UNBELIEVABLE SWIFTLET FARM DESIGN

Hi Sifu James, how are you? I am Mr. L from Jerantut. Remember me? I spoke to you that day on the phone.

Oh .. Mr.L… the 2 storey Swiftlet farm that has 20 nests from Jerantut. OK …how could I help you?

James, I have just faxed the dimension of my Bh to you. Did you received it?

Let me check, and I will get back to you.

Before this Mr.L had invited  few peoples to revamp his Bh.., but the number of nests has not increased. He claimed that the micro is good, and all are under control. The light density and design are OK as his consultant claimed. But sadly there are only 20 nests after 3.5 years. Whereas some of his neighbors,  farms which started later are doing very much better than his.

I can’t make any judgment as I have not visited his Swiftlet farm. All I could sense was, there are problems which Mr.L and his Consultants unable to discover.

20 nests after 3.5 years in Jerantut is unacceptable. That area could easily do 50 nests in a year. Obviously it depends on how it is being setup.

James …did you get my fax? This Bh is built by a very well known consultant. I don’t see there is a problem with it. Furthermore, 2 experts from K.L had visited my Bh, and they did some revamp already.

Oh…I see..Mr. Lee…I got your fax, and I am looking at it now. Wow….that design look interesting. It looks like a maze. I wonder how Swiftlets  going to get to the last room.

James, don’t worry .. Currently  the 20 nests are located at room no.1… so maybe later they will build nests at the last room (2,3,4,5 & 6). My friends and many others asked me to wait. They said it is a matter of time.

Oh…..I see…so you wait lah. Since you had already waited 3.5 years I don’t see any reason why you can’t wait for another 3.5 years.

No..lah James…3.5 year is enough lah.. I hope you can help me because I kena scolding from my wife and my father in law already.

I though you said you Bh has got no problem?

Yes,  …no problem, but I don’t know why birds don’t  fly to the back of the farm.

Mr.Lee..as I had told you .. Your Bh is like a MAZE …. hard to go in and hard to get out..I wonder why these people designed it such way. I will look at your Bh design and make necessary corrections, and I will let you know once it's done. I have not visited your farm to observe it personally, but my feeling tells me that the Micros are all screwed up too…judging from the design itself. I will get back to you soon .. Please allow me a few day as you know I am busy.

Above is the fax from Mr.L .. The dimension of his 3.5 years Bh. Let’s not move to other things and just concentrate on the design itself. Did you all not noticed anything wrong with this design? Sometime big name of consultant doesn’t count..what matters most are the skill and talent one have.

I am not going to touch on other Micros as I have not visited this farm.  I shall elaborate on the dimension from the fax.. The design itself already tells why this Bh failed.

I will discuss  the design especially the partitioning. What is good for one particular Bh is not necessarily good or applicable to another. As I had mentioned before none one Bh is identical even both built side by side with the same design, same sound system, same building materials, etc.

As shown on the fax, a 2 storey 20x80 standalone. It adopted the ..I don’t  how to call it.......It seems to be the trend now adopting such design. A porch type where all sides are opened. So it is neither a Dog Kennel nor an Open roof. There are 2 entrances, both opening 1.5ft…. Way too small ....small entrance hole is adopted from the Indonesian Bh.

I guess this design was chosen because the designer cannot  decide between DG & OR.. Coffee or Tea...can’t decide so “Cham Loh”. In Swiftlet farming can’t simply mix.

Also, two entrance holes.... same  principles cannot  decide.. Not decisive enough so chosen  two openings. For a 20x80, 2 storey, 1 entrance hole is good enough. Since 2 entrance holes were built this has caused the roving to be too bright. To reduce this effect they opt for a small entrance hole which is 1.5x1.5ft. Too small of an entrance hole deter birds from flying in and stressed the adaptation  time much longer. So you could see from here an alteration of one thing effects and changes the other.

There  are 2 things I noticed here, either:

1) To reduce the light density more partitionings were erected. Therefore, this Bh has become a room type which has 6 nesting areas.

2) Or the designer just follows his previous design without even thinking about the cause and effect.(or not knowing at all)

With many rooms and small inter room holes it makes the back nesting areas too dark for birds to stay and build nests. This was mentioned and ascertained by Mr.L himself that most nests were located in area 1. But I guess he didn’t know why. Now he knows.

The design also restricts Swiftlet to fly freely. With so many rooms,  it is more like a  Maze, flying in and out is not easy. Those that could get in may not find it ways out.

