我不鼓励人们卖燕子蛋和非常不赞成那些在收获燕窝的时候把燕子蛋扔掉。这是完全不人道。他们以保护自己的燕屋农场为名，把燕子蛋扔掉。

"Do You Have Swiftlet Eggs for Sales?" How To Buy Swiftlet Egg

Someone called me last week. " James do you sell Swiftlets eggs? I need them urgently!"

My instant reply was  "NO". First thing that struck my mind was...."Is the situation so bad that there were no more Swiftlets in the sky to attract that he has to resort to cross fostering?" Or he is so unskillful that he can't attract any Swiftlet to his Swiftlet farm".

I don't encourage people selling Swiftlets eggs and strongly again those whose throw away eggs during harvesting. It is totally inhuman. There are throwing the eggs in the name of protecting their Swiftlet farms from competitions.

By doing this in long run the whole Swiftlet population of an area  would decline. History has shown, the Jawa Island was facing the same problem many years ago forcing Swiftlet farmers to venture to new places to establish new farming. From Jawa many moved to places like Pontianak, Samarinda, Balik Papan, to name few.

Before you buy Swiftlets eggs do you know how to handle them prior to putting them in your Swiftlet farm? Many would have thought easy, same as buying chicken eggs from Super Market and bring them home. Well it is not as easy as you think.

Since we are talking about Swiftlets eggs, well let me give you some tips on how to select Swiftlet eggs. I had learned all these through my painstaking experience. At that time, many years back  no one  would willing to teach or give tips about selecting Swiftlets eggs. I guess even now ....except me ha ha ha ha....

Firstly, you much know how to identify and differentiate them. If you are not familiar with what you are buying you may ended up buying the wrong thing.

Swiftlet eggs are white in color with a slight light blueish tone. Seriti eggs are are white with a little of deep brown spots. Those who go to Indonesia to buy Swiftlet eggs must me be careful or you may ended up with many Seriti eggs. If the seller knows  that you know very little about Swiftlet eggs selection they would mix the Swiftlet eggs with other eggs.

Select those that  are in good oval shape. Odd shaped or oversize ones shouldn't be selected. The shell surface should be smooth and without hair line cracks. We do bring along  magnifying glasses  to check the eggs. Eggs with sediments and dirt normally wouldn't hatch.

In order to know the quality of the eggs a flashlight process is needed. In old days people are using candle. It is to see the inside of the eggs. The egg yolk should be in the center  and stable. There shouldn't be blood spots inside. Those with blood spots would have a lower success rate of hatching.

Well there are more to it but I guess that is enough for you
 to learn in order not to let someone fooling you.

HI-Nest B-52 is not an ordinary Amplifier. It was created and designed to play high quality Swiftlet sounds. As I had written in my previous articles before , I wanted an Amplifier than could produce sharp and high quality Swiftlet sounds  (frequencies ). B-52 Amplifier is tuned to Swiftlet frequency.

Lately, I've received many calls and emails from my readers regarding sound system in Swiftlet farms .  They want to know how to tune the Hi-Nest B-52 Amplifier and how to use the GS-18 and the TX-20 tweeters effectively with the B-52 Amplifier. They want to attract young birds to stay in their farms. 

Swiftlet sounds come in many different frequencies. The chirping sounds of adult birds are different from those of young birds (chicks), the chirping sound from  Swiftlets laying eggs is different from those that are mating and so on. They have different characteristics, rhythms, pitches,tone, etc. 

All these sounds have different meanings and they are used for communicate with other birds. The pitches and tones are different. If you had listened and studied Swiftlet sounds long enough you would understand the meaning of each sound. Well it is not easy but it can be done and I am a good example of it. I had learned this through my many years of listening and remixing Swiftlet sounds for my customers/readers.

With all these knowledge it really helps in Swiftlet sound editing and remixing. When I make a new Swiftlet sounds, I know which and what sounds should be included in the remix and what shouldn't be included. Here you can't do a guessing game. Any error of including unfamiliar sounds in the remix would chase away birds and deter them from entering the Swiftlet farm.

Tuning and setting the Amplifier for a specific use is very important. HI-Nest B-52 Amplifier can be used for both Internal and External. All you need to do is to have a different setting ( tuning) for each Internal and External.

