Don’t They Have Basic Knowledge in Swiftlets Farming?

Reach Ipoh at about 12 noon the owner had called me earlier asking where was I. It was very nice of him coming all the way to the highway and waited for me at the road shoulder.

As I passed by the junction to Simpang Pulai, I spotted his car and followed him. He leaded me all the way to his farm.

.

I had met him a week earlier in K.L for tea where I explained to him how a good farm should be and what a good farm should have. This was the moment he discovered that his farm was in a mess.

.

He had engaged a well know consultant for consultation and the advice was everything is fine and ok. He even showed a small replica model farm house to him and he approved the whole design sighted no problem. That is not all, the consultant had visited the farm numerous time.

.

The farm is more than 80% completed now it is only for planks installation. This owner was very unlucky not only his farm’s design was totally out the nesting planks that he had bought was not what he had paid for. He has not realized it until the second comments came from his own Burmese workers who are doing the planks installation. Coincidentally the Burmese worker had worked in a Sawmill before in Burma.

One of the Burmese workers told him that in Burma this type of wood would be thrown away or use as fire wood. Sad …sad..sad….

The week before he showed a sample of Meranti planks that he had bought for comments, I told him if I were him I wouldn’t have bought it. He claimed that he bought it for Rm 3k per ton excluding transportation and lines engraving. He had bought it from a Sawmill recommended by a good friend. They convinced him that this is the best type of Meranti at that moment he thought he had got a good deal and was very happy.

I knew if I comment further it would be like adding salt on wound. I knew very well he was being cheated. I wouldn’t pay anything more than Rm 1600.00 including transportation and engraving for such grade.

This was what the owner told me, “James when you commented that my Planks were not the right type I didn’t feel so bad. Until my worker tells me that this types of plank in Burma they throw it away or use as fire wood”.

His farm was located on the top floor of a light industry lot which is above his office. He had converted it into a two storey farm. To him this is his dream farm.

.

The length of the farm is only 60ft being such length the Dg shouldn’t be located at the middle. He had initially wanted the Dg at the end of the building but his consultant advised that the middle would be appropriate.

.

I was speechless when I saw the dg, a 2 ft wide beam cut across the dg in the middle. How could this happen? Didn’t the consultant have basic knowledge of swiftlet farming?

.

This is not all, he claimed that the initial interhole between floors was 2 xs2ft right below the dg he find it strange and decided to enlarge to 4x4ft.

Right below the dg a concrete slap in the middle of the dg shaft was constructed to cover half of the dg sighted birds love small entrance to the 1^st floor.

There are so many errors, that I wanted to ask the owner to demolish the whole thing and build it again but looking at his face I pity him. He had spent so much effort and has high hope on this farm to ask him to do so it would be like suicidal.

Never mind I will help him that was what I am there for. I tried to minimize the hacking and keep the cost in mind lowest as possible. As I can’t do much about the beam thingy so I am using other ways to create a good environment that liked by swiftlets as the current design is anti swiftlet staying and nesting. Removing the beam the whole building may collapse.

It is a dirty job but someone has to do it. Revamping farm is a tough job and not easy. It is a left over shit by the first consultant that now I have to clean.

After visited so many farms by looking at the way those guys building and designing farms I bet the rate of 80% failed would reach 90% or more in a short period of time.

Swiftlet breeders in Malacca to know fate by end March (from Star papers)

MALACCA: Swiftlet breeders operating within the historic city’s World Heritage Site heritage zones will know by the end of March if they will be allowed to stay put or have to move out.
.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said new guidelines on swiftlet breeding would be tabled before the Cabinet later this month and the approved guidelines enforced once they are gazetted by March.
The state government had previously not allowed the breeders to operate within the heritage zones and they were given until Dec 31 to move.
.
However, he noted the state still reserved the right to refer the matter to Unesco’s Committee on World Heritage Site, if swiftlet breeding would have a negative impact on structures within the heritage zones.
“If they say okay, then we will allow it. If not, we will follow their advice,” he said before chairing the state exco meeting yesterday.
.
He added the state would also heed protests by residents who live near houses used to breed the birds.
There are some 100 swiftlet breeders registered with the Malacca Birds Nest Merchants Association, with 17 operating in the heritage zones..

Meanwhile, Malacca Heritage Trust vice president Michael Benerji said swiftlet breeding should not be allowed in the heritage zones.
.
“Their presence is not conducive to the old structures that are used as birdhouses,” he said, adding the breeders must look for alternative sites.
.
However, he added that the authorities must assist the affected breeders to encourage them to relocate.

參觀用Love Potion的燕屋農場

這個週末我会到霹雳參觀几个燕屋農場然後回来，第二日到Kuala Lipis、Jerantut、Temeloh和Mentakab。

Touring Farms that Use Love Potion

I will be travelling this weekend to Perak visit few farms then the next day heading back to the central and to K.lipis , Jerantut, Temeloh and Mentakab.

To Perak I shall be stopping over at Ipoh visiting a new farm which is going to be in operation soon. The owner discovered that there are flaws in the design of his farm after having a discussion with me.