Room type restricts the movement of air. On this particular farm,  I reckon that some rooms are hotter than the others. The partitions restrict air from exchanging. Bh needs some movement of air ..  controllable movement of air. Too much is not good, and too little birds hate it.

The design also restricts smooth flying. Swiftlet needs a certain degree of angle to maneuver freely. This design pushes birds to fly closer to the  walls restricted them from flying deeper into the Bh. I am not surprised that room 3,4,5 & 6 will not be inhibited by birds even in many years to come.

A 2 ft inter room holes making things worse. I don’t need to know the high. Two ft wide is good enough to kill the farm.

Personally I won’t opt for this “Cham” type design….either Dg or Or..I already make up my mind once I visited a particular area.

There are still many unknown things here.

I don’t know about the thickness of the wall. I don’t know what planking system he is using. I don’t know what type of tweeter and Amplifier  and the formation. I don’t know whose sound he is using. There are so many things unknown to me. All I have got is a piece of fax with the dimension of a Bh.

From the dimension,  it shows defected design.

Let’s not talk about the ground floor, the 1st floor already has so many problems.

The best is to visit this Bh in order to salvage it.

It is absolutely disastrous….. 20 nests in 3.5 years in Jerantut! Unbelievable.

閃電和短路問題在燕屋農場 Lightning and Short Circuit in Swiftlet Farm

你有沒有想過為什麼放大器只是操作了幾個月的時間之後就不能再操作了。你燕屋農場的高音喇叭經常損壞，並且沒有聲音。你已經請了電線員來檢查了連接，但是，一切似乎都是正常的。原因到底是什麼？

閃電是主要的原因，六角形高音喇叭是我們燕屋農場的最高點，如果燕屋農場是在平坦的土地這使事情更糟。閃電會擊最高的點。大多數的六角形高音喇叭都是有最好的良導體所製造的比如不銹鋼或鋼板，這使得吸引雷電變得更加完美。

一次被閃電擊中，它將把燕屋農場中大多數的電器都損壞。要避免這個問題，您可以使用 DIY類型的六角形高音喇叭，我在之前的文章中已經顯示如何製造。（整個六角形高音喇叭是塑膠材料的）。第二，對於那些使用不銹鋼類型的六角形高音揚聲器 （就如以上的照片） 最好就是改裝它們，安裝一種塑膠或橡膠材料在那個六角形高音喇叭，防止傳導他們。

我比較喜歡使用一個塑膠盤，而且這個東西可以很容易在家具用品找得到。選擇比較靈活的那些，它們往往會在炎熱的太陽下持續更長的時間。

我用螺絲把它鎖在六角形高音揚聲器的頂部，而且把螺絲用silicone或epoxy蓋上。

如果你有短路的問題，而且你不能解決這些問題，還有電線員也找不到任何故障，那麽你應該嘗試這個方法。我有很多燕屋主都有相同的問題，安裝了託盤在六角形高音喇叭之後，短路問題似乎解決了。

使用了不銹鋼材料來製成這個六角形高音的外套因爲它含有抗鏽品質，不過他們沒有注意到，或者不夠明銳來發覺到不銹鋼也是吸引閃電的良導體。

Lightning and Short Circuit in Swiftlet Farm

Have you ever wondered why the Amplifier is not functioning anymore after operated for just a couple of months. The tweeters in your farms often damage and have no sound. You had already asked the Wireman to check the connections, but everything seems right. So what are the causes?

Lightning is the main causes, the Hexagonal Tweeter is the highest point of our farms, making it worse if the farm is at a flat land. Lightning will strike the highest point. Most Hexagonal Tweeter casing is made of good conductor such as Stainless steel or Steel plate This makes it perfect of attracting lightning.

Once Lightning struck it will damage most electrical items in the farm. To avoid this, you could use the DIY type Hexagonal Tweeter which I have showed how to make in my previous article. (The whole Hexagon is of plastic material). Secondly for those who are  using the Stainless Steel type Hexagonal Tweeter ( like the above pictures) the best is to modify them by putting a plastic or rubber material onto of the Hexagonal to prevent conduction.

I would prefer to use a plastic tray that can be easily found in most home improvement outlets. Choose those that are flexible, they tend to last longer under the hot sun.

I mount them on top the Hexagonal Tweeters with screws and covered the screws with silicone or epoxy.

 If you have a short circuit problem, and you can’t solve them and the Wireman can’t find any fault  then you should try this. I have lots of farmers having the same problem,  after installing the tray on top of the Hexagonal tweeters the short circuit problem seems solved.

