Roving and Nesting Design

I have visited many failed farms and reckoned that one of the causes was the design of the roving that restricted Swiftlets from entering the nesting area.

.

Obviously size counts but it is not that important. There are also many successful farms that have small roving room. I had witnessed couple of successful ones that are harvesting more than 10kgs per month and their roving rooms are smaller than my store room 6x8f.

.

There are also many failed farms which have big roving rooms, more than 15x15f. So, does the size of the roving matters? Well my opinion is yes but to a certain degree. What matters most is the placement of the Entrance Hole and the second Hole to the nesting room. I guess this has never been exposed or written before.

.

A good friend of mine who is also a swiftlets farming enthusiast who is a well known person is this trade for many years yet he couldn’t find the solution to his failed farm. He has a farm of almost 4 years at a prime area and it has only 40 plus nests. He has tried almost everything from sound to aroma but it shows no improvement.

.

I have commented again and again on the design of his farm especially his roving & nesting area and yet he pays no effort to rectify them. He’s a very stubborn guy I can’t blame him I know him well.

.

The picture shows A & B, A is narrower and it is rectangular. The rectangular shape of roving influence the birds to fly in an oval shape thus the opening of the second or the third hole has to be at the 6f section.

.

As for B the size of 12x12f permits the Swiftlets to fly in a round shape therefore the hole could be opened at all sections.

.

After the birds had got used to the farm (conditioning) for A, birds would not use it as a roving anymore but as a tunnel to direct them to the nesting area.

.

So the placement of the Entrance hole and the 2^nd and 3^rd or even the 4^th (inter) holes are very important and cannot be taken lightly. Any mis- placement the farms will take a longer time for the birds to inhibit.

Before one could decide the best placement of the entrance and 2^nd inter hole that guide the birds to the nesting area he has to understand the following:

.

1) The flying circle of the birds

.

2) The majority flying direction of birds. Clock or anti clock wise.

.

3) The intended size and shape of Roving and Nesting area.

.

4) The roving size and shape influence the Nesting design.

.

5) The roving size and shape influence the planking formation

.

6) The roving size and shape influence the size of the entrance hole.

.

7) ……………………

.

The above is only a fraction of things one needs to consider before deciding the best Roving and nesting design for their farms.

I wish I could just sit down and have a Teh tarik with you all and tell everything from A-Z… well if time permits I would do that. What says you all! All we need is someone to arrange this…….

我參觀了許多失败的燕屋農場，並且總計一個起因是让燕子飞入筑窝域的設計。

明显地，大小是主要，但是它不是最重要的。 也有許多成功的燕屋農場有小的流動室。 我目擊了許多成功的燕屋農場每個月的收穫10kgs以上的，他們的流動室比我的储藏室还要小6x8f。

也有許多失败的燕屋農場流動室是15x15f。 因此，流動室的大小是否重要？ 我的看法是，但是只到某種程度。最重要的是入口洞和第二個入口洞的安置。 我想這事從未被暴露或被寫过得。

我的一個在燕屋農場很熱心的好朋友也是在這貿易有知名的人，他不可能解决他失败的燕屋農場。 他的燕屋農場在有差不多4年了，但是它只有40个窝。 他嘗試了幾乎一切，從聲音到芳香，但是还是不顯示改善。

我對他的燕屋農場設計再次评论特别是他的流動和筑巢区域，但是他仍然不支付努力矯正他們。 我不可能責備他，因为他是我认识的一個非常纨绔的人。

圖片顯示A 和 B， A是更加狹窄的，並且它是長方形的。長方形影響燕子飞行的形狀，因而在卵形形狀開頭第二洞或第三個洞的是必須要6f。

关于B， 12x12f的大小在于圆形，允許燕子飛行，因此洞可以被打開在所有部分。

在燕子對A的燕屋農場(適應)之後，燕子不再使用它作為流動，而是作為隧道指揮他們到筑窝区域。

因此入口洞的安置，第2和第3甚至第4個(相互)洞是非常重要的，並且不可能輕地被採取。 所有不妥当的安置，燕子將需要更長的时间来到燕屋農場居住。

I do not know whether the estimated Global trade at USD$ 5.7 billion accurate or otherwise but I anticipated it to be very much higher.


