Taking Advantage of the Weather

Hot weather is not that bad anyway. It tells many tales about our farms. This is the time to know whether your farms have been built to withstand the weather. If you visit your farms at this time of hot season you will see things that indicate whether your farm has been done properly.

I just got from my farm which I built 13 months ago. My last visit was in early Feb 2010. It was a routine maintenance visit which I apply Love Potion and making sure the sound and the timers were in running mode.

There were plenty of birds inside. There were so many of them some even hit me. From my judgment they were all young birds. Many of them were in pairs hanging on their half made nests. It was about 3 pm. The outside temperature was around 37c. Those stayed inside are to avoid the blazing heat and to make nests. In fact this is the beginning of another breeding cycle. If you see many birds in your farm at this time it shows good sign. I am pleased with the farm’s performance which located in a Non- Prime Bird Zone.

There were 89 nests, half cup and above size excluding nest marking. By looking at the numbers of birds in the farm even in such hot and dry weather, I anticipated when the rain comes the number of nests would be in double by end of May.

If your farm is not done properly with such extreme weather all your birds will look for farm that has better micro to stay. Your loyal birds and young birds shouldn’t be leaving your farm, if they do it shows that your farm’s micro has problems.

Some of the sign are:

1) No increase of patches of birds shit

2) Birds shit dry up

3) Reduce of birds in farm

4) No new nest marking

5) No birds playing

6) ….

7) ….

Those who are skillful in Swiftlet farming would take this opportunity ( hot weather) to capture as many young birds as possible and when the dry season ends the young birds would have stayed permanently .

When your farm is too hot the mortality rate would be high too. By nature the Swiftlets are smart enough to look for farms that have better micro so that their off spring will survive. Neither too hot nor too cold is good for the eggs. With extreme weather the embryo might die.

If your farm micros are good now is the time to enhance the smell or Aroma of your farm to attract the young birds. Now sound would be secondary as there is no rain around.

Humidity plays an important role but make sure it is cold humidity not hot humidity. If your farm’s temperature is too high with high humidity it would push up the temperature. The humidity (mist) became hot mist like Steam Engine.

Don’t be misguided by those who have very little knowledge in swiftlet farming. It doesn’t mean when the temperature is high you should increase your humidity. There are correlations between them but to a certain extend only.

Do your routine maintenance (Aroma) and observe the changes with this you won’t go wrong.

Bigger and more Sophisticated and better Camouflage Farms .

While some are so frighten till their balls got stuck to their throats because of the recent talk about guidelines on the other hand for those who knew this trade well are making bigger and more sophisticated farms and better camouflage.

So who do you want to be? A Looser or a winner?

Winners are often risk taker. If you think your balls might one day get stuck to your throat then my advice to you is that you better don’t get involve in Swiftlet farming. Is better to keep all your money in the bank as least at the current rate u would get around 2 over % per annum.

Ha..ha..ha.. Successful Swiflets farmers have got very big balls. I could assure you this, it will never get stuck to the throat because it is too big to be there. That is why they keep on building more farms immaterial what affects them.

Guidelines....... Does it Matter?

I have received many emails regarding the guidelines for Swiftlet Farming which some claimed that it will be implemented soon.

Some even ask me what my reaction is. Well all I could say if illegal gambling, loan shark, bookies, etc could exist then what is Bh which does no harm to other.

I had seen the drafted plan many times sort of immune to it. This is not new it has been dragged on for many years. Every time new set of guidelines will come out with illogical and non practical ways of implementation to squeeze the swiflet farmers and to put them in disadvantage situation. In fact this is the purpose of the guidelines and it has hidden agenda. You know why? Because we all don’t look the same like Swiftlets.

Unless all of us look the same like A. Fuciphagus or C.Maximus then no one could distinguish us other than by looking at our nests then all swiftlet farmers would be in peace. Let’s dream this will never happen.

For sure one thing the Bh will survive. No matter what it is. If illegal gambling, loan shark, bookies, prostitution, corruption, etc could continue to exist even with harsh punishment so what is Bh.

For those who think that if they follow the guidelines they will be safe, don’t be naive. It’s not about the regulations it is beyond this even building one on an agriculture land will not be easy or safe.

Free standing’ Standalone , means the agriculture land has to be converted to commercial land before you can build a farm. Often converting status of land takes time and lots of money and lots of hassle. After converting, the land premium will kill you.

It needs the concern of so many parties. Where every department concerns will squeeze the juice out of you. You may end up giving up.

So does it mean if there is restriction all farmers should give up swiftlets farming? I guess not. I for sure won’t give up. There are ways to go around it. In fact most have been doing it for long time. That is why we call this Boleh Land.

Hot Weather

Happy Chinese New Year to all! Gong Xi Fa Cai!

I guess most have started work. During the long festive Holiday I went back to my home town in the North.

The weather is bad real bad. Information from the metrological department, some areas reach 36C. Ponds and lakes are fast drying up this is bad news for those who are in swiftlet farming.

It was hot and dry and I could felt the hot and dry air pinching my skin. I couldn’t image if this hot air filled the whole internal of a farm.

Swiftlets love water that is why when it rains you would see many of them flying and playing while other birds would avoid it or find shelters when rain. Birds could catch flu easily and I guess that is why they call it bird flu but Swiflets are immune to this the more it rains the better.

With rising temperature farms that have no insulation on their walls and ceilings will be the first to be affected. Having many exhaust fans making it worse.

In such situation if farms that already have nests the number will reduce, if it is a new farm birds that have stayed would leave too. In fact I have visited farms that have an internal temperature of more than 36C. With such high temperature I wonder how swiftlets are going to make nest.

Of course some may argue that they have seen or heard of farm that has a temp of 36c or more still managed to have nests. I do agree, but how many nests would there be perhaps less than few nests.

I always believe in prevention, even in places like the Northern Perak which has the highest rain fall in the whole of Malaysia I still make wall insulation. Never know, perhaps one day there might be drought too. It is hard to predict the weather It is too risky.

Last year was good. The whole year has plenty of rain evens those simply made farms that have no heat insulation still managed to have nests. The average temp throughout the year was about 28C. But this year it will be different. I anticipated there will be many failed farms because all birds would leave farms that have poor micro and fly to farm that have good micro.

Winner takes it all scenario will prevail. Those successful farms that have good micro would continue to have more nests and birds and the poorly done ones would have less. We certainly can’t change this, 10% of the people holds 90% of the world’s wealth and 90% shares the 10% wealth. Welcome to the real world and the World of Swiftlet Farming.
