GS-Sound at Eco Park & X Factor

This Video was taken at an Eco Park. This particular Swiftlet farm is using the specially mixed Gs external sound. Before this the owner Mr .W was having hard time to attract birds to play and enter his Bh.

Given the situation of having so many Bhs there and with many Bhs blasting their sounds to attract birds, the competition is stiff. Everyone wants to win. No one wants to be a looser.

Mr.W had called me, he requested a good external sound for his Bh . He wants his Bh to stand out among all the Bhs there.

It is not an easy job. I told him if you want your Bh to stand out among all the Bhs at that Eco park your Bh needs to have something that other Bhs don’t have. “Uniqueness” I told him. Let me remix an External sound for you that would take few days if you could wait. Mr. W agreed

Often most sounds that are played from Bhs are purchased from the mass market, be it from the Web or shops they are copied from one CD or Pendrive to another. It’s common to find few Bhs in a same location using the same sound because the sounds they use are from the same source. Therefore there is no uniqueness in those sounds thus making it hard to attract birds.

What is the best sound, James? This is the question I always get and my reply is “Good tuned, none distortion, perfect frequency setting and most important no one has it except you”.

Have you ever wonder why must the birds choose your Bh instead of others? What so special about your Bh? Your Bh has all the Planks, sound, Humidifiers and so on, so does the Bh next to yours…think…

When your Bh has the uniqueness which some called it the X factor then it could attract many birds to stay and make nests. The X factor that many Sifus couldn’t explain, for me I call it uniqueness. Everything could be explained it is a matter whether one could understand or otherwise. Simple, it is just like reading a book or watching a movie. If you understand what you have read then you could explain what the whole book is all about. If you can’t that means you don’t understand what you have read and to avoid embarrassment you call it X factor.

Many Sifus had hijacked the X factor, anything they don’t know, they don’t understand or they don’t know why it happens they call it X factor. This confused many Swiftlet farmers.

So actually you could create the X factor provided you know and understand what it needs to create uniqueness.

One of them is having a Good sound that no one has.

因此，确定您的燕屋農場有好的害虫控制。 即使屋内環境是好的，但是，如果害虫控制是差勁，那麽燕子的人口和燕窩就不會增長了。

Ants Kill Chicks.

Newly hatched chicks are without feathers. They are not protected from ticks, fleas and ant bite. This makes them vulnerable to pests. Often easily killed by ants if not they may be end up in the lizard stomach.

Make sure your Bh is free from pests. Often many would get rid of cockroaches and lizards but forgotten ants.

If you see young babies without feather on the floor chances are, there may have been attacked by ants, red ants.

You may wonder why they are on the floor but have you figured it out why they are three? If this happens check the nests. You will be surprised the nests are covered with Small red ants.

The future of a Swiftlet farm relies on the young babies birds. Without them there will be no population or nests for the Bh in the future. What we do now is for tomorrow or next month. It is for many years to come. Therefore in Swiftlet farming it is all about cultivating for the future.

For those who think that investing in a Bh is an easy job and it is better that other businesses, sorry to tell you that “You are wrong”. It has been a myth and due to many people uttering the words “No maintenance, only visit once a month, Low cost involve, It is an easy business and so on” make it seems a sure win investment.

With such perception many would think that as long they could get a consultant, as long they could DiY, as long they could get some books and read up they are on the right track of success. No..no..no..

Wait till you get involved then you know what I mean. Often those that stick to the principle of no maintenance, only visit once a month, no cost involved and so on would end up having failed farm.

It needs more than maintenance, it requires a clarity of mind and good observation to know and to understand what needed to be done.In other word the next step of action. If this happened what should you do next and so on.

Secondly, what needed to be put in the Bh to attract more birds? By observing the birds’ behavior and the Bh’s micro it would help us to plan. When I mention micro it means more that than just Temp, Rh, light density, flying path and so on. But these are the common components of micro that come into the mind of many when I say micro be it experience or novice farmers.

So make sure your Bh has good pest control. Even if the Micro is good but if the pest control is poor then the population and nests won’t grow.