What about those unrecorded trade which most farmers here are doing.


So do you think it is worth to invest in this trade?


Since the trade is so huge and Malaysia is the 2nd largest exporter how come the Government has a lukewarm attitude towards this trade?


There must be something or somewhere must have gone wrong.

那些未被記錄的大多数燕屋主呢？

Small or Big Entrance Hole?

We had always believed that having big entrance hole is always better especially for new farms. The reason being is that it is easier for Swiftlets to access.

Have you seen before very successful farms with small entrance hole probably 1x 1f or 1 x2f? Indeed there are many successful farms with such small entrance holes.

.

Small entrance hole is a norm for Indonesia farms. It is a common practice there some are only 15x25cm just enough for 1 or 2 bird to fly in. One of the reason is to prevent theft.

.

Where as in Malaysia a 2x2f is considered small. With the belief of easy access and large entrance hole is better therefore most farms in Malaysia opted for Open Roof type design. With such design the opening is definitely big it could go up to 12x12ft for the birds to dive in. With such big opening it has it disadvantages too.

If the big entrance hole is the best (open roof) then why farms with small entrance holes (Dog kennel or wall entrance) are equally successful? Besides that both farms also shared the same rate of failure.

Well here it shows clearly that to have a successful farm one cannot solely rely or focus on a single factor the entrance hole only. Swiftlets farming is a package that is what I call. All factors have to come together the Micro and Macro. We can’t take anyone of them lightly. If imperfection arises we have to solve it immediately. Often waiting and watch and see first attitude would further making the situation worse.

If some problems arise in your farm and the birds coming home are reducing 10-20 birds per day. If you have the wait and see attitude for 1 month then how many birds would you lose? (10x30=300 birds).

All Swiftlets would have gone to the nearest farms around that have better environments. If you acted slow by the time you had solved and rectified the problems 300 birds would have stayed and started to make nests in your neighbor’s farms to entice them back would be futile.

For sure one thing there is a correlation between the size of the entrance hole and the sizes of the farm and roving………if you are practicing good farming you would understand what I am saying.;

我們總是相信有大入口孔特别是為新的燕屋農場總是好。原因是燕子容易飛行進出。

您是否有看过有小入口孔大概1x 1f或1 x2f的成功燕屋農場？ 的確有許多這样小入口孔的成功的燕屋農場。

小入口孔是印尼燕屋農場的一個标準。 它是那裡普遍的做法，一些剛够1只或2只燕子能飛行的15x25cm。 一個原因是防止偷竊。

那这里馬來西亞2x2f被认為小。 因此容易進入和大入口被认为是更好的，馬來西亞的多数燕屋農場選擇開放屋頂型的設計。開放屋頂型确实是大的，這樣的設計可能至12x12ft燕子能潛入。 有這樣大的開放屋頂型也是有它的不利。

如果您的燕屋農場出现了一些問題，並且，飞回家的燕子每天減少10-20隻。 如果您还是有等待和看看的態度那么1個月您將失去多少隻燕子？ (10x30=300燕子)。

所有的燕子將飞去最附近有更好環境的燕屋農場。 如果您行動了慢，當您解決了問題的時候，300隻燕子將停留，並且開始在您鄰居的燕屋農場做窝，要誘惑他們回來将会很难。

Preventing Mist from Humidifier Hitting the Planks

Mould and fungus problem are common in Switlets farm because the micro in the farm promotes and support them to grow.

.

The Rh of 75% and above and Temp of 26-30C and the dark environment are good place for mould and fungus to grow.

.

Now especially with all gadgets like Sprinkles, Mist maker, Chicken coop Humidifier, etc. to increase the Rh in farms you can’t avoid mold and fungus and they are parts of the micro habitat.

.

