我越南的燕屋农场讲座会 (HCMC)

这次到越南是一个愉快的旅程。在这里我要感謝從越南的代理、 朋友和讀者，他们使我留下了一個令人難忘的逗留。這是一個很繁忙的旅程，但是他們熱烈的歡迎和他們對學習的熱情使我忙碌和累人的行程，变成一個令我愉快的。

如果我的預測是對的，越南将有可能成为取代目前正在生產可食燕窝的所有其他國家，在最近的未来成为這地區最大的可食燕窝生产国。



由于它的地理區域，它的自然環境與許多河流、 三角洲和平坦的土地，無疑越南是東南亞地區做燕窩養殖的最佳地方之一。

越南現在最需要的就是有好的燕窩養殖技能。這裡的燕屋农场都不是做的很对的，由於对一個好的燕屋农场的構建和設計缺乏瞭解。在我的讲座時提出的問題表示那裡的燕屋主仍有需要學習很多東西。參加我的讲座大部分的人都不是新手，他們都是燕屋主和一些甚至是先驅者。他们都是Love Potion的长期用户。他們想要改善他们的燕屋农场到一个更高的程度。

他们仍然有很多东西需要學習。我希望我能帮到他們，和教导他們正確的方法来做燕屋农场。



那个講座是在一個美麗的地方舉行的，在胡志明市有良好的綠色環境，那就是越南所拥有美丽的园林，也是燕屋农场理想的地方。我沒想到這麼多人將出席這個講座，直到我到達那个會場，因為这次的讲座都是由我的代理人所安排的。



这个讲座是关于"如何有效地使用Love Potion和燕子的声音"最終却谈到更多的主題，從設計到內部的环境控制，而我是非常確信所有出席讲座的人都带着一個燦爛的笑容回家。

我顯示了如何有效的使用Love Potion尤其是使用的技術，並解釋在燕屋农场里什么是可以使用，什麼是不可以使用。过了好幾個小時，直到我不得不停下來，慢下來，因为我要让我的翻譯趕的上。



問答會話更是一個有趣的，许多的問題都是寫在紙上，而且还是很多很多的堆上來。他們知道我不明白越南语，所以所有的問題都是寫在纸上。直到我必須限制提上來的問題为止，因為我們沒有太多的時間。我向所有出席讲座會的人在此道歉，我已經答應了他們，我不久會再回來的，繼續连接我们没谈完的地方。



這个講座會的反應是非常的熱烈，他們要我再囘來。一位出席者對我說，"James 我花了這麼多的錢到处到国外的研討會去学习，但是學會的却那麼少。您今天所教導的却是無價的，我們學会了很多"。



我告訴他們下一次的讲座會是更多关于燕屋农场技術的方面。它將涵蓋從 A 到 Z。我們將会谈到燕子需要多少度的迴旋前才可以进入燕屋农场。這將有助所有出席者理解它的飛行路徑，反過來説可以帮助他們設計更好的燕屋农场。

My Swiftlet Farming Talk in Vietnam (HCMC)

It was a good trip to Vietnam. I would like to thank my agent, friends and readers from Vietnam for making my stay a memorable one. It was a hectic trip but their warm welcome and their eagerness to learn had turned my hectic tiring trip into an enjoyable one.

If my prediction is right Vietnam could potentially replace all other countries currently producing Edible Birds Nests to be the largest in this region in near future.

Given the geographical area it located, its natural environment with many rivers, deltas and flat lands, no doubt Vietnam is one of the best places in South East Asia to do Swiftlet farming.

What Vietnam needs now is a good Swiftlet farming Skill to make it works. Many Bhs here are not properly made due to the lack of understanding on how to build and design a good Swiftlet farm. The questions asked during my talk indicated that there are still many things the Bh owners there needs to learn. Most who had attended my talks are not new comers, they’re owners of swiftlet farms and some are pioneers. There are the regular users of Love Potion. They want to improve their Bhs to a greater height.

