建築獨立燕屋農場在吉蘭丹

幾天前我去了吉蘭丹見W先生，我的一個讀者和將是一個獨立燕屋農場的主人。 他僱用我修建20x 80， 3層樓的獨立燕屋農場。

吉蘭丹是其中一個非常有燕屋農場潛能的地方，因爲它有大量的綠色、稻田、河流等等的自然環境。 工业发展仍然是缺乏在後邊的如果与其他州比较，但是這就是它的好處，對燕屋農場而言。

THE BOTTOM TWEETERS AT ENTRANCE-HOLE

The above picture is one of the successful Bh in Kelantan. This Bh is adopting the Bottom External Tweeters technique which I have written in my earlier article “Where to Fix the external Tweeters”. This Bh uses 2 external tweeters at the bottom (Motorola Pz-16) and the above are 2 Audax. The Pz-16 at the bottom is the major attractor not the Audax at the top. Many may not have noticed this though 4 tweeters work together.

No wonder this Bh is attracting lots of birds. It is not luck or coincident. What I had written is being practiced by many successful Bhs. It is a technique which many wouldn’t want to teach. Some may have been practicing it for long time without knowing that they are in the right path.

I always tell my readers observe and learn. Don’t just look at those birds circling at those successful Bhs and admire how many birds or nests they have and how lucky the owners are. Admiring doesn’t help you. Look and search for the extra clues all are out there for you to learn. Though you may not have the opportunity to go inside these Bhs but at least from outside it shows and teaches you something.

The Ability to attract birds to enter the Bhs is as important as having a good macro. If the birds don’t come and don’t fly into the Bh no matter how good the macro is, it’s useless.

But if this is my Bh I would exclude the light bulb at the entrance. I just don’t buy the technique of fixing a light bulb outside the Bh. You could do that if you want, not me.

Building Standalone in Kelantan

I was in Kelantan few days ago to meet up with Mr. W, one of my readers and owner of a soon to be Standalone. He had engaged me to construct a 20x 80, 3 storey Stanalone.

Kelantan is one of the most potential places for Swiftlet farming due it natural environment which has plenty of greens, padi fields, rivers, etc. The industrial development is still lack behind compared to other state but this is an advantage as far as Swiftlet farming is concerned.

Generally Swiftlet farmers look for places that have no industrial pollution. Areas that have low industrial activities are preferred. Areas that have factories that release chemical gases should be avoid as Swiftlets are very sensitive to the chemical smell. Since there are not many industrial activities in Kelantan therefore having a Bh here would have it advantages. Though there are many Bhs here and more are coming up but the ratio of the number of Bh to the green area is still low compared to other state. Therefore it is not surprised the successful rate of Bh in Kelantan is much higher than other state.

Secondly the high successful rate is also the result of the way the Kelatanese built their Bhs. It seemed that they really pay lots of attentions to the heat factors of Bh. I guess they do really understand the importance of macro. Here the roof insulation is a must. If not all at least 80% of the bhs here have double layer roof. If you travel down South or to the West you don’t see this practice perhaps only a handful of Bhs do. That is why I always stressed the importance of wall and roof insulation.

The location of the Bh is at T.Merah which is about an hour drive fron K.B. The standalone is not far from a river and surrounding with good vegetation. There were few huge logging companies around here and when it rains swiftlets storm this area for insects which hide at the logs. This is another food ground for Swiftlets.

There were few existing Stanalones here most are 3 storey. Some are quite new and as usually it will be very challenging.

After visiting the site we went to a Saw mill to have a look at the Nesting plank. Though there are plenty of timbers here but the Dark Brown Meranti which sought after by many are not available in Kelantan. This doesn’t surprise me as many Bhs from Kelantan and Terengganu often order their planks directly from me. The owner of the saw mill claimed that it is hard to get such wood in Kelantan and most Bh owners would settle for the cheaper Meranti. I told him they would have the risk of fungus on planks in future and he agreed.

With such environment of green, mountains and rivers which causes an atmosphere of high humidity and yet most Bhs use non KD low graded planks. I wonder is it the price factor or ignorance factor. I guess only the Bh owners here have the answer.