Stainless Steel materials were used to make the casing of the Hexagonal Tweeter because of  its anti- rust quality, but then again they didn’t notice, or sharp enough to realize that Stainless Steel is also a good conductor that attract lightning.

當谈到燕屋农的时候，我們要非常的小心。有很多的事情，或者我称它为"禁事"我們應該避免的事情...它是沒有回头的，一旦它被做了。有些是如此的嚴重它殺害了整個燕屋農場。燕子完全放棄該燕屋農場。一些要几年的时间才可以有幾只燕子回到那个燕窝。一些從未複和那个燕屋農場最終成為燕子的鬼屋。

我相信很多燕屋主其实都在做這些"禁事"甚至沒有意識到他們在殺害自己的燕屋農場。這就是没有养燕知識的結果。不能怪他們，我想如果他們知道他們在做什麼，他們就不會这样做了。

我的一个客戶抱怨他的燕屋農場位於彭亨州的表現欠佳。3層楼独立燕屋農場在一個種植園有大量的植物包围。它已運作超過一年的时间，現在僅有40个燕窝。他朋友的獨立燕屋農場比他的还迟却有200多個燕窝。

他告訴我，"James也許我沒有運氣...也許運氣還不來"。

我告訴他，養燕是沒有什么魔术的。我們做的所有事情不管是好或壞，最終將都顯示結果的。

我说他一定是做了什麼才可能會影響生長。他不同意我，他說： 那个獨立燕屋農場是一位眾所周知的顧問所建的。

似乎所有的燕子都住在二樓，没有燕子敢飛到低层。我沒有去过他的燕屋農場，所以我不能多發表評論，因為它會有偏見。

但是我知道有些事情有點不對勁。我問他，他是否有放東西在他的燕屋農場，任何掠食动物？此外...溫度和濕度又是如何?...等等...等等...等等...

和往常一樣所有的燕屋主都会回復"一切都很好"這個燕屋主也沒有例外。他給了同樣的答覆。對我來說，如果一切都很好那么他的燕屋農場將有幾百個燕窝就好象他朋友的燕屋農場一样。

我問他通風控制又如何？他回答說，在每層樓有2個巨大的排氣風扇。你知道這是用来幹嘛呢？他回答說要冷却燕屋農場。我說如果燕屋農場是正確地建立的，具有良好的放热性能和預計所有這些熱的问题......那就没有需要那么巨大的排氣風扇了？相信現在他應該知道我的意思了。

他給我看了一些他燕屋農場的照片......我不想多評論。我告訴他要等到我去了他的燕屋農場我才會作出評論。当他在手機上移动照片的时候，我叫他停止......"嘿，等等，您可以退回那張照片嗎?"

我看到照片上有好像有火在燕屋農場被照亮。它不是像一個打火機一样的小火。即使是打火机在燕屋農場里也会導致災難。

有人点燃了火在底层燒的東西。我問燕屋主他們要燒什么。最後他告訴我，他們用火燒小蜜蜂、 螞蟻、 蜘蛛等。他們定期这样做只要是看到有害蟲时。

哦我的天啊...他們怎麼能這樣做。他們不知道火和煙是燕子的第1号敵人。1997年印尼森林火災和煙霾造成燕子大量的遷移到馬來西亞。

動物对火是非常敏感的，甚至小火從打火機也將它們嚇跑。何况是这样来燒。燃烧的煙味将停留在燕屋農場很長的時間。想像一下火和煙味，這是一場真正的災難，而燕屋主說一切都很好。

有很多事情我們應該避免做的、 使用或放在我們的燕屋農場。僅舉幾个例了...千万不要使用滅蚊噴霧在燕屋農場，因为它含有“proletarian 和 d-phenothrin” 会攻擊所聯繫的神經。千万不要在燕屋農場里燃烧或吸烟......有許多案件为了要破壞其他燕屋農場，一些人在晚期把“甘文香”扔入环绕区。

燕子对气味是非常敏感的，因此，新建立的燕屋農場需要一段時間才能吸引燕子留下來，因為它們有一種強烈的水泥氣味。

在以上的案件中，燕屋主在自己的燕屋農場内起火......所以他还能指望什麼呢？我告訴他，已经很幸運有40个燕窝了。我想那些燕子會很快遷移，如果他不再做些什麼來糾正它。

在我这么多年的經驗，非常清楚，一旦燕屋主說："一切都很好"這是問題的開始。

我希望你們不会這樣做。燃燒是一件事......有數以百計的东西，你永遠不能想像到的那些燕屋主會對他們的燕屋農場做的，直到他們告訴你。

所以這是真正的無火不起煙的案件。

TRULY A NO FIRE NO SMOKE CASE

When it comes to Swiftlet farming we have to be very careful. There are lots of things or I call it “the Pantang things”  we should avoid from doing.. There is no turning back once it had been done. Some are so severe that it killed the whole farm.Birds totally abandon the farm. Some take years for  only a few birds to return to nest. Some never recuperated and the farm eventually becomes a ghost house of birds.