Furthermore 9 out of 10 farms in this industry are not using planks that are resistant to mould and fungus. Though most claimed to be the so called Meranti but you won’t be surprised it is not. For a mere Rm1600.00- 2600.00 don’t expect you get good stuff. If yes the consultant and the saw mill would have gone bankrupt long time ago. Yes they still give you Meranti but the lower grade one mixed with OT (other wood).

Good grade woods don’t come that cheap and good ones all are catered for export or to be made furniture and won’t ended up in Swiftlet farm as for export it will fetch many time higher the price.

Some may even argue that if fungus can't grow that means it is hard wood. Bird can't and don't like to make nest on hardwood (claimed by a very famous consultant). You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know whether such statement make sense or otherwise.

Swiftlets make nests in cave of hard lime stone isn't it? Isn't it contradict to statement of "birds don't like to make nest on hardwood"? What is the grove or line crafted on the planks for? for decoration?

It is for easy perching of swiftlets, so that theirs claws could easily hold onto the line or grove of the woods. With the groves and lines it doesn't matter how hard the woods are anymore. Therefore with lines and groves people now are using Aluminium, concrete and even marble as nesting planks.As long with lines and groves you can use any hard materials that are odourless, dust free,etc.

Good quality woods can be dunked in water for years and there is no sign of deteriorating. In Mushroom Farming certain woods can't be use to grow Mushroom because in Even such damp and wet condition it still can't grow mold and fungus. So if the nesting planks are of good quality woods then mold and fungus are history.

My supplier of nesting planks used to advise me to to clean the nesting planks with spray gun of high pressure water after each renovation. Imagine what kind of quality woods I am using?

So whatever it is your farm is already done, so to reduce the growth of fungus best to modify the humidifier especially the Chicken coop Humidifier (CCH) so that the mist doesn’t hit the planks directly.

.

To me the CCH is one of the best. Its long lasting, low maintenance (or no maintenance), easy to install, fast increase of Rh and reasonable price.

.

But it also has the disadvantages, noisy and strong blower that creates wind that pushes up all mist to the planks.

.

There are few ways to prevent this. One of them is a brilliant idea from one of my good friends also my reader Mr.F. He is an industrial designer himself. He modifies the CCH a unique way. He uses the PVC pipe the lower part is longer so that the dripping of water won’t fall on to the floor and wet them. I think many people knew how to prevent the mist from hitting the planks but to reduce the wetness of the floor I guess none has done that.

Some may put the CCH in a big bucket or a vinyl sheet under the CCH to prevent the floor from wet because water would sip thru to the lower floor and wet the planks.

.

This simple modification by Mr.F would solve or reduce the water dripping on to the floor.

This is the kind of initiative or creativeness we need in Swiftlet Farming. Thanks you Mr.F.

Ever since I received complaints from my readers that I seldom up date my blog, I make it a point every morning to check my email (email for swiftlets farming) and write something for all my beloved readers.

This morning I received a unique email from one of my readers who is also a new user of Love Potion.

Few weeks ago Mr.CY had personally come to S.Jaya to meet me and to collect Love Potion. He was quite pessimistic at first.

He said let me try first if it is good I shall buy more. My reply was, call me first because I may not have stock the next time you are here.

We (me & my partners) have to solute you for your great invention of "LOVE POTION".
We will call it JAMES MAGIC, it really makes wonder & works like miracle for our bird house.
We have only 13 nest & approx. 50 birds after one year of operating the bird house.
Ever since we apply your MAGIC Love Potion on 5/12/2009 for the first time, the numbers of our birds has surge up to 100 after 3 days of application on 8/12/2009.We went back to visit our bird house on 13/12/2009 to verify the improvement, this time the population has increase to over 200 birds already. Please keep me inform when your next batch of MAGIC is ready for collection....I guess those birds just got additicted to your LOVE POTION...

Mr.CY is definitely overwhelming about the improvement of his farm that has been stagnated at 13 nests & 50 birds for past the past 1 year.

That is why he is sending an email of such respond. I am happy for him that his farm has improved tremendously.

For sure one thing I am definitely not a Magician. Ha..ha..ha.. I just want to help and my love for Swiftlets Farming has transpired me to come out with something that could help the entire industry. Such phenomena are not uncommon with Love Potion.