" How many Amplifiers are needed in a 3 Storey Swiftlet farm?". This is often asked by readers.

Well, my recommendation is 4 Amplifiers. Each floor has one Amplifier to play an Internal sound and one Amplifier for the whole farm to play an External sound. With such formation, in the event, if one of the Internal Amplifiers breakdown the remaining 2 Amplifiers will  be still playing. In such case you don't have to worry about the whole Swiftlet farm is without sound.

"How many Internal Tweeters should a 3 storey Swiftlet farm have?"  It depends on the size of a Swiftlet farm, also it depends on the design of the nesting plank. Some Nesting plank formation have more vertical planks. Some have smaller space between planks and so on. As a rule of thumb, for a size of 20x60ft averagely it should have 80-120 tweeters. Then again all subjected to the Planking design. Remember too few it won't attract birds to stay and build nests. Too many it will chase away birds as it confuses them.

如果你鄰居的燕屋农场的收穫每個月有幾十公斤而你的燕屋农场幾乎很难達到100个燕窝，你会怎麼辦? 你是否只是坐着等待運氣的到來或您会做些什麼?

這個燕屋農場的主人已經坐着等待奇跡的出現很多年了，但是奇跡永遠没有到來。有趣的是，他鄰居的燕屋农场起步比他还早一些，但是現在它是這領域里最成功的燕屋农场之一。4層楼的商店位於小鎮的中心。最高的两樓被改成了燕屋农场。

这个燕屋农场有很多錯誤和問題存在。以下只是整個問題的一小部分。还有很多的问题我沒把它放在這裡。这只是一些非常基本的东西燕屋主必须知道的，如果他还想要繼續在养燕行业。

1) 入口洞是太大了。不一定越大越好。大多數人擁護大的入口洞容易让燕子飛進進出。但是要銘記，大的入口洞也有其局限性。乾旱空氣能輕易流入燕屋农场使整個内部环境不穩定。其他相關的問題是掠食动物，小偷，等等)

2) 光线很容易能滲透到燕屋农场使整个燕屋农场变的太亮。以上的照片为了打擊太亮，环绕区都塗成黑色。如果小的入口洞將解決問題而不需要把环绕区涂上黑漆。入口洞和整个燕屋農場的所有部分之間的都有相關性的。对入口洞有所調整或改变會影響整個內部环境，因此，整个内部设计 (分區) 必須重新調整如果改了入口洞的大小。

大部分的人將會效仿，把环绕区涂上黑漆却不知道反效果。在参关过上千的燕屋农场之後，我發現許多燕屋农场的环绕区都塗上黑漆。它已成為一種規範、 標準和必須要有塗上黑漆。

它是被誤解。誰說燕屋农场都必須漆上黑漆呢? 我可以告訴你並不是所有的环绕区或作窝區必須漆上黑漆。只有當有必要時，在完成後所有的努力，我們仍然不能減少的光线的密度。

2) 互连洞太小了，位置在錯誤的地方。尺寸大小是約3x5尺。我知道為什麼互连洞是这么建。它是为了減少光线的密度，因为入口洞太大了。

之前那位顧問應該把入口洞做的較小。通過這樣做，他可以選擇較大的互连洞。大的互连洞可以让燕子輕鬆地飞到低楼。

3) 從觀察，多數的燕窝被修造在樓梯口。這个地方的温度和光密度都是很好。(不太暗也不太亮)。如果整个作窝区可以都重複，都好像这个楼梯口的條件，那么這個燕屋农场可以收穫很多公斤的燕窝了。由此可見，這个燕屋农场是可以拯救，可以轉身的。

4) 所有的角落應裝上壁角板。年輕的燕子喜歡作窝在角落，因為它們的爪子可以抓住木板和壁角板之間的間隙行。

沒有壁角板就只有一個差距線如以上照片所示。壁角板它創建2条差距线。許多人聲稱壁角板防止燕子作燕窝。它不是真實的。這是一個神話。事實上，壁角板有助於提振燕窝增長。

5) 太少的高音喇叭。當我提到之前，一切都必須在平衡。太少也不會吸引燕子作燕窝。太多的高音喇叭把燕子混淆了。对于這个燕屋农场它絕對是太少的高音揚聲器。高音喇叭不花多少錢。如果你可以花數萬零吉，將它轉換成燕屋农场，花幾百零吉的高音揚聲器是什麼。

我猜这个決定不是來自燕屋主，正如他所知甚少关于養燕，所以一定是來自為他建造燕屋农场的人。它是完全關于節約成本。看来这个顧問似乎更關注為他的客戶節省成本比建立一個成功的燕農場。

6) 高音喇叭都不安裝在角落。它們被安裝在离角落幾寸的距離。如果你看過我以前的文章中的照片，你會注意到大多數的燕窝建在角落的高音喇叭上。它們喜歡造窝在高音喇叭上面。為什麼这个燕屋农场不这么做?