There are still lots to be learned. I hope I could assist them and teach them the right way to do Swiftlet farming.

The talk was held at a beautiful place in Ho Chi Minh City with good green environment that is what Vietnam landscaping is ideal for swiftlet farming. I didn’t expect so many people would attend this talk until I arrived at the venue because my agent is the one who arranged it.

The talk on “How to Use Love Potion Effectively and Swiftlet Sound” eventually went into more topics from Bh design to internal micro control which I am very sure all attendees went back with a big smile on their faces.

I demonstrated how to use Love Potion especially the technique of using and explained what could be use in Bh and what can’t be used.  This goes on for hours until I have to stop and slow down for my translator to catch up on the translation.

The Q & A session was an interesting one, many questions written on paper came in stacks. They knew I don’t understand Vietnamese so all questions were written on papers. At one point I have to limit the question because we were running out of time. My apology to all attendees for this, I had promised them that  I will come back again soon to continue where and what we had left behind.

It was an overwhelming response and they wanted me to come again. One attendee told me “James I had spent so much money traveling to oversee for seminars but learned so little.  What you have taught us today is invaluable and we learn so much”.

I told them the next time it would be more on technical aspect of Swiftlet farming. It would cover from A to Z .We will go into how many degree a swiftlet needs to take to maneuver before entering the Bh. This would help all attendees to understand the flying path which in turn helps them to design a good Swiftlet farm.

為什麼我在燕屋农场的地板上發現了燕子蛋？)

我發現在這样的情况下它可以減少燕子之中的恐慌。 當然一些人在燕屋农场里只是依靠頂頭灯和电筒来做收穫或修理工作。最重要的是，不管您更喜歡任何方式您确定您不会使燕子有恐慌，特别是那些正在孵蛋的燕子。

Why I Found Swiftlet Eggs On Bh's Floor?

Egg drop on floor is common. Don’t be surprised when you find eggs on your Bh' floor. It is a natural occurrence. It is common to see 10%-20% of eggs dropped from nests in all Bhs.  The main causes include accidental ejection by the adult (cause by panic), narrow and shallow nests, etc.

Incubating Swiftlets normally sit facing the planks or wall with tail and wings projected over the edge of the nest. When there is predator or there is a shock that create panic they leap off the nest to make a sideway turn. The powerful flip of the wings create strong lift, this is where the eggs are tossed out from the nest.  The egg is incubated between the adult legs. The panic flight which cause the egg caught between the feet, a sudden powerful lift and turn sideways would easily toss eggs out from the nests.

Shallow and small nest has higher chances of loosing egg compared to a deeper rounded nest. From here we could clearly understand why birds prefer to make nest at 90dg corner of the plank.

Corner nest is deeper, because of its deepness it is rare to have egg tossed out. You can check and observe it yourself. Therefore many old timers (old sifu) discourage the use of corner board. They knew this would help to increase the population fast especially for new Bh but they didn’t know the reason behind it. It needs observation and research to discover this.

What causes the panic flight? Predators such as Owl, Rats, Geckos and without forgetting the way we enter the Bh(ourselves to be blamed) caused the panic flight.

If you find many eggs on the floor of the Bh more than normal you should check and find out, it could be predators. They could have entered the Bh. Check for sign of predators.

Secondly the ways we enter the Bh, I am sure different people or Sifu have different ways of doing things. Some say switch off the sound completely, some say it is OK to switch on the light, some say don’t switch off the sound and so on. So who is right and who is wrong? Well it is up to you to decide who you want to follow.

As for me I stick to common sense and what nature and the birds wanted. In order not to create a shock which mean a sudden appearance in a dark environment I would first stop the external sound. (I wouldn’t want to attract birds to fly into the Bh while I am inside). After 15 minute I reduce the volume of internal sound to 10% (minus 90%). This is to inform those birds and chicks inside there are still many friends flying around. I wait for another 15 minute then I would enter the Bh with a flash light. I prefer using warm light to reduce young birds in the Bh flying towards the flash light (White day light attract more birds). After moving around the Bh for a while by this time most of the birds would have fly out from the Bh then I would switch on the florescent lights in the Bh to do my work.

