SWIFTLET FARM USING EXTERNAL SOUND-Gezillion Star 8
Why birds are not flying in? Why they hardly want to come near the entrance hole? Why they play at the tweeters but reluctant to fly into the farm. These are the commonly asked questions and many.
There are many reasons for this but let’s look at one of the most important factors “ the Design of the Roving area which includes the entrance hole , its sizes, the height and so on.
Let’s take Dog Kennel (DK) as an example. The size height and shape influence the flying path of the birds. If it is not properly planned to accommodate the flying path of the birds then birds wouldn’t fly in.
Swiftlets need certain space to maneuver. If the angle is too narrow they would avoid it. This is Swiftlet’s natural instinct because if they make mistake and hit the wall they would fall and that is the end of the swiftlets. Once they fall on the ground it is hard for them to fly as they have weak legs to push or jump to create the force to take off. Unlike other birds which the legs are use to push them of the ground before they flap the wings.
So you see it is very important to understand how Swiftlet fly. By understanding this it would help you to build a good farm. Nevertheless there are other factors which influence this. I wonder how many books or is there any books ever talked about this? “NONE”.
Though generally most books advised that the DK size should be around 12x12ft and the Roving as well. This is a general guidelines ( 1+1 =2). It doesn’t mean you follow by the toe you would have a successful farm.
Some of the DK I designed are smaller than 12x12ft and there are plenty of birds flying in. It is all about the flying angle. Though the size helps, the size would reduce narrow angle but at the same time it defeated the DK purposes eventually birds play at the Roving and reluctant to venture to the nesting.
The height of the DK shouldn’t be too high. The higher the DK the narrower the angle for the birds to dive in and fly out. Young birds that just learned to fly couldn’t take such narrow angle would ended up dying therefore it is uncommon to see dead birds in farm.
Swiftlets have very good instinct (God created) furthermore coupled with their echolocation system they could somehow know the fly difficulty in the farm from outside. Once they sensed the difficulty they won’t want to fly in.
By understanding this I always use my imagination and instinct “of cause human instinct” to observe and contemplating on it and come out with the best possible design.
To add a like to this Swiftlet is a very unique bird (God created). Be kind hearted, generous, nice, no envy, definitely no bad mouth other and so on eventually your farm will have many nests.
Good Swiftlet Farming All! Best is to Teach And Share.
Yesterday I met up with a reader of mind to pass dozen of Love Potion to him. He has been using Love Potion for the past 6 months now and the numbers of nests shoot up like rocket from 300 plus as till now 700 plus. He asked my advise should he do force harvesting every month as his friends asked him to do so.
I explained to him the pros and cons of force harvesting……….and what he should do…..Not all force harvesting would bring good. Too often it would cause disaster.
Well in order to do force harvesting one must know and understand the natural behavior of Swiftlet.
The processes of making nests take place during night time by both female and male Swiftlets. During this time the (night) farm is in totally darkness and Swiftlets us echolocation to locate their roosting area, socialize and fly.
By understanding this, material that is soft that could absorb sound should not be used as wall or partitioning in farm because it absorb sound and doesn’t bounce it. Hard surface wall material in farm is important for echolocation which is the essence for birds navigationHow many of you have thought of this or knew this? Some even use plastic canvas as partition this kills the echolocation purpose.
The Nests making process takes about 45- 80 days. Several factors influence the length of this period the availability of food around, the non- breeding (season) period, etc.
During breeding season the Nests making process could exceed 75 days. During this period the nests built are bigger and fuller. They are intended to hold eggs and chicks. Not all swiftlets build nest for eggs laying purposes. Nests that are built outside this season normally smaller it is used for roosting purposes only.
If force harvesting (harvest every nests indiscriminately) is done during breeding season the swiftlets would immediately build new ones. Though initially you would see immediate increase in nests because almost every pair of birds would build twice for that short period but with prolong practice of such the birds’ population and the number nests would reduce. Swiftlet would migrate to other farms that are safe with fewer disturbances.
I strongly discourage force harvesting because I don’t believe in killing the chicks and throwing the eggs.
During mating season Switlets would look for partner this can be observed one chasing another in a circle motion and calling the clicking sound. Once a partner is found the swiftlet would find an appropriate place to make nests. They would look for farms that are safe and have good micro environment which consist of good Aroma, Internal sound, Rh, Temperature, good planks, etc. Bear in there so many farms to choose from so your farm has to stand out amongst all.
It is common that young male swiftlet from other farms that come and play at your farm and later enticed the female back to their farm and make nests. To prevent this make sure you farm has good Aroma and good hypnotizing internal sound.
The combination of Hypnotizing Internal sound and Aroma (Love potion) would hypnotize those male swiftlets that come to your farms. Instead the male swiftlets taking away the female birds they ended up staying in your farm.
Nowadays competition is stiff winner takes all loser left with nothing. Everyday there are hundreds of new farm coming up. (Of cause 90% not up standard). Then again somehow there would cause some impact to your existing farm too.
There are still many do not concern much about internal sound. They believe and solely relied on external sound only. As I had mentioned above birds stay and make nests during night time so “is internal sound and aroma inside the farm is important?” needless to say further you judge it yourself if you still don’t get what I mean then swiftlet farming is not for you.
After Swiftlets found their partners they will make nests together until the nests completed. The mating takes about 5-9 days thereafter the female would lay eggs. Commonly female lays 2 eggs. Incubation would be done by both birds.