外部的高音揚聲器的目的是叫從遠方的燕子引導它們进入燕屋農場。 一旦燕子是在入口孔的附近，它們將調查聲音的來源。 明显地，從這些高音揚聲器播出來的外聲必須是有足夠的吸引力，比如它的清晰，它高底的聲音等等。 否則燕子是不會想到那高音揚聲器的附近。 一些也許會飛到它的附近行，但是卻轉回頭並且可能不再回來。

高音揚聲器的正確設施對於新的燕屋農場的成功是很重要的。 您是否有想過，爲什麽外聲被開了之後，燕子只是飞到離入口孔不遠的地方，有些燕子就飛行接近高音揚聲器，但是沒有进入燕屋農場，並且許多以后沒有返回。 它有兩個可能，第一，就是它的聲音沒有吸引力，或者第二，它的位置(安置)高音揚聲器是不正當，或者兩者都是。

圖片A顯示，當燕子從高音揚聲器的頂部下落，很自動地它會飛離和飛出入口孔因爲那下落的力量。

但是圖片B，燕子不可能棲息在底部的高音揚聲器。 為了他們可以聽到或棲息，他們必須在底部的高音揚聲器之上飞行，然而這樣就推擠自己进入燕屋農場。 如果，環繞區固定2臺外在高音揚聲器在相反方，是更好的。 這將鼓勵它們飛行入環繞區玩和這樣就減少適應时间。

然而，為了這一點可以很有效地運作切记外在聲音必須是很好的，入口孔必須是在正确的位置，並且正确的大小，環繞區的大小也必須是適當的，燕屋農場必須也有好的芳香氣味等等。

通过瞭解這樣行為我认為，如果高音揚聲器被安置在入口孔的底部而不是在上面然後這樣會改變下落強迫因而增加燕子可能飛行进入燕屋農場。

您總是可以不同意我的講法或者争辩，說傳統方式是更好的，但是我坚持我的觀察和使用這樣方法，而且我從那些燕屋農場也看到了結果。

在這麽多年的觀察和參觀的許多燕屋農場，我不可能否認安置外在高音揚聲器真正地有关于燕子如何进入燕屋農場，特别是新的燕屋農場的燕子。

那么千萬別隨隨便便的安裝您的外在高音揚聲器在入口孔。 少少的变化可以為您帶來很大的區別。

我希望我與大家分享的技術和信息將帮助所有的燕屋農場增加燕子群和燕窩。

Where to Fix the External Tweeters?

There are many ways to install the External sound tweeters at the Entrance hole but which is the best and most effective way to entice Swiftlets to enter the Bh especially new Bh?

The purpose of the External Tweeters is to call Swiftlets from far to guide them to enter the Bh. Once the birds are near the Entrance hole they would investigate the source of sound. Obviously the external sound that comes out from these tweeters has to be attractive in term of clarity, its tone of high and low pitches and so on. Otherwise the birds wouldn’t want to come near the tweeters at all. Some may just fly near it and turn away and may not return at all.

The correct installation of tweeters is vital for the success of the new Bh. Have you ever wonder why after the External sound has been switched on but birds only flying few feet away from the entrance hole and some just trying to fly close to the Tweeters but didn’t enter the Bh and later many didn’t return. Well it could be the sound which is not attractive or the positioning (placement) of the tweeters is wrongly positioned or it could be both.

Let’s examine the later which is the positioning of the external tweeters. Traditionally many Sifus often encourage or advise that the external tweeters at the entrance hole should be placed at the top and at the sides of the left and right of the entrance hole. Sighted that this is the best way to attract birds to fly into the Bh. It is common to see many Bhs adopting such technique. It doesn’t mean this way of placing the external tweeters is not workable. But if you were given a better choice or a much effective way of enticing the birds to enter the bh faster, then which would you follow?

Swiftlet farming is all about the flexibility of switching techniques to adapt to what birds wanted. Don’t forget it is not about following our wants or what others commonly done and we just follow.