了解您的板條

現在是越來越難找到品质优良的板條。 好品質的Meranti是很缺乏的，就算有它們也是從小樹的。 從小樹的木板是不耐久的。 它們的顏色也是与老樹不同的。

我是比較喜歡褐色的那些，不是紅色的那種。 多数可以在市場上找到的板條是紅色，淺紅色或粉紅的那種，而卻它們是容易地可以在多数的鋸木廠，甚至可以在五金店找得到。 我是不會使用這些的。 當談到板條時我是從未妥協的。 品質和耐久性是優先的，因為那就是人造白金生長的地方。

這些是有被處理的木板。 被處理過的木板是不會有青苔問題的。 如果您不想要在將來的几年有青苔在您的板條，您就應該在您的燕屋農場使用這些木板。 看看它們的表面全部都是被用沙紙打過的。 沒有任何的木眼。

工人為燕屋農場下載高级的Meranti板條。 載來的有不同的長度。 我等待這些木板來已經有一陣子了。 千萬要記住「好的板條是不容易可以得到的」。 如果您可以到處都發現它們，機會是......它們是從低等级的種類。

工人很小心地卸載板條，不損壞它們。 它不是與價格有關。 它是有沒有貨的關係。 雖則對許多人來説這些板條看起來是与那些在市場上的板條一樣的，但是它唯一的差别您只可以在1年后在您的燕屋農場由您的肉眼才可以看得出來。 好的木板可以持續許多歲月，沒有青苔的問題。 普通的那些在1年的時間有高濕度將有青苔的問題。

不要以爲築窩的板條是不重要的。 必須了解您的板條，因為那是人造白金生長的地方。

Know your Nesting Planks.

It is harder to find good quality nesting plank nowadays. The good grade Meranti woods are scarce and if available they are from young trees. Woods from young trees are not durable. Their color are different from those that are old.

I prefer those that are in brownish color, not red. Most nesting planks available in the market are of Red, light red or pinkish and they are easily available in most sawmills and even hardware shops. I don’t use them. When it comes to nesting planks I never compromise. Quality & durability is priority because that is the place where the White Gold grows.

These are treated woods. Treated woods won’t have fungus problems. If you want fungus free planks in your Bh for many years to come these are the woods you should use. Look at the surface they are all sand downed. There are no wood eyes.

Workers unloading the high grade Meranti planks for a Bh. It comes in different length. I have been waiting for them for quite a while. Bear in mind “Good Planks are not easily available”. If you could find them everywhere chances are……they are from the low grade categories

Smooth finished with groves for easy perching of birds. There’re still many who believe that Nesting Planks shouldn’t be sand down and it should be as rough as possible for easy perching and birds love them. These are all myths. In Those days Sawmills don’t have the equipments to grove the planks therefore many resorted to using rough and unsmooth planks. With today’s technology planks grooving are available in most sawmills and these groves are for the purpose of easy perching.

Worker Carefully unload the planks, as not to damage them. It is not the price that matters. It is the availability. Though to many these planks look the same compared to those common planks in the market, the only differences you could tell by your naked eye after 1 year period in the Bh. The good ones would last many years, free from fungus. The common ones within 1 year of high Rh would have fungus problem.

Don’t think that Nesting Planks is not important. Know your Planks, because that is the place where the White Gold grows.

燕屋密集‧噪音污染 引燕難達100％成功率

　（巴生11日訊）巴生和港口區近年來許多燕屋林立，惟因燕屋太多、工廠排放污煙和發出噪音，促使本區引燕成功率不能達到100％。

　燕屋設計業者潘耐熹指出，本區引燕活動的成功率屬第3線（70％）， 目前巴生至港口一帶遍佈約300間燕屋，幾乎每天有燕屋設立。

經營地點重要

　他說，城市人引燕，大多數使用荒廢的舊店屋居改建成燕屋，甚少會購置芭園地興建燕屋。

　他說，燕屋太多、工廠排放污煙和發出的吵雜聲等環境因素，都會導致減低引燕的成功率。

　他說，在這裡生活的燕群沒有減少，老烏仍然留在燕屋，可是幼烏一旦發現其他地點可以覓食，就會飛往他處群居，最重要是確保幼烏留下，就會引來越多的燕子住進去。

　潘耐熹接受《中國報》訪問時說，許多剛投入引燕業缺乏經驗的新人，都湧往燕屋多且燕群飛舞的地點設立燕屋，以為即有的環境可以吸引燕子築巢，但這未必能達到預期效果。

　“經營燕屋最重要地點佳，反其道而行，到荒芭或稻田開辟燕屋一樣能成功經營，雖然起初燕子不多，只要環境條件有利就能引來燕群。”

