Selfish, jealousy, envy, greedy, etc are part of life. We can not run away from it other than accepting it and making sure all these unhealthy and bad behaviors doesn’t influenced us or not in us.

Anything, every where, any businesses, etc that included Swiftlet farming can not escape from such act of bad behavior. Luckily not all farmers are like that only a handful. But this handful is enough to put the whole Swiftlets industry in jeopardy. It is just like “A drop of ink in a bucket of milk”, imagine how the bucket of milk would look like afterward?

Not long a go a reader of mine had told me. He explained, before he ventured into the Swiftlet farming business there is a good friend of him (a childhood friend till now) who had invested in Swiftlet farming had always discouraged him not to go into this business.

Sighted, Swiftlet farming is a waste of time, the risk is too high and the return was too slow. He even cried if he knew he wouldn’t have got involved and if given a chance he wouldn’t want to touch this Swiftlet farming business.

Every time they meet after months or years this was his message to my reader. “I am telling you the truth since you are my best friend never touch this business”.

.

.

As the conversation goes on it seemed that this best friend of my reader accidentally revealed how he had acquire more farms from 1 farm 3 years ago and now 5 farms.

5 years later when they meet again the best friend of my reader still cried about his poor investment in Swiftlet farming and still strongly discourage my reader to get involve.

This time the best friend of my readers had a total of 10 farms. His best friend still cried Swiftlet farming is a poor and lousy investment. A year later my reader heard from his best friend’s uncle now he has 14 farms and more farms coming which under construction.

What a good friend my reader had? If Swiftlet farming is a lousy investment why my reader’s best friend who had always advise him not to touch this business but himself had invested from 1 farm to 14 farms in 8 years time.

Some people just don’t want others to get involve, as the saying goes “more men fewer shares less men more share”.

Even though the birds in the sky don’t belong to them yet if you manage to capture a pair to your farm they will feel uneasy. Yes, there are these types of people around. There are plenty of them in Swiftlet farming. Beware of them.

Some will strongly advise you not to use certain equipments or products that have been proven in their farms that produced superb results in enhancing nests growth and bird population. To them what is good is only for their farms not yours. They won’t want to see you having a successful farm. Their mentality is that why should I share my idea and advise you? What reward would I get? Even you are their so called best friend. Think...About it!

As long they could prevent you from acquiring knowledge , prevent you from knowing more, prevent you from using the right product and equipment, prevent you from using the right Aroma, prevent you from using a good sound and the list can goes on they are happy.

If your farm turned up better than theirs and you are better than them in terms of knowledge or whatsoever then it will be back fire.

They won’t tell you that their cd sound could attract thousands of birds even if it does because you may as him to duplicate a copy for you.

They won’t tell you what Aroma they are using even if you accidentally saw them bought it. To counter what you have seen they will criticize that Aroma to the max to making sure you won’t use it.

Trust me there are many like that in Swiftlet farming. If you had been long enough in Swiftlet farming you will get what I mean.

After having said all these make sure we don’t follow what they did. As farm as I am concerned let them have all those bad and unhealthy behaviors. They can have it all if they want.

Dinner with my Readers. " Do We need To Paint our Farms Black?"

Mr. Gee of Seremban who had a farm of 1 year old had always wanted to meet up with me but I had turned him down many times because of my tight schedule. Last weekend he was in town again and called me. I guess I have to meet up with him this time not to disappoint him.

Furthermore at the same time I had few readers from Miri (Mr. Chai and friends) who were in town purposely to meet me to discuss about the construction of a 30x 100ft Stand Alone. Since all of them were in town I decided to group them all and take them to Teluk Gong for Seafood dinner.

Do we really need to paint all our farms black? Is it a must? These were the questions thrown at me during the Seafood dinner.

“The answer is NO, not necessary Unless required’.

.

The reason of painting black paint in farms is to make the farm darker and to reduce the density of light”. It is a must? Well the answer says it all to reduce light density.

