A TRUE LOVE POTION and HI-NEST SWIFTLET FARM
Friday, October 30, 2015
A TRUE LOVE POTION and HI-NEST SWIFTLET FARM
This is a 100% Love Potion Swiftlet farm which means it only uses Love Potion ( from starting sound until now). It has Love Potion Drippers in all Nesting areas and they drip into the Humidifiers respectively.
A small piece of black plastic net is placed at the Corner boards to help young Swiftlet to hang on them to build nest. All Corners board are sprayed with Love Potion every 2-3 weeks once. The humidity in the Swiftlet farm is at 85-90% at all time. It is hard to achieve that but he managed to do it. (Of course there are ways to do it).
This Swiftlet farm only uses 3 sets of HI-Nest Amplifier. Some may ask "why only use 3 amplifiers not 6 amplifiers shifting them alternately every 12 hours".
Well ...because we are talking about quality here, not quantity. Firstly we didn't overload the Amplifiers. Secondly Hi-Nest Amplifiers are using Toshiba capacitors. They produce better sound quality that tuned to Swiftlet frequency. HI-NEST B52 Amplifier is the first Amplifier that is specially tuned and made for Swiftlet sound.
All tweeters are of Hi-Nest GS18. The combination of HI-nest B52 amplifiers and GS18 tweeters produce good quality smoothing sound that calm birds. When Swiftlets are calm they would make cleaner and better shape nests. The clean, white and good shaped nests in the pictures is the result of what we used in the farm and how we managed it.
It is has been proven again and again. If we can do it so can you. It is a matter of what you use and applying the right technique. This is not magic or myth, it can be quantified and backed by data and charts and pictures.
As can be observed from the pictures these nests are super white and they are built at the corners. It indicates they are not from old birds. This proved that even young Swiftlets could make good quality nests if the environment of the farm were created to suit them.
There are many stages of managing a Swiftlet farm.
1) Initially when we first started the sound our objectives were to attract as many Swiftlets as possible to play at our farms.
2) Once we had acquired that, we want them to stay.
3) Then we want them to make nests. More nests.
4) Retain the young birds as we want the growth to increase both the birds and nests.
5) Then maintain and to increase the nests quality as it fetches better price.
6) Whiter nests, bigger nests, cleaner nests.
7) Manage to maintain 3,4,5 and 6.
There are so many stages here , where do your Swiftlet farms stand?

選擇正確木板的重要性 THE IMPORTANCE OF SELECTING THE RIGHT WOOD NESTING PLANK

THE IMPORTANCE OF SELECTING THE RIGHT WOOD NESTING PLANK
I did an experiment couple of months ago on how fungus affects wood, and had totally forgotten about it after soaking the planks into the water. I supposed to take them out after 3 weeks, dry them and compare to see the differences.
This was to show my group of readers the importance of using good quality Nesting plank. Once the Nesting planks had been installed and the external and internal sound are played .There is no turning back. You wouldn't want to dismantle all the planks, remove them and change it. Time, money and effort all wasted. That is not all, if there were birds inside the Swiftlet farm, they will fly away and may not return.
There are two types of wood here. The high end Meranti which is brown color ( note it is not red). Good Meranti is in brownish color. Don't mistaken them for red color. The other one is a common wood which light in color, often used by many Swiftlet farms as they are cheap and easily available. They can be obtained with or without groove. The one in the picture is without groove. I got this piece of plank from my reader.
He cited his Sifu asked him to use this light color wood as it is easier for birds to hang on them. The Sifu also encourage NO grooves to be made on all planks.
To me this is a pure "No common sense" teaching.
Both were dunked into water for more than 2 months and later let to dry for 2 months.(I supposed to take them out from a pail of water after a month but, I'd forgotten about it).
After drying, it could be clearly seen the light colored wood has mold and fungi on them. Black thick residue and powdery whitish patches. I am sure you wouldn't want this on your Nesting plank.
As for the high quality Meranti there are no mold and fungi on them other than the dried water markings. This is absolutely astonishing. One would argue that the condition in Swiftlet farm is different from dunking planks into water. Well for your information, the Swiftlet farm condition is 10 times worse than dunking planks into water. As the Swiftlet Farm's internal environment is constantly dark, it prevents sun light( UV) from reaching the Nesting area, this encourages mold and fungi to grow. Furthermore with a constant 24/7 humid environment the white patches would spread faster
The water has little affect on the dark color Meranti. All could be seen are only water markings. This Meranti has been treated and Kiln dried. It has high density structure that prevent water adsorption. High density woods have smaller and finer pores. It is hard for fungi to grow on them.
This type of plank could last many years and you don't have to worry about fungus problem for many years to come.
The worse fear is, when your Swiftlet farm starts to have good result and the birds population is increasing and you discovered that some planks are infested with mold and fungus.
This experiment clearly shows " choosing the right Meranti wood is important".
Hope this information would help those who are still can't decide on which and what Nesting Plank to be used in their Swiftlet farms.