Look at the picture above which I had drawn. If you have observed often how birds responded to sound at the entrance hole (new Bhs) you would discover that they would fly to the top tweeters and drop back. Often couple of times and some may fly into the bh and most wouldn’t. The drop back naturally forces the birds to fly out instead of flying into the bh.( for tweeters fixed at top of entrance hole)

Picture A shows that when the birds drop from the top tweeters they would automatically fly off and out from the entrance hole because of the drop off forces.

Whereas for picture B birds can’t perch to the lower tweeters that is on the bottom. In order for them to listen or perch at the bottom tweeters they have to fly above the bottom tweeters thus push themselves into the Bh. It is even better if the roving is fixed with 2 external tweeters at the opposite end. This would encourage them to fly into the roving to play and reduce the adaptation time.

Nevertheless, in order for this to work effectively do remember that the external sound has to be good, the entrance hole has to be at the right position and right sizes, the size of the roving has to be appropriate, the Bh has to have good effective Aroma smell and so on.

By understanding such behavior I conclude that if the Tweeters were to placed at the bottom of the entrance hole instead of the top then this would changed the drop back forces thus increasing the possibility of the birds to fly into the Bh.

In fact all my Bhs are adopting such technique and I see higher percentage of birds flying into bh compared to those that the tweeters were placed at the top.

You could always disagree with me or argue that the traditional way is much better but I stick to what I have observed and the result that I see from those bhs that using such method.

After many years of observation and visited numerous of Bhs I cannot deny that the positioning of the external tweeters really have an impact on how birds entering bhs, especially new bhs.

So never simply install your external tweeters at the entrance hole. A little change makes lots of differences.

I hope my sharing of techniques and info would help all Bhs to increase birds population and nests.

對于新的燕屋農場，在一切完成了和在開了聲音之後是每1個月參觀一次。 當進入新的燕屋農場時，确定您不要帶多的人。燕屋農場不是一個餐館。 在這個时间您應該有備而來，應該有一個查明表什麽是需要被觀察和完成的事情。 一旦您完成了您的任務，您必須立刻離開燕屋農場。 不要浪費時間周圍看看走走，像這樣的事您可以在附近的公園那裏做。

How Often To Visit Bh?

How often does one needs to check the Bh? This is a question commonly asked by many readers. It’s all depended on the Bh itself, whether it is a new Bh, old one or a very successful one.

Let’s start with new Bh, those that are just completed and just started their sounds.

For newly build Bhs, frequent visiting wouldn’t be good as it frighten birds that come in to the Bh. It takes a very brave bird to flying into the Bh of total new environment with all those unfamiliar routes, unpleasant cement smell, etc. It takes time for them to adapt to this new environment sometimes averagely 6 months or more.

If the Bh is being frequently visited 1 to 2 times a week or even more which I knew many are doing it. It would do harm than good to the Bh especially new Bh.

There were many cases where Bh owners complained to me that after opening the sound for 2 months he see no birds flying into Entrance hole anymore . Claiming previously the first week there were hundreds of birds flying in and out. The first thing I suspected was these owners of the Bhs must have been visiting the Bhs often. I have met up with many owners that are facing the same problems and one of the encounters was with M. H from Selidi, Johor.

“ Mr.James the first week I open the sound many birds come and play. They fly in and out of the Entrance hole. After 1 month I don’t see them anymore. What happened?”

“ Mr.H, I am sure that this is your first Bh. And you are so excited and wanting to know, whether the birds had stayed? You want to know which parts of the farm the fly to. You also want to know whether the tweeter or sound is perfectly installed at the right places and so on. Therefore you visit you farm at least few times a week because you are uncertain about all the things that have been done.”

“Mr.James, you are dam right lah! I visit my farm at least 2 times a week to check out. How come you know all these? Wah you can read peoples mind ah?

“No Mr. H, because I have seen and met too many people like you.”

For new Bh after everything has been completed and the sound switched on the best is to visit once every 1 months. When visiting new Bh make sure you do not bring too many people to the Bh. The Bh is not a restaurant. During this time you should have a check list of things that needed to be observed and done. Once you have completed your task you have to leave the Bh immediately. Don’t spend your time looking around and walking around you could do that later at the Park.

There are some owners that spend many hours inside the Bh. They even brought foods inside and smoke. They do all sorts of thing that you couldn’t imagine this make the situation worst.