　他說，若有關地點附近有燕子出現就適合引燕。

　他以吉蘭丹和實兆遠為例說，當地的引燕業雖活躍，可是燕屋逾千間已經達到飽和。
燕屋設計行業崛起隨著引燕業蓬勃發展，帶動燕屋設計行業崛起。

　潘耐熹說，早前舊式的燕屋，業者為了省錢而交由建築業者興建，以為把屋子蓋起，使用普通的木板釘架、便宜的磚塊和播放燕啼音響即可，孰不知忽略細節，以致燕屋不符合規格，引燕失敗。

　他指出，現代化的燕屋從初期的2樓建至5層樓，以前燕屋開一個洞口讓燕子飛入，若不喜歡室內環境就會飛走，新設計就會在燕屋內開設更多“房間”和第二個洞口，讓燕子可選擇不同的“路線”飛行，就能把它們留在燕屋築巢。

用鋅板和寳麗瓏在屋頂

Tampin的Y先生問我，「James如何可以防止竊賊從屋頂进來，因爲如果我不打算按水泥天花板，同時可以减少從屋頂的热氣與最便宜和最可靠的防熱材料？」

您可以這樣做，如果您是一個成本意識的人或您沒有什麽多的預算，您可以考虑安裝鋅板在屋頂，在瓦或石膏之下的一塊天花板。

雖然它不是最好的方法，與水泥天花板一般，但是它一樣可以幫助防止熱氣從屋頂进來。 一些人也許勸告您用钢板，但是我覺得它是太重了而且它也不是便宜的。 如果屋頂的木結構是不足够堅強，它可能對燕屋農場帶來危險，屋頂可以囘倒塌。

竊賊是機會尋找者，如果當他們從屋頂进來時面對困難，他們也許選擇比較容易进如的隔壁燕屋農場。

雖然鋅板不是那樣的堅韌的，好象水泥一樣，但是它也足以防止他們进入燕屋農場。

在安裝了鋅板之後，1-2寸的寳麗瓏將被安置在天花板頂部，在鋅板的下面和天花板之間。

通過這樣它可以减少热氣。 這是其中一個可以减少热其最經濟的方式。 我有看過許多的燕屋農場使用Rockwool、泡影箔等等，老實說，我可以告诉您沒有一個可以好用過寳麗瓏，或者不可能相比。 價格方面，寳麗瓏是最便宜的。 它也是很容易工作並且有好防熱質量。

有許多不同種類的寳麗瓏，他們有許多不同的等级。 它的價格是根据質量和等级的。 記住，不是所有都是同樣的。 千萬別讓價格和厚度唬弄。 防熱材料的質量是与它的密度有关。它是密度越高就越昂貴的。 您可能會很驚奇3寸的類型比1寸的不來的好，1寸 的可能是很高密度的。

您可能會後悔您如果您選擇了便宜的那些。 整體的想法是减少燕屋農場的热氣和做到對燕子有益的内部。 我們不是在這裡競爭誰最可以节省成本。

Zinc plate & Styrofoam for Roof

Mr. Y of Tampin asked, “James how to prevent thieves from coming in from the roof if I don’t intend to build concrete ceiling at the same time to reduce heat from the roof with the cheapest and most reliable insulation material?”

Here is how you could do it if you are a cost conscious person or you don’t have the budget to do a concrete ceiling you may consider installing zinc plate on the roof below the roof tiles or asbestos.

Though it may not be as good as concrete ceiling but it does help to prevent them from coming in from the roof. Some may advise you to put steel plate instead but I find it too heavy and it is not cheap. If the roof wood structure is not strong enough it possess danger to the building, the roof may collapse.

Thieves are opportunities seekers, if they face difficulty while getting in thru the roof they might opt for the Bh next door that is easy to get in.

Though the zinc plate is not as tough as concrete but it is good enough to prevent them from entering the Bh.

After installed the zinc plate a 1-2” Styrofoam is placed on top of the ceiling board between the Zinc plate and the ceiling board below.

By doing this it could reduce heat. This is one of the most economical ways of reducing heat. I‘ve seen many Bhs that used Rockwool, bubble foils, etc I sincerely tell you none of them could come close or beat Styrofoam. In term of price Styrofoam is the cheapest. It is easy to work with and has good insulating quality.

There are many type of Styrofoam, they come in many grades. The prices are based on the quality and grades. Bear in mind not all are the same. Don’t be fooled by the prices and their thickness. The insulation quality is related to the foam density in it. The higher the density the more expensive they are. You may be surprised that the 3” thick type may not be better than a 1”, the later that is of high density.

You would regret if you opt for those that are cheap. The whole idea is to reduce heat and to make your Bh’s micro friendlier to birds. We are not here to compete who is better in cost saving.