.

The best to use Love Potion is the beginning and the end of the season as during this time there are many young birds flying around. As I had said before it is easier to capture young birds than Old birds.

.

The chances of them making nests are higher compared to old birds as old birds would have the tendency to fly back to their old farms to make nests.

.

Love Potion makes birds stay in farms. This considered the hardest and most important part in Swiftlet farming because if Swiftlets don’t stay then they don’t make nests and they don’t make nests then your investment is gone.

.

No point of having a good sound if birds don’t stay. We want them to stay and make nests. When you switched on a good sound they will come and play afterwards leave and go back to their respective farms. So a good sound must couple with good Aroma.

.

Mr. CY had used it at the right time and he had followed my instruction carefully. I am looking forwards to see the second phase of usage of Love Potion in his farm.

自后我們在13/12/2009回去參觀燕屋來肯定燕屋的改善，這次燕子的数量已經增加到200隻燕子。 請通知我，當您下批的魔術准备好….我猜測那些燕子已是對您的Love Potion上癮了… 再次感謝，您是燕屋了不起的發明者。

Water Pond in Swiftlets Farm

The purpose of having water ponds in farm is for humidity. Those days where humidifier, mist maker, sprinkler, etc were not available therefore farmers use water pond as a tool to increase Rh in farms.

The disadvantages of having ponds in farm are:

.

1. If the water proofing is not done properly it will cause leakage and water would sip down to the floor below and wet the nesting planks.

.

2. Furthermore as the number of birds increase the dropping would accumulate in the pond and causes unfavorable smell that dislike by the birds.

.

3. The licensing regulation does not allow pond to be built in farm

.

4. If the owner does not manage it well it will be a breeding ground for mosquito especial pond at the entrance or roving area. ( Swiftlets don’t really eat mosquito. It is not their diet)

.

5. The water in the pond may be hot in hot weather and the heat under the pond would transfer to the nesting area below and increases the internal temperature

.

6. It will increase the cost of renovation

.

7. The sipping thru of water also causes electric short-circuit

.

Now with so many gadgets that could help to increase humidity in farm it is not necessary to have water pond in farm anymore. I personally do not build pond in farm anymore. It will save you money it is not cheap to build a 12x12ft pond with good water proofing that can last more than 10 years.

Some of the common myths that believe by many that transpired them not to build pond at the entrance area are:

.

1) The reflections of the water may scarce young swiftlets that come and play.

.

2) Young birds that just learned to fly dare not try to enter the new farm as they afraid they may fall in to the pond.

.

3) The reflection of the water would reflex the sunlight to the entrance hole thus creation a brighter roving.

.

4) With water pond around Bats love this area and it encourages Bats to enter the farm.

.

5) Many more……………………….

Obviously there are also some believed that with the pond at the entrance it would prevent Owl to enter the farm. Personally I do not believe in this but it is up to you.

There are also many swear by it to have pond in farm. To them it is a standard procedure of success without water pond in farm the farm would fail. Think about it as I have mentioned earlier what is the purpose of having ponds in farm?

..

.Simple to increase the Rh in farm. If one could use other equipments or tools to achieve the same then do you still need pond in the farm? Think about it.

Many would drain out all water from the pond when the swiftlets population increased but the cost of building the pond can't be saved.

在燕屋農場設放水池的目的是為濕氣。 以前還沒有潤濕器、薄霧製造商、噴水隆頭等等之前，燕屋主是利用水池來增加燕屋農場的濕度。

在燕屋農場設放水池的缺點是：

1. 如果防水設施是不妥當的，那會導致漏水，並且水將啜下到下一層並且將會弄濕板條。

2. 如果燕子的數量增加，那鳥糞將會滴下在水池並且將導致燕子不喜歡的氣味。

3. 准許章程不允許燕屋農場設放水池 .

4. 如果燕屋主不處理妥當它將是的蚊子的繁殖池塘特別是在入口或流動區域。 (燕子是不吃蚊子的。) .
