The Standalone Craze

(Adaptation from Indonesia Style. The Entrance Hole barely 1x1ft. The owner must have forgotten that he is building a farm in Malaysia)

( Look more like "Lego".Having built so many farms in 1 area so they have to paint their farms in different colors so that birds would not enter the wrong farm.)

( Cost about 2m to build 2 years ago. Somewhat not promising)

( more blocks are coming up to joint the crowd. It is not so much about how many nests in your farm. It is a trend of, if you have a standalone so do I. "everybody wants to own a standalone failure or success doesn't matter")

These are the pictures taken during my trip to the East Coast. I good friend of mine showed me how people in the East coast doing Standalone farm in big scale.

In fact it‘s not new. Some of these farms have being there for more than 2 years and the results somewhat not promising.

Some of these building are 5 storey and taking space of 100 ft long or more. The owner must have planned for next 20-40 years. I wonder has he got the chance to see what in the future.

Some coming in massively with huge investment but sad to say so money can’t help when it comes to swiftlet farming. Because Swiftlets don’t recognize money all they wanted is a good conducive environment that they could stay and build nests.

Some of these farms are owned by some well known figure in Malaysia.

So ?......So what !

Does It make Sense?

Does it make sense? Paying few hundred thousand Ringgit the only advantage is you can blast your Tweeters sound as loud as you like and no one cares. Other than that you gain nothing.

This is what you would get if you buy a property in a secluded area specially built for such purposes. Other than that you don’t get anything at all. Bear in mind the ground floor cannot be and will never be rented out as the location of the properties are at the secluded area.

Furthermore it is not for the purposes of business and commercialization other than for swiftlets to stay and make nests. What if in the even Swiftlets don’t stay and make nests in the unit you have bought…….?? Have you ever thought of that? I guess not!

If fact it is the trend now, developers are jumping in to the band wagon taking this opportunity and make as much money as they could. Can’t blame them they are all entrepreneurs who see this lucrative returns on the advantages of those ignorant newbie investors.

How these opportunities arise? Firstly it was due to enforcement that has been talked about since if I could remember when swiftlets farming existed (it never materialized anyway).

As usual fear is the best factor that triggers purchase just like Insurance. That is why most if not all Insurance companies are making tons of money. Entrepreneurs knew this very well therefore they are targeting this group of newbies or semi-newbies by providing security and licensing as a whole package.

Secondly, it is due to greed where on papers the developers promise certain returns and guarantee certain things. All projected nicely on papers for the next 5 years and so on in a conference room with Air-conditioner, drinks free flow, lunch and gifts. In reality it may not work this way.

Like I had always said successful farmers have very big baxxx they have no fear of what comes next as long it doesn’t cause harm to others therefore to them enforcement thingy comes secondary. Successful farmers would never go and buy shoplot unit or semi-Ds or Bungalow types of farms located in a secluded area which built by these entrepreneurs if they want they build it themselves.

Successful & experienced farmers knew very well in any situation there will never be all farms located in a same area would share the same success. This is the fact of any businesses, 10% of the people make 90% of the money and the 90% share the rest of the 10%. Swiftlet farming is not exempted from such theory therefore 80-90% failed.

Go to any places like Setiawan, Krai, Pekan, T. Intan,Segamat, you name it any town famous for swiftlet farming if you know the local community there who are into Swiftlet farming they will tell you not all the farms in the town are successful. Perhaps only few farms from the whole roll of shops converted into swiftlets farm made it the rest still struggling.

By understanding such theory therefore the local would never buy all these building built by these entrepreneurs who capitalize on the fear factor and the ignorance’s of those invested.

I could say 100% of those who purchased such building are not local. There are from out station like K.L , JB, and so on. The local won’t be stupid enough to buy it because they knew what is going to happen next.

Outsiders especially newbies who have not seen birds before, the moment you take them tour to places like the above their eyes would pop out and wanting to own a farm around those areas.

With such trend going on it is not surprised the price of builing in a secluded area of nowhere would be more expensive than one in the Klang valley.

Because of the demand for such building for swiftlet farming this has pushed the price of building and lands.

The trend of building farms for those who are fear of the enforcement would continue and I am sure there will be many entrepreneurs taking this opportunity to build such building and parks.

Why Standalone Farm is Harder?

The owner wants it cheapest as possible like squeezing an orange for its every drop. The contractor wants to save cost as much as possible so that he could make profit. For the contractor the least material the better as every each brick counts. It can’t be both side win definitely one side ended up losing.

Definitely that would be the owner. Because the contractor had calculated the cost beforehand where as for the owner he could only count the birds after the farm has been completed. By this time the contractor would have collected 90% of the payment and the counting of birds’ only start. So who in on the losing side?

.

This is the consequences of using money as a measurement tool to measure success in Swiftlet farming. Indeed if not 95% at least 80% of those who wanted to invest in Swiftlet Farming applied such method for measuring success.

If his friend built a Stand alone at a cost of Rm 200k and if he could build one less than Rm 200k perhaps Rm 180k he considered he had succeeded. This is the first step of success, often than not the first step of success most of the time ended up fails later.

That is why so many standalone farms failed. Many argued that standalone is hard to attract birds or takes a longer time to have nests compared to the shop lot unit. I totally disagree with it. Both are the same if it’s being done properly.

The reason why shop lot farms are more successful it is because there are better in terms of internal control (Micro condition) and all these have to do with how the farms being constructed, designed, managed, material use and so on.

The shop lot unit wall thickness, beam thickness, etc are of standard thickness as it has to conform to the specification of the building standard otherwise it wouldn’t get approval or Cf from the authority.

