Putting Birds dropping in new swiftlet farm has been practiced by many swiftlet farmers. The reason being is to imitate the environment of an old Swiftlet farm. If this is a good technique then why successful old Swiftlet farms are removing most of their bird’s droppings.
Well it could be argued in many ways, but my opinion is that do not remove too much of the dropping. For Swiftlet farms that are in the initial grow stage which from 2-3 years of age you could do it like Mr.Y a reader of mine who owned a Swiflet farm in the North.
He scopes all the droppings into the pails and leaves them in the farm. Once the pails are full with dropping he will take them away. He brings in empty pails again and fills them up with dropping and leave there again. It goes in a cycle till the droppings filled up the pails.
It depends on the number of nests and the population of the birds in the Bh. If the population is large then clearing up the dropping has to be done on a monthly basis. If not it could be done every 2 months which differ from bh to bh.
I have seen Swiftlet farms which have a very clean floor though it has more than 1000 nests and I have seen very dirty Swiflet farms which never clear its droppings.
My conclusion is never too clean or too dirty. It must be balanced.
Good Swiflet farming All!