The best time to check the new Bh is from 10.00am to 2.00pm. During this time you could spray the Aroma (Love Potion). Delay the visit if it is a raining day. The best is on a hot day.

Things to check:

1) The Amps (whether it’s running well/ overheating. Switch it off and on again)

2) Tweeters (check all segregated section. See any sections is not working)

3) Birds droppings (How many spots and where there are. This would indicate whether the flying path is correct or otherwise)

4) The Humidity and temperature

5) All timers (some timers may not work after 1 month)

6) Leakage from piping joints.

7) Check the volume of the Amp

8) Check any pest. (Cockroaches, Ants.etc) poison them

9) Any extra ordinary big patches of dropping (Owl).

10) After all completed and rectified then you can spray the Aroma. Once finished spraying the Aroma (Love Potion) you may leave the Bh .

Jot down in a notebook what you have done on every visit so that you could compare the findings. The number of Birds Shit spot is important. Its indicate how many birds that have visited the Bh and stayed.

Don’t visit your Bh every week or every other day. Obviously it makes you happier to see your achievement when you are inside your own Bh. But the end result would be disastrous if you can’t control your Swiftlet farming urge.

昨天我在Bidor見了一位L先生。 他想要为他的燕屋農場找一些好的內部聲音。 L先生在燕屋農場并不是新手。 他早在几年前已经開始了燕屋農場。 雖然他住在Bidor，经营一家金属预制件和机器的生意，但是他所有的燕屋農場都是在Bidor之外的地方。 他有6间燕屋農場，多数都在多处的Perak和在Pahang。

打從我開始我的部落格时我就认识了他，他曾经打过很多电话给我与我交換知識。 他是真正的一位燕屋農場熱心者。 他要我参观他的燕屋農場很多次了，但是由于我的时间表总是排得紧紧的，我就是没有时间给他，我知道他是很不高兴的，尤其是當我延遲了我們的预约… 哈。.哈。

L先生要我特別地为他再混合一些內部聲音。 他的原因是他已经对那些这么多年來買下和那些最近買的內部聲音很灰心了。 那些声音的花費有的几百零吉，也有的几千零吉的，並且他的收藏里是有那么的多。 从本地的到邻国的他都有買。

這次他想要请我吃午餐，並且同時我可以把我為他特別做的新內部聲音交给他。 我最后一次見到他是去年的年头，那也是一年多的时间了。 他抱怨的说「James，要请您吃午餐也那么难」。 因此這次我不可能再延遲我們的见面。 為了我们的友誼，我特地驾车到Bidor見他。

「James,我已经到那餐館了。您在那里？」

「L先生，我是在那角落停我的汽車」。

「嗨，James，你好吗? 我聽说您做的不错…」

「还好啦… 。 現在是有点忙」。

「L先生，您的燕屋農場也做的很好嘛」

「不错啦，James， 最旧的那俩间燕屋農場是做的很好的，其他的也是在追上。 我必須感謝您發明了Love Potion」。

「不客气。 在我每次見您的時候，總是有好消息的… 哈… 哈… 您為什麼那么紧张要內部聲音呢？ 如果我沒记錯您已經有大量的聲音了」。

「James,我在那几间新的燕屋農場使用几个新的內部聲音，声称是最好的。 我的朋友和許多师傅都說有更多幼燕子的声音聽起來是更好的。 他們說最佳的內部聲音應該包含越多的幼燕子声音，和不应该其他成熟燕子的聲音。 但是在使用了它之后，我的新燕屋農場似乎没有任何作用，並且燕子的人口和燕窝也沒有增加，就好像我期望的一样。 」

這不是我第一次聽見这样的抱怨。 我接到許多讀者的电话问我是否有包含100%的幼燕子聲音，或者只是幼燕子和掺有一點点成熟燕子聲音的內部聲音。 我的回復是沒有，但是他們却是很失望的。

I was in Bidor yesterday to meet up with Mr.L. He wants some good internal sounds for his Bhs. Mr.L is not new in Swiftlet farming. He had started it many years ago. Though he lives in Bidor as he runs a Metal fabrication & engineering company but all his Bhs are located outside Bidor. He has 6 Bhs which many of them located in Perak and the rest in Pahang.