7) 到处都有蟑螂。許多的蟑螂还在盡情享用燕窩。它們甚至在白天的時間在外面。我確信在晚上有上千的蟑螂出來。

當被問及蟲害控制时，燕屋主回答:"那是什麼?我們真正的需要吗。我從來沒有聽說过"。

8) 錯誤的高音喇叭形成。它是錯誤的，把所有的高音喇叭都安装在面對一個方向。进去你的燕屋農場，然后自己觀察里面的燕子飛行。所有的燕子飛在一個圆圈，不管是顺時鐘或反時鐘。

當他們在盤旋的地方，在圈子另外一个方向就是它們開始的方向。它們的頭將面对着另外一个方向。为了吸引它們留下來和做燕窝，最重要的是有一些高音喇叭朝向不同的方向。(參考請參閱之前的文章，對音響系統形成)。

9) 有許多燕子在燕屋农场中玩，但是它們不會留下和做燕窝。很可惜看到這一點。燕窝都是很薄和變了形状。一些長型，一些未完成的，因为它們在做完之前就離開了。這些燕窝在这个燕屋农场可以有它的故事。它指示燕屋农场的條件很差。只是看看那些燕窝我就知道屋内环境是出了问题...完全出错。

燕子曾过要留下和做燕窝，因为我親眼目睹了一大批燕子進入燕屋农场，但目前狀況阻止了它們這樣做。

10) 內部的溫度很容易在陰天達到32C。想像一下在炎熱和乾燥的一天，温度会热到那里......35..37..40C...?

11) 這個燕屋农场沒有喷雾器。我看到这些燕窝的形狀就已經知道濕度是很低。我不需要用濕度計来檢查。燕窝也表明了一切。

很可惜，看到很多未完成的燕窝。燕屋主很幸運。对于地点他有完全的优势，但是不知道如何利用。

現在我需要出一個改造計畫来把它轉回來。在评估它的屋内和屋外环境之后。我很有信心，在几个月內燕窝的增長會增加一倍，。

燕子在那里已經有數千上万的，现在最重要的是使它們留下來。这是一个金矿但是却沒有人知道怎麼去开发。

Sitting On a Swiftlet Farming Gold Pot - Kuala Lipis, Pahang

What would you do if your neighbor's Swiftlet farm is harvesting tens of kilograms of nests per month while your Swiftlet farm hardly reaching 100 nests? Would you just sit and wait for luck to come or do something about it? 

The owner of this Swiftlet farm had sat and waited for many years for miracle to happen but, miracle never came. Interestingly, his neighbor's farm started not long before his and now it is one of the most successful Swiftlet farms in that area. A 4 storey shop-lot located at the middle of the town. Two upper floors were converted into Swiftlet farm.

The owner didn't do anything until his friend approached him. He explained to him, something needed to be done otherwise the number of nets would remains the same. The owner knows very little about Swiftlet farming. He started it because everyone was doing it. It was many years ago when Swiftlet farming was "talk of the town". Those days one kilogram of raw nest could fetch from rm3.8- 6k per kg. It was called the " White Gold" then. 

I had postponed this visit for many months as I was travelling extensively in Indonesia.

I knew I could not postpone it anymore as calls and messages came in everyday reminded me of the appointment. Well there I was, one beautiful morning at Kuala Lipis, Pahang.

This small town is not unfamiliar to me. I had built quite a number of Swiftlet farms here with many hitting more than 4000 nests now.  I guess this is why I was invited to save this farm.

Kuala  Lipis, a place with abundant green. Food source for Swiftlet is plenty. The sky is full of Swiftlets everyday. One could never go wrong building a Swiftlet farm here. The only thing that one needs to worry is how well he had built it.