I discovered by this way it would reduce panic among birds. Of course some would do harvesting or repair works in Bh entirely relied on head light and flash light. Most importantly whatever ways you prefer make sure you don’t make the birds panic especially those that are sitting on the eggs.

最近許多燕屋主抱怨看到较少的燕子在他們的燕屋農場，燕窩變得更小，缓慢的增量等等。


有些讀者給我發了電子郵件，並且一些甚至打了電話給我想要知道发生了什么。

我告訴他們沒有什麼好擔心的，前2年是好的因爲它幾乎每天都下雨。 有大量的燕子在天空到處都是。 燕窩的品质蠻优良和形狀也良好的。 當然我們不可能期待每一年都是同样的，因爲這是大自然，我們是無法控制的。 实际上，我當作這為一個好的機會。 這是試驗的时期。 測試以下我們建立的燕屋農場有多好。

热季來臨了，並且氣象局盼望它繼續延遲到9月份。 從現在起是5個月的時間。 您的燕屋農場是否能夠承受這個？

隨便被建立，完全沒有瞭解热度控制、透氣和防熱材料的燕屋農場將被這個热季第一個影响的。

热季可以導致燕子遷移。 遷移有2個类型。

1) 從一個燕屋農場到另外一個燕屋農場。

a) 上升的內部溫度導致熱氣擊穿通过牆壁、天花板等等。

b) 從屋外的热空气(36-38度) 流通到燕屋農場里。

c) 由於A 和 B的原因，濕度將嚴重地降落。

d) 燕子的唾液容易地乾掉，使它們更加难修造燕窩。

e) 幼燕子可能無法生存由于高的內部溫度。


2) 從一個區域到另外一個區域

a) 在這個期間有较少的食物(昆蟲)。

b) 燕子必須冒險到有下雨的區域。

c) 生理上，它們將延遲他們的繁殖期間，可能性的減少生育。

d) 需要更長的时间來扶养幼小的燕子。


如果你燕屋農場的情况类似 第1 ：燕子們將從您的燕屋農場移居到有更好溫度控制，和有更好屋内控制的鄰居燕屋農場。 您會看到越來越少的燕子和更缓慢的燕窩成長。而您的鄰居燕屋農場將看到更好的結果，還有燕窩適度的增加。

如果整個地区都是受到热季的影响 (第2 ：) 燕子們將移居到更加涼快和有下雨的區域。 在這個區域的燕屋農場將看見減少的燕子和燕窩。 那些沒有被適當做的燕屋農場將第一個受到影響的。 一般上，如果這樣的情况延長和变的更坏，所有的燕屋農場在同一個區域將受到影響，但是，那些被修造的很差的燕屋農場，在燕子群和燕窩的數量上的变化和那些有好内部控制的燕屋農場更大。

您可以做些什麼來減少热季的作用？

1) 增加燕屋農場的濕度 (增加使用潤濕器、噴水隆頭等等) 。

2) 放水桶在燕屋農場 。

3) 弄濕燕屋農場的地板

4) 控制通风孔(太多的通風孔將把外部的热气 (37度) 帶入燕屋農場。 太少會把薄霧变成熱的蒸汽。

5) 增加防熱材料在牆壁(外面)和天花板上。

希望上述可以幫助到大家。

Heat Wave - Less Swiftlet

Lately many Bh owners are complaining about seeing less birds in their Bhs, nests are getting smaller, slow increase of nests and so on.

Some readers had emailed me and some had called me personnel wanting to know what had happened.

I told them there is nothing to be worried, the previous 2 years was good it rains almost every day. There were plenty of birds everywhere in the sky. The nests were in good quality and good shape. Of course we can’t expect every year the same as this is nature which we have no control of. In fact I look at it as a good opportunity. This is the time of test. Testing how good we have built our Bh.

The Heat Wave is here and the Meteorological Department expected it to continue till September. That is 5 months from now. Could your Bhs withstand it?

