Why Farms Fail

You may wonder why you had already done the best and yet Swiftlet still don’t make nests. Sometimes you may even consider giving up. While your friends farms started before yours now are harvesting many kgs yet your farm still struggling to reach 10 nests.

You may think that you have done the best but somehow your best to others is nothing but simple things like putting up boards to cover window, installing plank and play sound which are common to all farms.

.

There are many reasons why a farm fails. After visited so many farms majority of the failed farms are those that did not meet the common basic requirement of good Macro and Micro.

.

Some of them are:

1) The Location of the farm is located outside the habitat of swiftlets area which swiftlets seldom come to search for food. ( Not Prime Zone Area)

2) Poor condition of Micro, Temp, Rh, Aroma, etc

3) Wrong design of the farm and Poor design of the internal of the farm

4) Size of the Entrance Hole either too small or too big and placing them on the wrong side of the farm

5) Formation of nesting plank, too narrow or too wide between planks. Making perching and landing very hard on planks.

6) Using wrong material or wood for nesting planks.

7) Gap between nesting planks & ceiling which allow wind to blow thru.

8) Mold and fungus on planks. ( using wrong wood)

9) Termites and wood bugs on planks.

.

10) Leakage on building water sipping thur the floor or ceiling and damaged all planks.

.

11) Predators such as rats, cockroaches, owl, lizard, ants, etc.

.

12) Farm located in industry area that emitted gases.

.

13) Ground floors of farms are of car spraying, heavy machinery repairing, manufacturing, etc which created noises that frighten birds.

.

14) Poor selection of building material uses in constructing or renovating of farm. Some materials have smells that disliked by birds. I guess many didn’t know.

15) Positioning of the entrance hole.

.

16) Using wrong sound, internal for external and via versa.

17) Using wrong Amplifier (instrumental type as the Khz is different)

18) Poor quality of sound

19) Too many farms sharing the same sound.

最近我是非常繁忙的，並且我猜測这几年的时间我將会是这样的。 我參觀了許多燕屋農場和修造新的。 我想知道一个人怎麼可能每日更新他的部落格，因为早上我大概会在燕屋農場的屋頂。 然后，參觀失败的燕屋農場，再然后，回到K.L包裝由讀者定购的所有货品並且送出。

Sound Meter. What is the right DB?

Here is a gadget that is useful for those who want to know the volume or level of loudness of sound their farms generating from its external tweeters.

.

Even though most council guidelines are 40db for chirping sound from external tweeters but we all knew it is absolutely ridicules because 40db is equivalent to a normal sound level of 2 people talking softly. Coffee shop atmosphere would be easily 70-100db and above.

.

So if you don’t want to disturb your neighbors and to prevent the people from the council to check on your farm you better set your volume right. With the sound meter you would know the db reading.

.

Some may ask what the correct reading db for farm is. Well it depends if the sound quality of the external sound is crystal clear and sharp then you don’t need to set the volume very high as sharp sound could travel very far.

.

If the sound quality is poor then you may need to set the volume higher but higher volume would disturb others.

.

I don’t believe in sound war where everybody trying to outperformed each other by setting the volume as high as possible. For me the right volume of the external sound should be comfortable to our ears when we are in the roving area .If it’s create discomfort to our ears then it is too loud.

.

I always believe in quality, no point of setting the volume high where it can’t attract birds. The louder the better is a myth.

.

I often heard few farms in a same area using the same sound which the owners themselves didn’t notice. Some of these sounds are not cheap. This is the works of duplicate or copy and sells. In such situation which farms do the birds suppose to go? All are using the same sound whose farms to choose?

.

Birds will be flying to farm that plays different sound from those that sharing the same one. Birds will be attracted to sound that is not commonly played. This is the natural behavior of swiftlets therefore it is common to see hundred of birds come to play whenever a new sound is played.

I prefer using the crescent shape corner board than the 90dg type (the back portion which is 90dg). Reason being the crescent shape or I commonly calls it the moon shape is easier to work with and it has advantages over the 90dg cb.

.

If you use the 90dg corner board (cb) the wood works skill of the workers have to be good and precise. That means all 90dg angle on the planking must be accurate if any angle is not precisely 90dg then the 90dg cb wouldn’t fit properly because both angles have to be 90dg before it could fit in.