Developers build shop lot with commercialize intention where as swiftlet farmers build standalone with the intention similar to squeezing an orange. Developers submit plan according to the building standards and the thickness of the wall has to be accordance to the plan otherwise it is hard to get approval. Averagely the thickness of the wall would be around 9-12 inches depends on the value of the build. This would help in insulation.

Whereas for the standalone farms there is no standardization that the owners need to follow. As long its accordance to his budget then the construction will go ahead. Therefore it is common to see standalone farms having un-plastered walls, sand bricks laded with gaps, etc Worst still using sand brick and light weight brick. These 2 really kill the farm’s micro.

I was wondering why one could spend over few hundred thousand and yet when it comes to additional of few thousand they refused to do so. It is a misconception and perception of the owners. Most would think that as long they could get a contractor that have some experiences in building standalone it would be good but they total forgotten (perhaps may not know at all) about the farm designs which involve certain measurement, material use, etc which are most important.

Often Owners would ask the contractor, “ Tauke, you have built one farm near …where and where… please follow the same design”. In fact this is the common practice now. The owner forgotten that the contractor is constructing a build for him not a Swiftlet farm.

Can’t blame the contractor, for him he is constructing a building. As long it is done his job is completed. To the owner he is building a swiftlet farm. You see both have different mission.

Some would argue that the cheapest ways to build a standalone will lead to success. There are also some trying to build standalone below 50k (20x70, 2 storey). Are we here to compete who could build the cheapest farm? Obviously one could build a standalone (20x70,2 storey) for Rm 30k,60k, 80k,100k,150,180k,230k and so on. Don’t forget you are not here to run for the awards of cheapest farm ever build. We are here to ripe the harvest. Sometimes people are too ambitious and along the way the lost their directions.

After so many years of meeting with so many farmers from those failed badly and continue to fail ones to those very successful ones who owned not less than 5 farms that have an average of harvest of 10kgs per months. I discovered there are clear cut differences in term of attitude and personality between these 2 groups of farmers.

The successful group is down to earth person with impressive personality. While those failed ones theirs personalities are somewhat…….there is a Chinese saying “when they walked pass the green all grasses will die” I think I should not go into it. Let’s get back to swiftlet farming.

If one has taken into consideration the size of the farm, the materials use, the design, the measurements and so on and anticipated what the consequences are the pros and cons. I would say not matter how your farm won’t fall into the category of failed farm. Sadly the truth, how many owners have considered this? Perhaps only 20% of them .

The Importance of Partitioning ( Flying Route & Path). Nobody will teach you!

(one of the many failed farms I visited. The access way /door in the middle. 2 1/2 years with only 5 nests )

The purpose of partitioning in farm is to create a good Micro. Partition prevents the flow of air movement. It also helps to reduce light density in farm. One could also use partition to create a smooth flying path.

.Before you want to make use of the above to your advantage make sure you know how and where the partition should be placed. These included the high, width, length and so on. If it is done incorrectly it would cause more harm than good.

.I had seen many failed farms one of the problems facing by them is erecting the partition at the wrong place and using the wrong sizes of partitions. This restricts the flying path of birds in farm thus making population increase slow, slow nest growth, dead of young birds and so on.

.This common mistake was made even by those who have been long enough in swiftlets farming industry. You could see it clearly if you visit farms or even on pictures posted on the Web. Aren’t these people known what they are doing? They don’t even know the basic of Swiftlets flying path then how could they build a successful farm for you if you engage them to do.

.One of the basic good examples would be … if you read Dr. Negroho's book (respectable pioneer of swiftlet farming) “Breeding swiftlet in Farm House”. It is clearly indicated birds fly about 1-2 ft from walls in a circular manner and seldom roam the middle section .Yet when these so called expert erect partition s they still place the door or the exit (access way) is in the middle of the partition. This making it hard for the birds to maneuver to the centre of the partition and birds may bang on it. Once the birds encountered difficulty to access these section especially young birds they will never come back. If other farms provide better access in term of flying path then all birds will migrate there.

Picture A, shows birds rarely fly at the middle section as they always fly in a circle form. Therefore most nests that are built in farm are at the wall edges and at the sides. If you observe closely new nests formations in new farms always start at the flying route which is at the edges of the flying circle.

.

By understanding the flying route it would help when erecting partitions. Sad to say most if not all so called experience people in this field have little knowledge about this.

Picture B shows the partition erected has an access way/door in the middle for birds to fly thru. This is no correct as it affects the flying route of the birds making flying difficult. Birds need to take a sharper turn in order to fly thru the door in the middle which is not their flying route. This is a common mistake made by many that included so call experts. The results slow growth, decrease population, etc ended up fail farm.

As we look at Picture A, birds rarely fly at the middle section then why one still place the access way/door in the middle of the partition

Picture C, shows the correct way the access way/door should be placed at the side. The size varies according to the design of the farm. Some farms designs do not require partition to be erected. Because during designing stage the designer has taken into consideration of the Micro. So every sections of the farm is inter related that affect one another .With this in mind the partitioning is not required.

.These are the very basic knowledge of creating a good and successful swiflets farm and yet as time goes by there are thousand farms repeating the same mistake over and over again. Therefore it is not surprised to see failed farms stood at 80% fail. Even if you attend certain seminars it still teaches you the same mistake.

.This is just one out of hundred of criteria of creative a good macro for Swiftlet farm. Imagine if you can’t even get the basic right then how could you go futher?.......Many Sifus didn’t know about this because it’s quite technical and it needs lots of understanding in Swiftlet flying behaviors. Furthermore it is not easy. When I first read about Dr. Negro’s book many years ago. I told myself this doesn’t make sense in fact some very successful farms are having the same access way in the middle.

.As I observed further and thoroughly understand the whole concept then I realized those successful farms should have done even better if they had placed the partition at the correct place.