There are many errors and problems in this Swiftlet farm. Below are just a fraction of the whole problems.There are more which I didn't put it up here. These are the very basic ones that the owner should know if he wants to continue to be in the Swiftlet farming business.

1)  The Entrance- hole is too big. Not necessarily the bigger the better. Most people championed big Entrance-hole cited easier for Swiftlets to fly in and out. Bear in mind big Entrance-hole has its limitation too. Drought air could  easily flow into the farm making the whole Micro unstable. Other related problems are predators, thief, etc )

2) Light could easily penetrate into the Swiftlet farm making it too bright. As in the above picture   to counter the brightness the Roving area is painted black. A smaller Entrance-hole would have solved the problem instead of painting the Roving black. There are correlations between Entrance- hole and all parts of the Swiftlet farm. Adjustments or changes to the Entrance- hole would affect the Micro thus the whole Internal Design ( partitions) need to be readjusted if the size of the Entrance- hole is altered.

Most would follow suit,  painting their Roving areas black without knowing the set back. After having visited thousand of  Swiftlet farms, I discovered  many Swiftlet farm had their Roving areas painted black. It has become a norm, a standard and a must to have them painted black. 

It is all misinterpreted. Who says Swiftlet farm must be painted black? I can tell you not all Roving areas or Nesting areas must be painted black. Only when it is necessary, when all efforts had been done and we still unable to reduce the light density. 

2) The Inter-floor is too small and located at the wrong area. The size is about 3 x 5 ft. I knew why the Inter-hole was built this way. It was to reduce the light density as the Entrance -hole was too big. 

The previous consultant should have made a smaller Entrance-hole. By doing so he could opt for a bigger Inter-hole. Big Inter-hole allows Swiftlets to maneuver easily into the lower floor Roving areas.

3) From the observation most nests were built at the staircase area. This area is cooling and the light density is good. (Not too dark nor too bright). If all  Nesting areas in this farm could duplicate the same condition as the staircase area then this Swiftlet farm could be harvesting many kilograms of nests. It shows this Swiftlet farm could be saved and turn around.

4)  All corners should be fitted with Corner Boards. Young birds like to build nests at corners as their claws could  hold  onto the gap lines between the plank and the Corner Board. 

Without Corner Board there is only one  gap line as can be seen in the above pictures. With Corners Board it creates 2  gap lines. Many claimed that Corner Board prevents Swiftlets from building nests. It is not true. It is a myth. In fact Corner Board helps to boost up nests growth. 

5) Too few tweeters. As I had mentioned before, everything must be in balance. Too few it won't attract Swiftlets to build nests. Too many it confuses the birds. For this Swiftlet farm it is definitely too few tweeters. Tweeter doesn't cost much. If one could spend tens of thousands of ringgit to convert it into a Swiftlet farm what is few hundred ringgit for tweeters.

I guess the decision didn't come from the owner as he knows very little about Swiftlet farming. It came from the one who built the farm for him. It's all about cost saving. It seems the consultant concerns more about cost saving  than building a successful Swiftlet farm for his customer.

6) Tweeters are not installed at the corners. They are installed few inches away from the corner. If you have seen pictures from my previous articles you would notice most nests are built at corners with Tweeters. They like building nests right above the tweeters. Why this Swiftlet farm is not doing it? 

7) There are cockroaches everywhere. Many feasting on the nests. They are out even during the day time.  I am sure they will come out in thousand during night.

When asked about pest control the owner replied " What is that? Do we really need that. I have never heard of it".

8) Wrong Tweeter formation. It is wrong to have all tweeters facing one direction. Go to you Swiftlet farm and observe it yourself when there are birds flying inside. All Swiftlets fly in a circular motion either clock wise or counter clock wise.

When they are circling an area, at the opposite of the circle where they started. Their heads will be facing the opposite direction. In order to attract them to stay and build nest it is important to have some Tweeters facing different direction. ( for reference please refer to previous articles on sound system formation)

9) There were many birds playing inside the farm but, they wouldn't stay and build nests. It is sad to see this. Nests are thin and out of shape. Some elongated, some unfinished as they left half way building it. The nests in this Swiftlet farm tell tales. It indicates the poor condition of the Swiftlet farm. By looking at those nests I knew the Micro is out...totally out.

