Even an old single storey wooden house is turned into Swiftlet farm.

Last week I was invited to do a land survey by Mr.C of the Northern of Selangor. Mr.C wanted to build a Stanlone on his 4 acre land which is near the mangrove area. Currently a small part of the land is being utilized for fish raring. The remainder of the land has been left idle and he thinks it is a waste and since there are so many people doing Swiftlet farming must well he joins in.

But Mr.C is smart, knowing there are so many farms here he knew the competition would be stiff and any mistake make would be costly.

He told me “James I have to make sure everything is being done properly from the start. I don’t want to build a stanlone ended up without nests. I have seen many of my friends’ farms empty for many years. That is why I engaged you”.

I was there to see the landscape and the wind condition. By understand this it would help me to position the entrance hole and the whole building. Since this land is located near the sea I have to take consideration of the wind in my designing.

So the Birds Landing Factor is very important. It is just like an Airport. The size, the length and the position of the runway are influenced by the size of the plane (number of plane), the wind condition, and the surrounding areas and so on.

Well anybody could build a Stanlone but to build one that will attract birds to stay is not easy.

This area is good and very potential for Swiftlet farming. Thru experience we don’t even need to do the birds test. We could see and feel the place is right. There are plentiful of green here.

After spending hours there and explained my findings to Mr.C I am almost exhausted. Then we headed to a small shop for a drink.

I personally like this area it is very potential provided a good standalone is being built. Otherwise it would be just another huge farm with no nests.

修补失败的燕屋農場

這是我几个月前修補的燕屋農場。 几个月前我也有寫过关于这个燕屋農場。 它是我見过的一個最烂的燕屋農場，所有的电线是在搖晃的，一个非常破舊的燕屋農場，使用最稀薄的三夹板作為分開，所有牆壁都沒有防热材料。 設計是那么的可怕，就算一個7歲男孩可以做到更好。

那不止全部，所有的高音揚聲器都不正當地被安置了。 燕屋主甚而不可以區別內部聲音和外部聲音之間。

溫度是38度的，並且湿度是离50%以下很远的，並且燕屋主除了等，什么也沒有做。

承包商收了昂貴的費用，但是却提供了那么糟糕的工作和設備。這就是他們怎麼获得極高的利润。

在2年之后，所有都完完全全的顯露了，和平常一样，沒有燕子，只有几个燕窝，只有现在燕屋主開始擔心。

我被邀请来修補這個燕屋農場。 实际上，我不喜欢修補燕屋農場。 因为它是清洗其他承包商或顧問大便工作。

燕屋主声称他有一系列的燕屋農場書本的收藏，從東南亞各地。 他一而再，再而三的讀了他們許多次，出席了許多研討會，但是他不知道他的燕屋農場里有的問題。

Turning Around A Failed Farm

Look at the nests and all the new marking.

This was the Swiftlet farm I revamped few months back. I did write about it few months back. It was one of the worse Swiftlet farm I had ever seen, with all wires dangling, very shabby farm using the thinnest plywood as partitions, all walls are not insulated. The design is so terrible that a 7 years old boy could do better.

That’s not all, all tweeters were wrongly positioned. The owner can’t even distinguish between internal sound and external sound.

The temperature was 38dg and the Rh is way below 50% and the owner didn’t do anything about it other than wait.

The contractor charges an expensive fee but provides lousy work and equipments .This is how they made extremely high profit.

After 2 years everything revealed, as usual no birds, few nests and so on then only the owner started to worry.

I was asked to revamp this farm. In fact I hate revamping farm. Because it is a job of cleaning the SHIT left over by other contractor/consultant.

The Owner claimed that he has huge collection of Swiftlet farming books from all over South East Asia. He reads them repeatedly many times, has attended many seminars but he didn’t know the problem of his farm..

Surprisingly when I spoke to him about Swiftlets, how they choose their farm for roosting and prefer the type of farm. The owner was totally lost. He told me this is the first time someone has spoken to him about this.

Anyway after revamping, the shabby farm has turned in to a Good Swiftlet farm. Now they are birds staying and making nests on those Styrofoam.