Bhs that are simple built without understanding heat control, ventilation and insulation properties are the first to be affected by this Heat Wave.

Heat Wave causes migration of Swiftlet. There are 2 types of migration.

1) From Bhs to Bhs.

a) Rising internal temperature cause by heat penetrating thru walls, ceiling, etc.

b) Movement of hot air from outside (36-38C) into the Bhs 

c) Because of A &B factors the RH would drop tremendously.

d) Saliva of birds easily dried up making it hard for them to build nests.

e) Young birds may not survive due to the high internal temperature.

2) From Areas to Areas

a) Less food (insects & flies) during this period.

b) Birds have to venture to areas that have rain.

c) Biologically they would delay their breeding period, Possibility of reducing in brooding.

d) Take longer time to raise young chicks..

If yours Bhs condition is similar to No: 1 then swiftlets from your Bh would migrate to your neighbor’s Bhs that have lower temperature with better micro control. You would see less and less birds and slow growth in nests. While your neighbor’ Bhs would see better result with moderate increase in nests.

If the whole geographical area is affected by the Heat Wave (No: 2) birds would migrate to areas that are cooler with rain. Bhs in such area would see nests and birds population reduced. Those Bhs that are not done properly would be the first to be affected. In general if such condition prolonged and become worse all Bhs at the same area would be affected, but the changes in birds’ population and number of nests of those poorly built Bhs would be greater than those Bhs that have good internal control.

What can you do to reduce Heat Wave effects?

1) Increase RH in Bhs (increase the use of Humidifiers, water sprinkler, etc)

2) Put water in bucket in Bh

3) Wet the floor of the Bh

4) Control Ventilation Holes (Too many Vent-Holes would bring outside hot air (37C) into the Bh. Too few would turn the mist into hot steam.

5) Add insulation materials on wall (outside) and ceiling that are hot.

KUALA LUMPUR - The current heat wave and dry weather enveloping many parts of the country is expected to continue at least until September.The Malaysian Meteorological Department forecasting director Saw Bun Liong said the nation was experiencing a combination of weather factors that had led to the current hot weather.

He said the annual southwest monsoon usually caused hot and dry weather but the arrival of tropical storm Aere in the Philippines and the low pressure system in the Indian Ocean were contributing to higher temperatures.

Although the heat wave may continue, Saw said the worst might be over as Aere was now moving north.

Temperatures this month reached a high of 36.2ºC last Friday, recorded in Subang while the temperature here reached 36ºC yesterday.

The hottest day in the nation was recorded on May 18, 1998, when temperatures reached 38.9ºC in Chuping, Perlis and 38ºC in Malacca.

"We will still see lower levels of rain and more dry spells in the months ahead due to the southwest monsoon season which is expected to last until September," he told the New Straits Times yesterday.

During this season, northern peninsular states, Sabah and parts of Sarawak are expected to see lower rainfall in the next two months.

In June, Limbang and Miri are expected to see between 20 and 40 per cent below average rainfall, while slightly below average rainfall is also expected in Labuan, West Coast and the interior divisions in Sabah.

Normal rainfall is expected to resume in all states in September.

Deputy director-general of health Dr Lokman Hakim Sulaiman said the hot weather could cause serious problems like heat stroke, which can be fatal.

He said people most at risk were those above 40 years old as they were 10 times more at risk than younger people.

He added that children below five years were also at greater risk, as with those suffering from breathing and heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes and thyroid problems.

Dr Lokman also discouraged wearing tight and thick clothing as it prevented heat from escaping through evaporation .

He said people should be on the lookout for heat exhaustion symptoms like headaches, lethargy, poor concentration, dizziness, cramps and nausea.

"It's serious as the heat can cause dehydration, confusion and coma."

He advised people to drink plenty of water, including isotonic drinks, stay indoors, limit outdoor activities, have frequent rests, bathe or use fans to cool down, use light, loose and bright clothing and to use hats or umbrellas outdoors.