I have known him since I started my blog where he used to call me often to exchange knowledge. He is really a swiftlet farming enthusiast. He had asked me visit him but due to my tight schedule I couldn’t make it and he don’t seem to like it when I delayed our supposed to be appointment…ha..ha.

Mr.L wanted me to specially remix some internal sounds for him. His reason was he got fed up with those internal sounds that he had bought over the years and some that he had bought recently. They cost few hundred to few thousand ringgit each and he has so many of them in his collection. He had bought them locally and from neighboring countries.

This time he wanted to buy me lunch and at the same time I could pass him the new Internal sounds that I had specially made for him. The last time I met up with him was early last year that was 1 year ago. He complained “James to buy you lunch also very hard”. So this time I can’t delay our meeting anymore. For friendship this time I drove to Bidor just to meet him.

“James I am already at the Pun Chun restaurant. Where are you?”

“Mr. L, I am just at the corner parking my car”.

“Hello James… how are you? I heard that you are doing very well...”

“Ok …lah.. a bit busy now.”

“Mr.L, your bhs are also doing very well also what”

“Not bad lah James, the 2 oldest Bhs are doing good the rest is catching up. I have to thank you for inventing Love potion”.

“Don’t mention it lah. Every time I see you, there is always good news…ha…ha… Why do you need the internal sound so urgently? If I am not mistaken you have got plenty of sounds already.”

“James I am using few new internal sounds that claimed to be the bests in my few new Bhs. My friends and many sifus said the more Babies sound in it the better it is. They said the Best Internal sound should contain as many babies sound as possible and no other mature bird sounds in it. After using it in my new Bhs it doesn’t seemed to work and the population and nests didn’t increase as I have expected. ”

This is not the first time I heard this. I have received numerous calls from readers asking whether I have internal sounds that contain 100% babies sound or just plain babies sound with little of other mature birds sounds. My reply was no and they were disappointed.

Like what I had always explained think and look for fact and factual.

To understand this, it is very simple. Go and visit Bhs that have few thousand nests and listen to the internal sound, the live sound, you would understand why 100% baby’s sounds don’t works. (Well I guess not many have the chances to do so)

In a birds colony system no way thru birds communication swiftlets only use 1 single type of sound or few sounds in the Bhs. A well occupied Bh that has thousand of nests consist of all birds from young to old and as well as babies making different kind noise and sounds as they communicate. The internal sound is produced by these residents. It is busy and lively enviroment. It is just like a Market environment that show business activities and population.

Imagine if you go to the Market and all you could hear is only babies crying sounds, would you want to shop further? Simple logic the answer is “NO” you might run away and never return.

This too applies to Bh. If the Internal sound consist of only few sounds perhaps only babies sounds or combined with one or two distinctive adults sound it won’t be that attractive. The growth will be slow. If it is 100% babies sound then it is even worst.

The internal sound should consist of mixture of varieties of different birds’ sounds from young to old. It shouldn’t be restricted to only baby sound as far as the internal sound concerned. The percentage of each sound that contains (mixed) in the whole internal sound is subjected to the need of the person who is doing the mixing. His understanding of birds’ sound communication and experiences influence the result of the finished internal sound.

The whole objective is to create an environment of old successful Bh so that the It could attract as many Swiftlets as possible to stay and to make nests at the shorter time. In other words a new Bh should sound like an old successful Bhs and an old Bh should sound like an extraordinary successful Bh.

Similarly this applies to Rh, Temp, Darkness,etc. All are to create an environment that is like by Swiftlets.

If the internal sound doesn’t suit or it doesn’t sound like a good environment that has plenty of birds’ populations then it won’t attract birds to stay.

If your birds population and nests growth doesn’t increase as much as you expected then it is time to change the internal sound. But make sure you change the right internal sound otherwise it makes no different.

Not all internal sounds are the same. It’s just like the songs we listen from the Radio. Not all tone and voices of the singers are the same. And not all songs are nice to listen. Only the selected few would be at top of the Chart.

After meeting up with Mr.L for lunch and a short discussion I have to be back in Klang to collect some Bh items for my reader from K.Bharu.