I believe many farmers are actually doing these “Pantang things “ without even realizing that they are killing their own farms. This is the result of poor knowledge in Swiftlet farming. Can’t blame them I guess if they know what they are doing  they wouldn’t have done it.

I customer of mine complained about the poor performance of his Swiftlet farm which located in Pahang. A 3 storey stand alone located in a plantation with plenty of vegetation. It has operated for more than a year now but only has 40 nests. His friend’s standalone built later not far away  has more than 200 nests.

He told me, “James maybe I have no luck..maybe luck has not come yet”.

I told him there is no magic in Swiflet farming. All the things we do will eventually show results either good or bad.

I told him there must be something you have done that might have affected the growth. He disagrees with me, he said the standalone was built by a well known consultant.

It seems all the birds stayed on the 2^nd floor and none even dare to fly to the ground floor. I haven’t visited his Swiftlet farm so I couldn’t comment much because it would be biased if I did so.

But I know something is not right. I asked him, did he put something in his farm, any predators? Also ….How are the temperature and humidity?…etc…blah..blah..

As usual all Swiftlet farmers would reply “all are fine”  no exception to this owner .He gave the same reply.To me, if all are fine his farm would have few hundred nests like his friend’s farm.

How is the ventilation control I asked? He replied,there are 2 huge exhaust fans on every floor .  Do you know what is that for? He replied to cool down the farm. I said if the farm is built properly with good insulation and had anticipated all these heat kinda things….. does ones still needs those huge exhaust fans? I guess by now he should have known what I mean.

He showed me some pictures of  his farm…I wouldn’t want to comment much. I told him to wait until I had visited the farm and I will comment. While scrolling the pictures on his phone I ask him to stop…”hey wait could you backspace that picture?”

I saw a picture of a fire being lighted up in the farm. It is not a small fire like  a cigarette lighter. Even  a cigarette lighter would cause disaster to a farm.

Someone had set up a fire on the ground floor to burn something. I asked the owner what were they burning. Lastly he told me they use fire to burn small bee, ants, spiders ,etc. They did it on a regular basis as long they see pests.

Oh no my god..how could they do this. Didn’t they know fire and smoke is the # 1 enemy of Swiftlet. Forest fire and haze in Indonesia in 1997 caused the big migration of Swiftlet to Malaysia.

Animals are very sensitive to fire even a small fire from a lighter would scare them away. What more burning it this way. The smell from the smoke will be in the farm for a long time. Imagine fire and smell, it is a real disaster and the owner said everything is fine.

There are many things we should avoid doing, using or putting in our farms. To name a few… never used mosquito spray in farms as its contain proletarian & d-phenothrin which attack the nerves of those contacted. Never burn or smoke in farm…there are many cases where people sabotaged other farms by throwing the “kemenyen” incense into the roving during night.

Swiftlets are very sensitive to smell therefore new erected Swiftlet farms take time to attract them to stay as they have a strong cement smell.

In the above case the owner set fire in his own farm…so what else could he expect? I told him he was damn lucky to have 40 nests. I expected the birds would migrate soon if he is not going to do something to rectify  it.

Throughout my many years of experience I knew very well, once the owner says “everything is fine” this is where the problem starts.

I hope you guys out there don’t do the  same. Burning is one thing…there are hundreds of things that you could never imagine those owners would do to their farm until they tell you.

So this is truly a case of No fire No Smoke.

Humidifier With Stainless Steel Sink is Back!

I have been looking for this type of humidifier for a while. Reason is, it comes with a Stainless Steel sink. It was on the market many years back until it disappeared when the plastic sink version came out. Manufactures opted for the plastic sink type because of cheaper production cost.

Where as for me I would go for the S. Steel one, simple reason, water stored in the S. Steel sink has lower temperature thus producing cooler mist. Secondly it has to be durable, as for this Humidifier it is made in Taiwan. As we all know Taiwan produces good and long lasting Humidifiers.

但是對我來說我會去選擇不銹鋼，一，原因很簡單，水存儲在不銹鋼槽中有較低的溫度，因而產生更冷的霧。第二，它會更加持久，至於它是台灣制造的噴霧器。我們都知道台灣產生良好和持久的噴霧器。