Dr Lokman also advised against consuming sweet drinks and also those with caffeine and alcohol.

He also cautioned parents on leaving children in cars with closed windows and exercising in hot weather.

Those with severe heat exhaustion should also seek immediate medical treatment at the nearest clinic or hospital.

一個老朋友告訴我他如何在一個星期内抓捕3頭貓頭鷹。 (我有我自己除掉貓頭鷹的方式，但是您不會想知道的)。 它是有点殘酷的。 它是一件不好的事，但是您必須這個做否者您所有的燕子將跑掉。

差不多4個月了都沒有燕窩增量在他的燕屋農場。 他檢查了所有的屋内環境等等並且找不到差錯。 他在燕屋農場的入口從晚上7點等到9點，等了整整一個星期，但是沒有看到掠食性動物的影蹤。

那到底出了什么问题?

他曾经是一個熱中的漁夫，喜歡釣魚也是他許多愛好之一。 他曾经到過亞洲各地的許多渔村來旅行釣魚。 有时在那裏過了幾個星期的時間。 他告訴我他在遼囯的魚村，在看了漁民如何在水流很急的瀑布捉魚之後得到了這個想法。

You Decide Which To Use?

An old friend told me how he captured 3 Owls in a week. (I had my own way of getting rid of the Owls, but you wouldn’t want to know). It is a bit cruel. It is a bad thing to do but somehow you have to do it or else all your Swiftlet will be gone.

There was no nest increases in his Bh for almost 4 months. He had checked all the micros, etc and found no fault. He waited at his Bh entrance from 7 -9 pm for a week but see no sign of Predators.

So what could be the problem?

He was an avid fisherman who used to do lots of fishing which is one of his many hobbies. He used to travel to many fishing villages all over Asia to fish. Sometimes spending weeks there. He told me he got this idea from a village of Laos after seeing how the villagers there catch fishes at the rapid water fall.

I asked him wouldn’t this would also affect or injure those Swiftlets. (Some of the swiftlet may get hooked). He explained, he only put the Hook Traps there for a short period. Once the Owls are gone he would remove the hook traps. He said so far there were no swiftlet feathers on the floor of the trap neither on those hooks. There were no dead birds around the floor of the entrance hole too. This indicated the Birds are smart enough to avoid the Hook Traps.

But somehow I still believe it would affect the birds. If given the situation of “Owl invasion versus the Hook Traps injury to Swiftlets”. The Owls invasion would do greater damage to the Bh. Furthermore The Hook Traps is not for permanent use. He installed the traps for 2 weeks to a month until the colony of the Owls that invaded the Bh is captured. After that it will be removed.

I asked him again, in the event if an Owl is hooked as it won’t die instantly it would still flap its wings and struggle to fly to escape this might take days before it dies from dehydration. . Wouldn’t this would affect or scare away those swiftlets in the Bh those that try to fly in.

He said if you want to put the Hook Traps you have to visit your Bh often. In his case he visits his Bh every other days because his Bh is located not far from his house, a short 30 minute drive. He also has a neighbor next to his Bh, they will inform him when there is something at the entrance hole.(His Bh is a Dog Kennel type)

He said all Owls were caught in the 1st weeks. Thereafter the 2^nd and 3 rd weeks there were none. He removed the Traps on the 3^rd weeks. Ever since 3 Owls were caught now his Bh is back to normal with nests increase every month.

I asked him, didn’t the CCTV capture those Owls that fly into your Bh before the Hook Traps were installed.

He replied, I have replayed and viewed all the records of the CCTV there was nothing there. It never came to my mine that there was Owl problem in my Bh until all 3 were captured.

Well for those who have Owl problem may try to use the Hook traps. For me I still believe it would affect the birds. Then again Owl VS Hook Traps …HooK Traps win.

(Note: Use clear fishing line of 40 pound or more. Good Branded fishing hooks as they are sharper and stronger.)

I have not tested the Hook Traps yet.You guys out there may try it out and give me some feedback.