So no points of waiting something have to be done. You may wait one year 3 years or even 5 years. If you have not got it right no matter how long you wait the birds just don’t make nests.

Get the basic right first then only take about the nests.

80% Swiftlet farm can’t get the basic right. I guess many would agree with me.

蜥蜴可以攀登牆壁。 如果外部的墙壁不是塗了光滑的灰泥，那么它們可以容易地爬入通过入口孔。

它們是攀登專家，也很喜歡吃小鳥。 它們经常爬在樹上来尋找鸟窝由其是小鸟和成长的鳥，也特别爱爬在椰子树上。

有些蜘蛛是有毒的。 千万别用您的手去拨开它們，虽然您已经戴上了手套。

蛇也是喜欢攀登的动物。

我曾经發現了一只果子狸居住在我燕屋農場的天花板上。 當它們回來时，您可以看到燕子的反應。 如果它是与通常不一样，一定是有事不对劲。

比通常的貓頭鷹还小。 但是這只馬來亞貓頭鷹可以在天空中能抓取燕子。

蜈蚣喜歡在涼快和潮濕的地方由其是燕屋農場，因为燕屋農場提供大量的昆蟲给它們吃，

不同種类的蜈蚣。可以在燕屋農場找到。

老鼠也可以在燕屋農場找到。

千万不要留紙產品在燕屋農場。 紙板，报紙等等。 許多燕屋主使用報紙来封鎖通風孔。 這是真正地不明智的。

我在Kedah有看过有鴿子的窝在环绕區，尤其是那些失败的燕屋農場。

在參觀了您的燕屋農場之后，如果您發現您的腿和手有紅色斑點，並且它是痒的。 那是一定是跳蚤的作品。

您可以很容易地在牆壁上看到。

有白蟻的板條。 難怪沒有燕窝。

What can be Found in your Swiftlet farm Besides Swiftlet.

When you enter your Swiftlet farm especially those Standalones that located in the plantation area beware. You might meet something that you never expected.


Some Swiftlet farms attract more Bats than Siwftlets.

This type of Gecko is commonly found in Stanalone. If they could eat a mice what is baby birds.

Monitor lizard can climbs walls. If the exterior is not plastered smooth then they could easily climb in thru the entrance hole.

They are expert in climbing and like eating birds. They used to climb trees in search for birds nests looking for the young and adult birds especially coconut trees.

Some spiders are poisonous. Don't simply remove them with your hand even you wear gloves.

Snakes are good climber too.

Once I discovered a pair of Musang living in the ceiling of my Swiftlet farm. You can see the reaction of birds when they home coming. If It is different from usual, there must be something not right.

Smaller then Normal Owl. This Malayan Owl could capture birds in the air.

Centipede they like cool and damp places like Swiftlet farm which provide plenty of insect which they could eat.

Different type of centipede. It can be found in farm.

Rats could also be found in farm.

Never leave paper products in Swiftlet farm. Cardboard , news papers and so on. Many farmers use Newspaper to seal off the Vent-hole. It is really unwise.

I have seen few failed farms in Kedah which have Pigeon nests at the roving area.

After visited your Swiftlet farm if you discovered your legs and hands have red spots and it is itchy. That is the job of fleas.

Can be easily seen on the walls.

Planks infested with termite. No wonder no nests.

两年只有5个燕窝没有任何的抱怨，现在3个半月有26个窝却多多抱怨

「James我的燕屋農場現在有26个窝， 6个在第2楼和20个在第1楼」。

這就是從Raub的G先生通过電話告诉我的。

我是從P.D刚检查完一個獨立燕屋農場的建築，就在这个时候我的電話響了。 他是非常高兴的。 在超过2年的时间只有区区的5个窝也就没有增量了。顧問也再找不到踪影。

我是在2010年10月的时候被他雇佣来修補这个燕屋農場。 我擴大了入口孔，增加了高音揚聲器的数量(好的高音揚聲器)，改了外声音(Gs-9) & 內聲音(催眠)，把一些通風孔密封，架設了一些分開，拆除几个牆壁，噴洒了Love Potion等等。 我重新設計內部使燕子更加容易进入。