.

Otherwise there would be a big vertical line gap between the planks and the fixed 90dg cb and this is disliked by birds.

.

Whereas for the moon shape cb even the planking corners angles are not 90dg the moon shape cb can be easily move from left to right to find the right fitting angle. This would reduce the vertical line gap and making work easy.

.

Unlike the 90dg cb the back is a sharp 90dg angle and it hard to adjust them. Don’t take this likely as young birds like to make nests on the line between the planks and the cb. Most if not all the new nests in new farms are made on the corner board. Unless you do not favor cb and you intended not to fix cb in your farm then it would be a different case.

.

But if you intended to have cb in your farm then you should use the right one. It is not that the 90dg cb cannot be used but if you want to use it make sure the planking workmanship is good and make sure the workers have the skill in wood working otherwise if all the 90dg angle are out then you have problem of fixing the 90dg cb properly.

This would be useful for those who want to Diy the nesting plank. I had once Diy the nesting plank by myself before and I guess you could do it too.

Making a Good Swiftlets Farm

I have been very busy lately and I guess I will always be for many years to come. I have been visiting many farms and building new ones. I was wondering how one could up date his blog on a regular daily basis as in the morning I would probably be on top of a roof of a farm. And later visiting failed farms thereafter traveling back to K.L and pack all the stuffs which had been ordered by my readers and send them out.

Later in the night I might be having dinner and discussion with some readers. All these works are excluding my other businesses which I also have to attend to and also excluding the time I have to spend on my own swiftlet farms ….. Unless one might be dam free doing nothing or don’t own farms or successful farms other than just writing,

.

Anyway let’s go back to Swiftlet Farming. As I had always said building new farm is always easier than re-renovating them (revamp). You don’t have to worry about the nesting planks, the walls, etc like how one needs to consider in revamping a failed farm.

.

For new farm once the design has been decided those structures or walls that have no benefit to the farm has to go. All have to be hacked down. But most won’t do this as it involves cost. I see it differently because if you could spend 30k or more what is another few hundred Rm.

.

This is human nature Penny Wise Pound Foolish. Later to discover the walls or structure obstructed the birds and birds reluctant to stay and make nests which the damage is very much more costly. Perhaps they may not discover it at all.

The above pictures are from one of the farms that I am building currently planned to be completed before Chinese New Year.

As you could see all building materials are on the floor that included steel bars to reinforce the structure if any of the hacking may weaken the structure. I guess most contractors won’t reinforce the structure after they did the hacking. I have seen many farms the beams of the building being hacked down and left as it is. It is very dangerous it is a buying time situation. Some may say the building won’t collapse even if it did the chances maybe in 1 in 100k. Have you ever thought that the 1 in100k could be your farm? Reason being not to reinforce is to save cost, secondly the owner is of no knowledge of building stuff, thirdly even if it collapsed the contractors or the consultant will be nowhere to be found.

Swiftlet farming is a long term investment. That is why those who are successful in swiftlet farming would always say a successful farm could take care of your many generations to come. Many generations mean many years therefore your farm must withstand long time.

.

I always believe in doing the best or don’t do it at all. Swiftlet farming is certainly not a business where you could try out and see how. If you have the mentality of trying out first and see how later. Then birds might do the same as well, try out your farm first then leave and never make nests.

燕窝處理是否比燕屋農場更好操作呢？

現今越來越多的人们进入燕窝處理(燕窝清潔)原因是可以得到更好的利润。 这是对的對于那些已經有成功燕屋農場的人，每月有好收穫的燕屋農場。 他們可以處理他們自己的收穫和賣出，而不是賣未加工的燕窝给中間人。

但是，現在看起來多数进入燕窝處理的那些人是沒有擁有成功的燕屋農場和沒有經驗的人在處理。
簡單来说這群人是機會主義者。唯一的意圖是挣金錢。

這是一个经济市场有金錢的地方就有人民。 他們包括失败的燕屋主，機會主義者等等.....