Swiftlets had tried to stay and build nests as I had witnessed a large number of Swiftlet entering the farm but the current condition has prevented them to do so.

10) Internal temperature easily reaching 32C on a cloudy day. Imagine how hot would it be on a hot and dry day.... 35..37..40C..?

11) There is no humidifier in this Swiftlet farm. By looking at the shape of the nests I already knew  the humidity is very low. I don't have to check with a hygrometer. The nests showed everything.

It is sad to see many uncompleted nests. The owner is lucky. Location wise he has all the advantages but, doesn't know what to do with it.

Now I have to come out with a revamp plan to turn it around. After the evaluation of  the Micro and Macro.  I am very confident within a couple of months the nests growth would increase to double.

The Swiftlets are already  there by thousands it is a matter of making them to stay.  It is a gold pot and no one knows what to do with it all this while.

Cyberjaya :馬來西亞標準部正在为可食燕窝生產標準和試驗的方法，確定消費的硝酸鹽含量是在安全的水平，滿足中國市場的嚴格的出口要求。

Datuk Fadilah Baharin 說该部门和衛生部正在開展全面的研究。她補充說，新的標準預計将在明年年底推出。

她說高硝酸鹽含量可能造成嚴重的健康風險，例如，癌症。而且中國已經禁止進口未加工的燕窩從馬來西亞前以涉嫌高硝酸鹽含量。

然而，出口的燕窩是经过加工的形式或可食果凍或飲料 (瓶中) 出口不受影響，在採訪中說。目前，只有50%的燕窝養殖公司能夠向中國出口它们的燕窩，她說。

她補充說，"通过採用標準，我們預計，起到90%的公司可以出口他們的產品。她說: 由馬來西亞標準起发的標準是在2010年开始的，而且还是世界唯一的。

三年前開始的原始燕窩為身份驗證、 品質、 分級、 包裝和標籤標準的發展，她說。

她說: 除了中國，馬來西亞养燕行業也針對新的市場包括香港、 日本和義大利，以利用不斷增長的需求。Bernama

New standards for safe nitrate levels in bird’s nest

CYBERJAYA: The Department of Standards Malaysia is developing edible bird’s nests production standards and test methods to determine the safe levels of nitrate content for consumption and to meet stringent export requirements for China’s market.

Director-general Datuk Fadilah Baharin said a comprehensive study was being conducted by the department along with the Health Ministry.

The new standards are expected to be introduced by the end of next year, she added.

She said high nitrate content could pose serious health risks such as cancer and China had banned the import of unprocessed swiftlet nests from Malaysia before for allegedly having high nitrate content.

However, the export of bird’s nests in processed forms or ready-to-eat jelly or drinks (in bottles) was not affected, she said in an interview.

Currently, only 50% of swiftlet farming companies were able to export bird’s nests to China, she said.

She added that “with the introduction of the standards, we expect that up to 90% of the companies could export their products.”

Fadilah said the standard swiftlet farming initiated by Standards Malaysia since 2010 were the first of its kind in the world.

The development of standards of raw bird’s nests for authentication, quality, grading, packaging and labelling started three years ago, she said.

She said besides China, the Malaysian swiftlet nest industry also targeted new markets including Hong Kong, Japan and Italy to capitalise on rising demand. — Bernama

This pops up suddenly . We haven't heard anything regarding regulations, standards, guidelines, etc for a long time. It has fanned out. It seems that no one cares anymore about Swiftlet farming when the price of Raw birds nests dived below Rm 1200.00 per kg. There is no more lucrative money in the pot to attract those that are greedy.

It was totally silent and quiet for couple of years. Swiftlet farmers are in peace for a couple of years. A real peaceful situation. No one comes and "kacau". Many Swiftlet farms turned into Motels. Nobody is interested in Swiftlet farming. 

What happened to the RFID? The bar-code? licensing? ( if I could remember)..........all disappeared and became history. There is no more fast money to make from Swiftlet farming industry.

Suddenly regulations and standards pop up again. Why? You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. Guess what?

Raw nests price has gone up as the stock in China is running low. As soon as the price goes up ...people smell money and they know they could make fast buck. Trust me if the price of raw nests dived again I could assure you all regulations and standards will disappear again.....varnish in thin air without us noticing it. Malaysia Boleh.