It is not a must. If a farm is being design properly where light factors have been considered properly prior to designing then painting the farm black is not necessary.

On the other hand if the farm is not being designed properly which light is the problem then one should paint the farm black.

Bear in mind not the whole farm should be painted black, only certain/selected areas need to be painted black if it’s required.

Painting a farm black is remedy works. If the farm is being done or designed properly then it doesn’t need to be painted black.

What had transpired this problem? The lack understanding and poor knowledge of how a good Swiftlets farm should be build.

In most cases to owners and consultants black paint is part of the construction and it is a must. The farms are not completed when the owners and consultants don’t see black paint on all walls. This had become a norm and standard in the Swiftlets farming Industry.

You Want Birds but Not Nest, Why???

Mr. Loke called me and asked, James I am seeing less birds playing outside my farm. Initially when I changed the sound there are lots of birds playing now it is getting lesser.

Where do you get the sound from? Mr. Loke replied I bought from someone claimed that the sound was the best in the market.

I asked him do you know there are many types of sound now available in the market. He was muted and replies I never thought of that all I knew was good Cd sound can attracts lots of birds and poor Cd can’t attracts birds.

I explained to him there are mating sound, fighting sound, colony sound, stress sound, etc……some of these sound are used for certain purposes and shouldn’t be mixed into a Cd without knowing the consequences.

I explained, nowadays there are many different sounds being mixed into one Cd to attract birds to come and play. Being market driven by the perception of many less knowledgeable farmers “the more birds come to play the better” had resorted many to include or mixed the fighting sound, stress sound, etc into the Cd sound. It is being used as a back ground sound or a short clip and for those who are inexperience in Cd sound hardly could notice this.

These types of Cds have been passed around in the market and being duplicated for resale. The problem is that there are some who are selling it didn’t even notice that the Cd sound is mixed with unpleasant sound that could bring harm in long run to the farm.

The rule of thumb for less knowledgeable farmers (even some experienced ones) on sound is that as long the Cd sound could attract large number of birds then it is consider a good sound

This is not the case in Swiftlets farming and I am sure there are many who had heard there are farms that don’t even have sound that have thousand of nests.

Playing a correct sound in the farm is very important. What we want are nests and nests …..Yes plenty of them not birds that come and play and once it is getting dark all of them disappeared.

A good sound should attract birds to stay and make nest. No point of having few hundred birds entering the farm everyday and after 6 months they only made few nests.

My advice goes for a soothing sound you won’t wrong! Soothing sound encourage nests building NOT birds playing.

It is common that Swiftlets Farm’s owners worry about their new completed farms. “Would my farm attracts Swiftlets to build nests?” This is a common reaction as they had invested in this field I am sure they want to know the money they had invested would be on the right path towards generating income in near future.

Simple…. As long there is a gradual improvement over time it shows that the farm is in the right path.

New bird shit spot.

When there is increasing in number of bird shit spots it shows birds are coming to the farm. As the size of the shit spot and the number of spot increase it mean more swiftlets are staying.

Number of nests:

As long there are new nests and new nests marking which gradual increased it show the micro is acceptable.

Number of Swiftlets staying:

.

Bird count of birds entering the farm in the late evening and birds leaving farm in the dawn if the number increase then it shows the farm is on right path.

The above is only a fraction of many indicators that would help farmers to understand and to know whether their farms are on the right track.

Darkness in Farm

Few readers had called me and asked how important is the intensity of light or the darkest in the farm compared to other micros.

As I had mentioned before every parts of the micro is important and we can't take it lightly. All must be at it perfection! If any one of the other micros is bad it will affect the other.

If you had entered many successful farms you will notice that there are many nests in both bright and dark areas. So what is the appropriate darkness in farm?

There should be areas of bright and dark in farm. In such the birds could have choice to choose whichever areas they wanted.

A gradually bright to dark is very important in farm. Young birds would build nests at the brighter area as they could access in and out of the farm easily.