我敢打賭他們已经做了他們的作業。 一个簡單的演算，如果他們開始投資燕屋農場它將是昂貴的和他們必須等待至少2-3年才看到回歸。 他們主要的意圖是的到获利而他們是沒有耐性和興趣等待的。

有這樣的意圖，如果他們是自己本身有燕屋農場的它將是一個失败的燕屋農場。

首先他們至少需要有一间商店或一间小的獨立燕屋農場。 那是至少几十萬的。 然后，将商店整修轉換成燕屋農場將花費另外三到六万，並且看看他們想要什麼在他們的燕屋農場。 然后等待几年的时间来的到回歸。 如果燕屋農場发生故障，整體的投資将玩蛋。

在這個简单的看法之外，我們必須看更深入的事情。 有許多專門研究燕窝處理而不成功的公司，賣可食的燕窝和出口在馬來西亞。

我想知道有多少人会注意到它。

Is Nest Processing better Than operating a Swiftlet Farm?

Nowadays more and more people are going into Nest processing (Nest cleaning) the reason being is to make better profit. Well that is true for those who already have successful farm s that constantly producing good harvesting monthly. They could process their own harvest and sell them instead of selling the raw nest to middle men.

But now it seems that those who don’t own successful farms and those who have no experience in Swiftlet farming are the majority that goes into Nest Processing.

.

Simple this group of people is opportunist. There are here to capitalist on the profit with one single intention that is to make money.

.

Well this is market economy where the money is where the people will be. They consist of owners of failed farms, opportunist, etc…..

.

I bet they had done their homework. A simple calculation if they were to start a farm it will be costly investment and they have to wait at least 2-3 years to see the returns. With their main intention of capitalizing on profit taking they don’t have the patient and interest to wait.

.

With such intention if they were to own farms often it will be a failed farm.

.

First they have to get a shop lot at least or a small Standalone. That would be at least few hundred thousand. Then the renovation of converted the shop would cost another thirty to sixty thousand depends on how and what they want in their farms. Later wait few years for the returns. In the event the farm failed the whole investment is gone.

.

So the safer side and the more secured one is to go into Nest processing. With ten of thousand they could buy many kgs of raw nest and process them. No matter how poor or how lousy their cleaning skill for every kg of nests they process they will sure make profit be it a profit of few hundred ringgit or as little as ten of ringgit it is still profit. These are the calculation and risk factor they had thought of. In the worst scenario if they are unable to sell their processed Nests they could always consume it themselves so it is a ‘Sure Win Situation”.

Compared to investing in a farm the risk and cost of investment are very much higher. So with the main intention of making quick profit this has transpired many to go into Nest processing. Before even get started this group of people already has a big vision some even had thought of how to market and export them to countries like China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc….

.

With the continuous huge demand from the above countries who doesn’t want to go into nest processing?

.

That is why now there are so many Nest processing seminars around. For a few hundred ringgit 1 day seminar thereafter one could make few thousand at least. Isn’t that a good bet?

.

Is that too good to be true……?

.

Well it beyond this simple way there are many things we have to look into. There are many unsuccessful companies that specialized in nest processing, selling of edible birds nest and exporting in Malaysia.

全部都是燕屋農場，没有一个是被放过的。

人们越來越多进入燕屋農場这一行。 看看在以上的照片，有从小的到超级大型的。 這些只是我有的一些照片。

因為我经常參觀因此我看到各種各樣的燕屋農場，我有時想知道燕屋主的腦子里想些什麼东西。 肯定一件事是他们全部都有一个共同的兴趣，就是从燕屋農場可以赚到很多的金錢。

他們有没有想到如果燕屋農場出了故障？ 他們有没有想到如果燕屋農場不為他們的投資得到好的回歸？

或者他們有没有想到他們修建的燕屋農場實際上不會吸引燕子。 因為在燕屋農場任何东西都是有可能发生的。

燕屋農場是不同其他的行业，它不想用金錢来刺激將维持您使做的更好的行业。

它是關於钟情和對燕子的愛，有了燕子然後金錢才会跟隨您。 但是多數是由金錢开始然後才到钟情或者根本沒有钟情。

它不是这样运作的。 也許有許多会不同意我的讲法，但是我是一個坚定钟情的信徒，钟情是第一的。 我開始的时候是對燕子的愛和未曾認為這个事務是賺錢的，最終得到好的回歸。

