一些只是30%的板條問題，有一些是60%的板條問題等等。 如果您使用的是真正的深紅Meranti任何高的湿度也不會是問題。
G先生的燕屋農場不僅是板條有問題，它的燕屋農場內部設計也是不对的，燕子要飞到達筑窝区域也是另外的問題。 燕子必須從入口飞向U字型再轉向另一的洞口然後再飞Ziz-Zag 型才可以进入屋子。
我问G先生您需要那么多的房间吗。 他回復了，顾…說這一間房间是非常重要的因为燕子会在这里交配和做窝的。 我再问他，哦，那您已经決定了燕子應該在那里交配和做窝，是不是？ 他傻了......，並且回復我，因该是如此….
我再问，如果是这样那為什麼燕子沒有跟隨您的計劃呢？ G先生…. 再傻了…不要紧。
我告訴他「新的燕子是如此艱苦的飞入，而小燕子是如此艱苦的往外飛，因此…答案是死路一条」!
除了那以外，声音系统安排也是可悲的。 所有的高音揚聲器連接到一個放大器。 那就是一个聲音给所有的，內部和外部。 (顧問说這是為了节省費用)。
這個燕屋農場真正地是令人讨厌。 要修補它也是不容易的。 板條必須更换。 有些牆壁必須拆下，电線，声音系统等等.............
我告诉他，您需要花費相當多来搶救您的燕屋農場。 他为這樣的差錯而付出非常重的教训。 我可憐他。 他的最大的差錯就是選擇他認為是有经验和价格的人。 最终他需要付出雙倍本来應該是很少的价钱。
我經常看見這樣的情景和它是非常普通的在燕屋農場这个行业。

( sauna steam bath inside.)Last week I was invited to visit a farm in the South. I had postponed it few times due to my ongoing swiftlet farming projects but Mr. G calls again and insisted I see his farm.
He had engaged few local consultants to help him but somehow there is no improvement. There were less than 10 nests after 2-1/2 years of operation.
Mr.G: James you must be very busy but don’t forget to come and help me. Last week we supposed to meet. So when are you free to come to B.Pahat?
Me: Hi Mr.G, sorry for the delay. I will be at your place hopefully this weekend. I hope by then I shall clear all my things.
Mr.G: Yes very good! Make sure no more postpone Ok? I don’t want to wait anymore. I want to solve the problems.
Me: Ok, Ok……
Mr.G : Thank you very much . I will wait for you.
His farm is located not far from B.Pahat town. In fact is a good area for Swiftlet farming and how come there are so few nests in his farm. Before I entered the farm I anticipated there must be problems here that most of the consultants didn’t notice perhaps they might not know.
I had always said “there is no smoke if there is no fire”. Perhaps many of them didn’t notice the smoke or they can’t find the fire.
Even if they had found the fire they may not have the expertise to put off the fire. Hey! I hope you all get what I mean. Not as easy as putting off a fire with water!
It was a 2 storey farm. One of the biggest problems was the humidity in the farm. I don’t need a Hygrostat to know this. As I walked into the farm I could sense and smell the wet air. It was too wet. I asked Mr.G whose idea is this making the farm so wet? He replied, it was the consultants’ idea. They said the higher the Humidity the better.
I replied, that is not necessary. Everything has it limit. Too much or too little is not good. It has to be moderate and balance. That is why we call it “ STABLE” I told him that. He replied, no one had ever told me this that included the cons….
I told him your planks are gone. The humidity is too high and all the planks have mould and fungus then how are the Swiftlets going to make nests on the planks?
When fungus and mould grow on planks they produce the powdery form of residue on the planks. The powdery residue prevents the saliva of Swiftlets from stick on planks. Often the swiftlets tried to build the nests and at the end they would give up. Then they would seek for other farms that have no planks problem to make nests.
Have you ever noticed on the planks with many new nests marking in a straight row and later after few weeks or months there are not even single nest? Often most would say the birds have left or they don’t like the place and so on…..This could be planking problem.
Simple go and touch your planks with your palm. Sweeping them few times with your palm. If you could feel the powdery effect on the planks then you have to watch out the humidity in the farm.
Secondly nowadays there are so many poor quality planks sold in the market claimed to be Meranti in no time 90% of all farm will have fungus and mould problem.
7 out of 10 farms I had visited have planks problem. It is a matter of how severe there are. Some 30% infested, some 60% infested and so on. If one uses a genuine Dark Red Meranti high Humidity would not be a problem.
Not only Mr.G’s farm has plank problem the internal design was bad that birds having problem reaching the nesting areas. The Birds have to take a U-turn to enter the roving from the entrance hole then another Ziz-Zag to enter the nesting rooms.
I asked Mr.G why you need so many rooms. He replied, the Cons… said this is a very important room for birds to mate and make nests. I told him Oh so you had decided where the birds should mate and make nests isn’t it? He was blurred……and replied I think so….
I replied, if so how come the birds didn’t follow what you had planned? Mr. G…. blurred again…never mind.
I told him “new birds are so hard to fly in and young birds are so hard to fly out so”…the answer is DEAD END!
Besides that the sound system arrangement is suck. One amplifier for all Tweeters connections. That’s mean one sound for all, internal & external. (This is to save cost by the consultant).
This farm is really pain in the neck. It is not easy to revamp. The Planks have to go. Some walls have to come down too, wiring, sound system, etc………….
I told him you need to spend quite a lot to salvage your farm. He pays very hefty to learn from such mistake. I pity him. His biggest mistake was choosing someone who he thought was good in Swiftlet farming and pricing factor. At the end he is paying double for what should be less.
Well I often seen such scenario and it is very common in Swiftlet Farming .

There are few Hypnotic External sounds now using in the South and the East Coast as well as in Sarawak and Sabah by my readers the results fantastic claimed by them. It was sent out 2 months ago and wanted to be kept low-profile.

The technique he uses to build his farm is fantastic. It created a good micro. Though the farm is quite narrow which I personally don’t favor but overall it is good.
I had advised him to take necessary step and make some changes, if he wants the birds to stay and make nests.
For those who have experience by looking at the pictures I am sure you know where the limitations are.