這就是我做的一切。 整整两年，那就是24個月区区只有5个窝，但是現在做了修补之后只是短短的3个半月，這個燕屋農場就有了26个窝，除了其他窝標號以外。 正是太奇妙了。

雖然，在修補之前，它平均的溫度是在28-29度和湿度大约是85-90%。 有這樣好的温度和湿度，但是还是無法吸引燕子到這個燕屋農場停留和做窝。 這就是为什么G先生是那么的憂慮。

所以，到底首先是出了什麼錯？ 當我开始參觀这个燕屋農場时发现有許多問題。 我可以很容易地記下很多。 一张A4的紙张可能不是够填完全部。

現在解決了所有的問題之後G先生可以看到結果。

我还记得在修補了第一個月之后， G先生常常打电话给我並且问了許多問題。 包括那些真正沒有邏輯的一些。 他问的就好像通常问的「為什麼1個月了还是沒有增加？」

我记得我回应了他「G先生您默默地等待了2年的时间，並且浪費了Rm 60k的整修費用，没有问为您修造了这个废物燕屋農場任何东西的顧問。 但是，我进來为您修補您的(废物燕屋農場)的費用只是少于給他的5%，仍然您却问了許多事和问了那么多愚蠢的問題」。

但是他不敢再问任何愚蠢的东西。 没办法，多數如果不是所有的燕屋主都會盼望他們的燕屋農場有奇蹟出现，最好就是他們在开聲音的第二天就可以收穫10kg的燕窝。 這不是笑話，而且也不是滑稽的，那些做燕屋農場顾问的那些人就知道我在讲什麼。

就是有象這样的人。 不僅小的百分比，但是却是大的百分比。

無論如何，我是很高興他的燕屋農場有改进了並且希望他可以記住我教他的一切。

2 years 5 nests no complain now 3-1/2 months 26 nests lots of Complain

“James my farm has 26 nests now, 6 on the 2^nd floor and 20 on the 1^st floor”.

This is what Mr.G from Raub said thru the phone.

I had just got back from P.D to check out the construction of a standalone farm and my phone rang. He was very happy. After more than 2 years with only 5 nests thereafter no more increase. The consultant can’t be found anymore.

I was engaged to revamp his farm in Oct 2010. I enlarged the entrance hole, increased the number of tweeters (good tweeters), changed the external (to Gs-9) & internal sound (Hypnotic), sealed up some vent-holes, erected some partitions, hacked few walls, sprayed Love potion and so on. I redesigned the internal to make it easy for the birds to access.

This is what I did. For 2 years that is 24 months only 5 nests and now with such a short period of 3and a half months after the revamp, this farm has 26 nests excluding other nest marking. This’s marvelous.

Though before the revamp the average Temperature was around 28-29c and the Rh is around 85-90%. With such good temp and Rh yet this farm still unable to attract birds to stay and make nests. This makes Mr.G worries.

So what has gone wrong in the beginning? When I first visited the farm there were many problems. I could easily jot many of them down. A piece of A4 size paper is not enough to fill them all.

After all problems were solved now Mr.G could see the result.

I still remembered after the first month of revamp, Mr. G called me frequently and ask many questions. Including those really no logic ones. He is one of those who ask “why 1 month already there is no nests increase?”

I remember I blasted him “Mr. G you can silently wait for 2 years and wasted the renovation cost of Rm 60k without asking the consultant that built you a rubbish farm anything. And I came in to revamp your farm with the cost of less than 5% of what he had given you (a Rubbish farm) and yet you request so many things and asked foolish questions.”

But now he dare not say anything foolish. What to do most if not all swiftlet farmers would expect their farms to have miracle if possible the moment they switched on the sound the next day they want to harvest 10kg of nests. This is not a joke and it is not funny those who had been doing consultancy for Swiftlet farming know what I mean.

There are people like this. Not just a small percentage but a big percentage.

Anyhow I am glad that his farm has improved and hopes that he could remember what I had taught him.