那些是为金錢而有動機的人將容易地放弃或设法丢掉如果他們看到他們的投資朝向無處。 他們將设法卖到他們的燕屋農場来停止血本无归。我看見了許多這样的案件。

其中一件案件是在S.P。 燕屋農場被管理了4年，它只有50个窝。 燕屋主告訴了我他想要卖掉，因為他不看回歸。 他要求我帮助他賣他的燕屋農場。 因此我去參觀那燕屋農場来看清楚。

燕屋農場由他本身建造的，一间很差的燕屋農場…我肯定為他這樣標準的燕屋農場是很幸运在4年里有50个窝的。 我勸告他修補他的燕屋農場，因为我看見他的燕屋農場是非常有潜质的，如果將它改變整體設計。 當然它需要有拆除的一些，並且它將需要花費。

但是他回復了「我不會想要再進一步的投資，當我看见4年里沒有回歸时，斩货像股市一样。 無論如何我在這裡是為了金錢，如果4年后还是沒有金錢的回歸，為什麼我还需要再投資更多的金錢呢？」

那是他的願望。 我找到了一個買家他是我的朋友。 當然交易成功，而且是一個非常好的價格。 在他買之後，我帮我的朋友做了修補。我的朋友也是在燕屋農場相當博學的處理的很好的燕屋農場。

自今天在1年半的时间之后，接管一个失败的燕屋農場以後燕窝的計數是650个窝。

因此，您看看，涉及燕屋農場是为了钟情和涉及燕屋農場是为金錢之间的區別。

也許有許多不同意我的讲法，但是那是我的立場，並且为了这个我今天每個月都有非常，非常 好的收穫。大家有好燕屋!

Money Motivated or For Passion? Which is more Important?

All are farms not even one is spared.

More and more people are going into Swiftlet farming. Look at the pictures above it comes in all sizes from small to Mega huge. These are only few pictures of hundred I have.

As I travel I had seen all sorts of farms, sometimes I was wondering what all these owners have in their mind. For sure one thing they all have in common is to make money from Swiflet farming being influenced and motivated by the good returns which they heard.

.

Have they ever thought what if they fail? Have they ever thought what if their investments would not yield good returns?

.

Or have they ever thought that the farms they build actually will not attract birds. It could be anything because in Swiftlet farming anything is possible.

.

Swiftlet farming is unlike other trades which monetary motivation would keep you going and thus helps one to do better in the trade.

.

It is all about passion and the love for Swiftlets “The Birds First” then money will follows. But most would be motivated by money first then later passion or perhaps none at all.

.

It doesn’t work that way. There might be many disagree with me but I am a strong believer that passion is above all. I started off with the Love for Swiftlet and never thought of the lucrative side of this business then eventually the good returns came.

.

Those who are monetary motivated will give up easily or try to cut loses if they see their investments heading nowhere. They would try to dispose off their farms by selling it away to cut loses. I have seen many of such cases.

.

One of those cases was in S.P. A farm has been operated for 4 years and it has only 50 nests. The owner told me that he wants to dispose it off as he sees no returns. He asked me to help him to sell his farm for him. So I went and visit the farm to have a clear picture of it.

.

The farm was badly built by him…I am sure for such standard he was lucky to have 50 nests in 4 years. I advised him to revamp his farm as I see his farm is very potential if the whole design is to be changed. Of course there will be some hacking and there shall be cost involved.

.

But he reluctant to do so as he replied “I won’t want to invest further as I see 4 years no returns that’s about it, cut lost like stock market. Anyway I am here for the money if no money in 4 years then why should I dump in more money?”

.

That was his wish. I found a buyer who is also a friend of mine for him. The deal got thru of course at a very good price. I did the revamp for my friend after he had bought it. My friend who is also quite knowledgeable in Swiftlet farming manages the farm well.

.

As of today exactly 1 and a half year after taking over the failed farm the nest count is 650 nests.

.

So you see the differences between getting involved for the love of Swiftlet farming and getting involved because of money motivated.

.

Many may not agree with me but that is my stand and that has made what I am today having very..Very.. Good harvest every month.