Experienced birds could build nests everywhere mostly deeper in the farm as they had developed their echolocation ability. So darkness is not an issue here.

This is why most authors of swiftlet farming books would advise bigger entrance hole for new farm and later when population increases the size of the hole be gradually reduce to small. This would reduce the intensity of light in farm thus making it darker. So a very dark farm is not an issue for old farm.

This answered the questions of readers asking “why some successful farms are so dark and some farms are so bright?

It would be wise to have a meter or instrument to check the intensity of light. From here you could write down the Lux recorded in the meter and compare then later if you want to reduce the entrace hole or intended to put up the partition. It will help you to understnat the degree of darkness your farm needed.

Observe The Micro & Macro

Why birds abandoned their nests that they had spent weeks to build? There are many reasons for this.

Some may argue that it has got nothing to do with the environment because if the environment in not good then the birds would have not built the nests in the first place.
.

They have a point there, bare in mind being Micro or Macro things constantly change. A farm could not remain the same over a long period of time. What was good then could be different now.
.

There are hundred of things that may affect the Micro & Macro example-1) Micro, as the population of birds increased the amount of birds dropping also increase. This would push up the RH in farm. So it changes the Rh. So you see things changed over time. 2) Macro, over the time more developments and more new farms, this affect the food where the Swiftlets feed on.
.

In such challenging environment a farm could not remain the same over time. Somehow a good farm may turn bad if the changes are unnoticed. To counter these changes one has to constantly observe the Micro & Macro.
.

We certainly can’t leave the farm as it is. Any short coming must be rectified immediately. The earlier we noticed the changes the better it is.
.

No point of wait and see this doesn’t help at all. My advice is all farms should have all info recorded. The Temp, Rh, No of new nest & nest making, etc. Any significant changes will tell you that something maybe wrong some where.

You Think your farm is Perfect ?

I received a call from my reader asking for opinion. His farm is located in the north of Selangor. This farm is DIY by him.

“Hi, James I have problems with my farm the birds are not staying and the number of birds that come to play is reducing everyday and they don’t stay”.

“Mr. Y how is the condition of your farm? Is the micro Ok?”

“James, everything is perfect. There is nothing wrong with my farm but the birds just don’t stay.”

The moment Mr. Y says everything is perfect, thru my experiences of having visited countless failed farms I could sense that his farm is not perfect. I am confident to bet with him 1 to 1000 that his farm is not perfect.

There is no smoke if there is no fire. In this case Mr.Y already seen smoke (birds not staying) but he can’t find the fire as he has no experience in where and how to find the fire. If you can’t find the fire how can you put it off? Even you have the best fire extinguisher it is useless.

I prompted him further, how is the design of your farm? Mr. Y replied “I don’t see any problem with my farm as the design is standard one like most”

I was shocked to hear “Standard Design”? I asked myself is there a standard design in Swiftlets Farming…? Ha..ha..ha….ha….(sorry)….ha..ha

As I think further Mr. Y has got a point there on that Standard Design.

I guess his standard design means that his farm was like most of the farms out there.. What he didn’t notice or realize was most farms out there are failed farms (80% failed). So his farm’s design is like most farms out there therefore his farm was designed to be failed.

As I was writing his farm is already failed otherwise he wouldn’t had seek for solution.

Why Mr. Y strongly believes that his farm is in perfect condition? His conclusion on everything is perfect was derived from his own perception of what he knows. This is solely his opinion. In this case he knows very little but he thought he knows everything. .

To him this is call perfect farm but to others it may be different. From here it shows that there are still many things he needs to learn.

On the other hand he believes he has constructed a perfect farm. The conclusion is, if he had constructed a perfect farm then there wouldn’t be Smoke..

There are many farmers out there had seen smoke but they don’t know where it came from. Even if they had found the fire they do not know how to put it off.

.

There are also some that don’t even know there is smoke in there farm.

.

Hope he has learned something from this experience and never repeat it again.