Unfortunately the building is already 90% completed, I shall see what I could do to minimize the hacking if needed.

He had indeed showed the design to a well known person in this field for comments. The well know person see no flaw in it and approved it.

The second entrance hole was located in the wrong side even an amateur would have noticed it. The Dg was placed on the wrong side of the building. All these were the basic things all farmers should have known. Anyway I shall find out further and give necessary recommendation.

To the east would be touring farms that have been using Love Potion since last year. I was invited to witness it myself how these farms achieved beyond expectation growth within a very short period of time. The owners have recorded the activities and the growth in his log book (when and how he uses Love Potion). It was few hundred nests within few months. I shall not say much about it till I take some good pictures…seeing is believing.

The owner praised Love potion for what it has done. Not only 1 particular farm but there are few farms that shared the same results after using Love Potion in these areas. I shall write about it in my next post.

In fact I was there Last month but I didn’t write about it because 2 of my cameras simultaneously can’t function the moment I enter one of the farms. …..It was weird...It was like haunted….. Both my Sony and Canon camera malfunction. I thought it was the battery. I had always brought along spare battery and camera. Then I thought it maybe the cameras then I inter-change the batteries yet it doesn’t work.

After a short while my Sony camera switched on by itself, I was surprised but at that moment it doesn’t strike my mind about weird thing. I told myself how it could happen like this.

I took few shoots and later to discover that it is all blanks. I had visited countless of farms before, this is the first time such strange things happened. Never mind I will be visiting it again this time.

Besides that I shall be also visiting 2 unperformed farms and see what I could do to help to improve them.

如果燕字不飛行朝向出口，當他們看見您的时候，並且还垂懸在上面或在高音揚聲器之上，這表示他們喜歡您的燕屋農場。

某些师傅也許忠告您不要參觀您新的燕屋農場至少6個月里。 他們声称如果您參觀將嚇唬燕子。 因此，如果有漏水，电線問題等等您将會浪費6個月的时间。

Birds Inside Farm During Day Time

The number of birds that enter your farm and play at your nesting during day time would indicate how potential your farm is going to be in near future.

.

Often for new farms during the day time it is hard to see many birds playing inside the nesting areas other than at outside of the farm at the Pooling area (external). Most of the Swiftlets are attracted to the new sound from the new farm few would try to enter farm but exit immediately in few second. The adaptation process period would takes couple of months before they would get use to it. The longer period they take to adapt to it, it shows the farm has flaws in its design.

Rarely you would see Swiftlets fly deep inside the inner part s of new farm perhaps you would see one or two flying erratically the moment they see you off they go heading for the exit.

.

Go and visit your farm during the day and observe the number of birds that come and play. See how many did fly inside and play at the nesting areas. If you see many of them inside the nesting areas this shows good sign.

.

If the birds don’t fly off heading for the exit when they see you and many of them hanging above or at the tweeters this shows that they like the farm.

.

Some Sifus may advice not to visit new farm for at least 6 months. They claimed that the visiting would frighten the birds. So if there are leakages, wiring problem, etc then you would have wasted 6 months.

.

I definitely don’t buy such advice. For new farm the first 6 months is most important. Any problem arises should be rectified immediately otherwise birds won’t stay. This is the most crucial time where I apply Aroma (Love Potion) to create an environment that liked by birds, tuning the sound and checking the wiring and making sure the farm is fully operational without set back. With everything in proper Swiftlets will take a shorter time to get adapted to the new farm.

I would visit the new farm every 2-3 weeks once. Later on 3-4 weeks once for maintenance. It is an ongoing thing that we must not neglect.

這些是外在的因素我們是沒有办法控制的，因此好好的選擇區域，在您决定购買商店和改轉成燕屋農場之前。大家有好燕屋！

The More the Better?

Many farmers believe that building a farm in an area that has many existing farms would have added advantage. Their farms would be easily successful especially in areas that many of its shop lots had been converted into farm

There are many birds in these areas everybody wants to own a farm here believing failure is evitable.

Did they ever think that this is battle ground? Did they ever think about the disadvantages that associated with it?

Many claimed that having more farms in an area is better as our farms could capture all those young birds. Who are capturing whose birds? Do you have the ability to do so? Or others farms are capturing all your young birds.

.

Some of the things that may affect your farm in these areas:

.

-Sound war, birds are confused with the loud sound from every farm. All sort of sounds are being played that included using Stress sound to attract birds . If your farm is next to such farm then you are in trouble

-Frequent changes of sound from farms’ owners that have very little knowledge about swiftlet sound. If a weird and bad quality sound is being played every week from one of these farms it will affect your bird’s population especially your farm is next to them.

-Farms that always do renovation every other week. The hacking and knock of wall would affect birds next door.

-Put and erecting netting, wire or structure on top of the roof that affect the flying route of birds and obstruct birds from entering your farm's entrance hole.

-Building additional floor next to your farm.

These are the external factors that we have no control of, so choose an area well before you decided to buy a shop lot and convert it into a Swiftlet Farm.