Attract Haze Affected Migration Swiftlets
The Haze is getting worse each day. Some areas reaching more 250 API (Air Pollution Index). Schools were ordered to close. People are complaining, sore throat, running nose, teary eyes, etc that caused by the haze. Aren't human stronger than birds? If human is badly affect what about Swiftlets which are smaller mammals.?
If the Haze could cause sickness to human then it would be many times the effect on animals.
There are less Swiftlets roaming the sky now. Swiftlets rely on their sight to hunt insects. This is one of the most important factors of survival. The Haze affect the Swiftlets visibility in hunting. Most if not all would have migrated to areas that has no Haze.
That is why population of Swiftlets as whole in decreasing in areas that are affected by the Haze. Swiftlets are abandoning their homes ( Swiftlet farms). This is not new, it had happened before. One good example was during the 80's. Where the outbreak of forest fire ( Crop clearing fire) in Indonesia affected thousands of Swiftlet farms in Indonesia. During that time, huge migration of Swiftlet started. They fly to Parit Buntar, Penang, Matang, to name few. This is how the Swiftlet farming industry in Malaysia went to full swing, benefiting from the effect of haze in Indonesia.
It was a good time then, birds were more than Swiftlet farms. A simply built Swiftlet farm could easily attract few thousand birds to stay. Swiftlet farms were mushrooming everywhere. Raw nests was selling above Rm 5000.00 per kg at one time. Those were the days of great Swiftlet farming.
Swiftlet visibility is affected, their food sources are depleting. With the serious smoke around it may kills all insects. Insects are invertebrates. They fear smoke. Any small amount of smoke would chase them away. With such hazy condition they don't reproduce. Some go into hibernation and don't reproduce. So there will be less and less insects around for the Swiftlets to feed on.
As it goes they will migrate to areas that have more food sources ( Insects). You would see less Swiftlets coming back to Swiftlet farms now.
For those Swiftlet farms that are located in areas that are less affected by the Haze should make all effort to make use of the golden opportunity.
Make sure your Swiftlets are every ready to attract these groups of migration Swiftlets. There is a saying " Golden opportunity doesn't come easily". So don't lose this opportunity.
During the migration some Swiftlet farms located in areas that are less effected by haze would experience sudden increase in nests ( double, triple) which many don't seem to realize and unable to explain.
Well how do you make use of this opportunity? There are many ways to do it.....tips....change new sound, use good aroma to attract birds to stay ( Love Potion)...and .......more
Not the normal external sound. A special migration external sound that features Swiftlets flocking together. A sound specially made for this purpose to attracts these migrating Swiftlets. This special sound attracts and guides Swiftlets to fly into the entrance hole when the fly past your farms.
If you are interested in this SMES ( Special Migration External Sound ) you may contact me.
So be prepared don't lose this opportunity. This is the opportunity that may increase your Swiftlet farm's population.

Zinc Sheet to Reduce Heat - Sabah
They are located not far from the town at a Kampong area.
What attracted my attention was how these two Swiftlet farms were built. Interestingly the owners do have some good knowledge of Swiftlet farming. It was done with the simplest way and cost effective.
The gaps of 1 ft between the walls and Zinc sheets works as a channel for wind to move freely. The fast circulation of air cool down the wall thus reduce the farms' temperature.
I have seen many people doing the same but, often the gaps are too small to be effectively to reduce the temperature of the wall.
C channel is used as frames to hold the Zinc sheets. There are ventilated bricks on wall of the ceiling. This indicated heat is a major problem here.
Well designed, a staircase is built, from outside to access to the farm. There are quite a lot of birds playing outside during my visit at 3.00 pm.
I am sure within a short period of time these Swiftlet farms would have lots of nests.
Good Swiftlet farming All.
