A research has been done to collect data pertaining to the effectiveness of the New 3rd Generation Love Potion to retain young birds to stay and to build nests.
We understand that the future of a Swiftlet farm relies on its ability to retain and attract its young birds to stay and to build nests. Do you know that more than 50% of the offspring do not return to their birth place to build nests.
If all birds (100%) returned to their birth places to build nests, then we won't have a problem of stagnation.
The stagnated growth and the number of nests remained the same over a few years clearly indicates this. More than 80% of Swiftlet farm is having the stagnated growth problem. So how do we solve it?
I have come across many farmers complaining, after the 2nd and 3rd years in operation often the number of nests never increased. It stood still and remains there. The number of nests ceased to increase. It remains as it is 200 nests, 350 nests or at 400 nests and so on and it stood there for many years.
A simple calculation would be, if a farm has 300 nests at the beginning of the year with 2 seasons (Min) of 2 broods and presuming 80% survived then the farm would have 1080 birds ( 300x2x2). If 1080 birds paired together and in a year plus it would make 540 nests. We haven't included birds from other farms that came and stay. Also birds from this farm paired with other birds and stay at this farm. Even if we discounted another 30% from the 540 nests, say the 30% died due to disease, injury or predator we still have 378 nests.
So a farm in year 2 with 300 nests should have multiplied. Even if it didn't increase in year 3 but it should have increased in year 4 and year 5. So it should be 300 nests plus 378 nests in year 4 (total 678 nests) and plus 378 nests in year 5 (total 1056 nests). We are using the lowest assumption where the two years " 4th and 5th year" the increase remains at 378 per years. It could be more. So this farm should have at least 1056 nests in year 5. But that is not the case. Most farms remained as it is 200, 300, 500,1000, etc, for many years. What happens to all the offspring?
I am sure when you do harvesting every time you would see some chicks or eggs in the nests. Where did all these chicks go after they have grown up? Isn't it weird?
The answer is.......they have found a new home and they have fled to other farms.
So the ability to retain offspring to stay is utmost important. Does your Swiftlet farm have this ability? Ask yourself. Has the nests growth stagnated? As I had said nobody knows your farm as much as you do.
Our research results are shown in the below pictures.
The first week after a Dripper with Love potion is placed at this area. An area specially selected away from the large patch of bird shit. After a week white bird shits are spotted below the Dripper. Many white bird shits indicate that young birds had stayed.
Second week feathers were seen on the floor around the white bird shits. This indicates they are soon going to build nests right above the Dripper.
Week 3, more feathers and white bird shits. Nest markings can be seen on the planks now.
Feathers can be seen on this dried shits, which left by the birds. The birds had built nests on the planks above and left. They never came back for many months. Now with many feathers on the shits this indicates new birds had taken up the place to build nests.
Good Swiftlet Farming all!