It takes about 45- 50 days for the chick to grow and later fly. So all in it would take around 3-4 months or more to complete a cycle.
But yet I often receiving emails and calls from readers asking “James I built a 30 x 80 3 storey farm 1 month ago how come still got no nest?”
Well there is good and bad of knowing very little about harvesting and simply harvesting nests on the advice of friends who have little knowledge would cause reduction in birds population.. Look at the bright side what these people did is creating stress to their birds and on the other hand it create the opportunity for their birds to fly to our farms to stay.
Just got some new Hygrometers in today. All are made in Germany. They have been many complains about Hygrometers don’t work after few months placed in farms. Especially those made in China. I am not criticizing all China made goods. But those that are cheap which had not gone thru stringent QC normally wouldn’t last.
I personally had bad experiences with them before. They only last less than a year. After the batteries’ life ended so does the hygrometer.
Secondly I doubted the accuracy of the reading showed on the screen. There was an incident a Readers of mine spend thousands of ringgit trying to solve the temperature problems of his farm. After that he discovered that actually the fault was the hygrometer not his farm.
This article maybe good for those who want to know more about sound. With observation and good listening one would understand the sound of birds. This would help in Identifying good Swiftlet sound for Swiftlets farm. However it needs perseverance and many years of involvement and understanding of Swiftlet Sound.
Birders who listen carefully to the birds they observe will quickly learn that there are many different types of bird sounds that have different meanings and uses. Understanding these different sounds and being able to distinguish them is the first step in effective birding by ear and identifying birds based on sound.
Sounds Birds Make
Birds make a variety of calls, songs and nonverbal sounds with a language as complex as any spoken words.
·Alarm Calls: These sharp, piercing calls are used to warn other birds of danger, and birds will use them when they feel threatened. Alarm calls are typically short but loud and can carry over great distances. Alarm calls may also be used by aggressive birds to threaten others or while chasing other birds away.
·Begging Calls: Made by young birds, these plaintive calls are designed to draw attention and may include small peeps, whines and chirps. Begging calls are not usually loud, but can be heard clearly in the vicinity of a nest. Juvenile birds will continue to use these calls even after leaving the nest, and begging bird sounds are frequently accompanied by wing flutters and other motions.
·Contact Calls: When birds travel in flocks or when they want to signal one another, they use contact calls. These are moderately loud chirps, chips, buzzes and other simple bird sounds that are clear but not as piercing as alarm calls. Mates may use them to keep in touch with one another, or contact calls may be used to alert other birds to a good food source.
·Flight Calls: Many birds have specific calls they will give only in flight, and these can be some of the most useful bird sounds to learn for identifying birds. A flight call may sound similar to contact syllables or it may be slightly more musical, but in general they are used for birds to announce their presence to others while moving.
·Songs: Songs are the most distinctive and familiar bird sounds. These are longer, more elaborate and generally more musical strings of syllables that have many purposes. Birds may use songs to attract mates, to advertise their territory or to discourage intruders. The quality, duration and variation of bird songs depend on the species, and there are also geographic song variations in bird populations. Birds may also have different songs for different times of day, and some birds, such as the northernmockingbird, are excellent mimics of other bird species’ songs and unusual noises.
·Nonvocal Sounds: Many bird species incorporate nonverbal sounds into their language, some of which can function similarly to calls or songs. Drumming, wing beats, wing clapping and bill snaps are all part of birds’ nonverbal communication. Similarly, a bird’s feeding or mating behavior may produce additional sounds such as “booms” at the bottom of dives or scratching noises while foraging that can be useful in proper identification.
How to Use Bird Sounds
Birders who are familiar with the different sounds birds make can use those sounds for auditory identification. For example, the type of call may give birders a clue of what to look for – hearing an alarm call may prompt an observant birder to search for birds of prey nearby, while hearing a begging call may initiate a search for a well-hidden nest. When the bird is spotted, the noises it makes, including the pitch, tone, rhythm and quality of its sounds, can help create a positive identification of the species.
Birding by ear takes practice, but birders who understand the different types of bird sounds can use their ears as well as their eyes to find and identify birds in the field.
( This picture was taken after using Love potion in end Aug 2010. Which I had posted on the Blog before.

( Picture taken from same angle as picture above. The birds population and nests increased incredibly.)
Happy New year to all Readers and Friends. May all be well, happy, wealth and plenty of nests in farms.
In fact, today I have planned to celebrate New Year eve with my family. We would have a BBQ dinner and thereafter Birds’ Nests Soup to cool down the heaty food we eat.
Thought of not writing anything today because it was a public holiday declared by the government after Malaysian won the AFF football cup furthermore tomorrow is New Year.
But one email reached me this morning gave me some inspiration to show how important Aroma is to Swiftlet farms. (Make sure it is the correct aroma you are using).
Love Potion has been in the market for more than 2 years and used by thousand of farms all over South East Asia. It has been tested and used in New and Old farms with astonishing result.
The above pictures were sent to me by a user of Love Potion from Vietnam. In just couple of months nests and birds population had increased dramatically. Even the owner himself can’t believe.
If you want to boost up your birds population and Nest, Love Potion it is a must. In fact all farms should use Love Potion otherwise you can't complete with those that are using it.
So seeing is believing ha! …..so please see…
Enjoy the pictures…..Happy New Year!
