The Position Of EH (Entrance Hole)

Does it matter where the entrance hole is facing? Yes and No…and depends. It is more important that the entrance hole facing the direction (area) of birds searching for food than the direction of birds coming back.

Many years back perhaps 20 years ago many would avoid placing the EH (Entrance Hole) facing East or West. This is caused by the fear of the Sunlight shines directly into the farm.

I don’t see this as problem as our mind and intelligent are flexible, we could solve all these sunlight things by using partition and design an internal system that could accommodate this problem.

Those who know how to do it and understand the usage of partitioning consider the Sunlight problem doesn’t exist at all.

Sometimes we couldn’t avoid placing EH at certain directions. This happens to those ready built shop Lot units where the owner has no control over the position of the frontage of the shop. Or sometimes for a Standalone where the landscaping doesn’t allowed us to place the EH as we desire.( wind, hills,etc)

From here it doesn’t mean we could no longer build a good farm. We could always counter this by coming up with a good design that adapted to the building position or the external environment.

I personally wouldn’t bias towards North or South or West or East for EH position. All I look for is where the birds are. As for reducing the early morning or the evening sun I would use the internal design and the size of the EH to counter the bright beam.

Don’t forget for newly built swiftlet farm light intensity is very important. We need certain amount of bright light in newly built farm to attract large amount of birds to fly in to play. The more Birds that fly into the farm to play the higher the chances they stay. If it is too dark young birds wouldn’t venture deep inside the farm because they have yet to get use to the new environment and often frighten.

This often confused many Swiftlets farmers. Those who had visited successful Swiftlet farm would argue that most of the successful swiftlet farms are very dark. One could hardly find the way out if without a flashlight. In certain ways they are right. Therefore the darker the farm the better it is and they hold to this principle and later to discover that their farms failed without any nests after many months.

Have you ever heard about this phrase in books “Have a big EH for new farm and Later as the population increased then Reduce the size of the EH” Do you understand what it means? They didn’t elaborate didn’t they? The books thought that all swiftlet farmers are smart perhaps otherwise.

Why as population increased then the light intensity could be reduced? New Farms should have big EH so that the farm is brighter, easy for young birds to maneuver, not easily frighten, etc. When Population increased that means it could be 1 or 2 years later by this time the residents would have got used to the darkness and the flying path. So even with a small EH that has reduced the light intensity birds won’t find any difficulty to fly in and out as they had got used to it.

Obviously they could also use echolocation but this only applied to mature birds. Mature birds are not as easy to attract as young birds. If a newly built farm is too dark then it is inviting trouble.

The future of a newly built swiftlet farm relied very much on young birds not old and mature birds. Therefore when you build a Swiftlet farms make sure it has all the good qualities in it that could attract large number of young birds.

As for the position of the EH, well it could be any place or direction you want provided you understand and know between the light intensity for young birds and Mature birds. I am sure you all have seen many very successful farms EH facing West as well as East and also many failed farms EH facing same.

How To Use Love Potion Effectively

Pour into Humidifier

Spraying on walls & Entrance Hole

The Bird droppings are all over the place and getting thicker. It shows Birds had stayed.

Many of my readers often call me asking how to use the Love potion effectively. Some even ask is it OK to pour it into a bowl and leave it in the farm?

Well there are few ways to use Love Potion effectively.

1) Spray onto wall 1-2 ft below planks. Turn spray Pump nozzle to sharp spray type. Spray a line or in zigzag manner as you walk slowly. Let it drips from walls and the smell will fill the whole farm. After completed spraying the walls then spray on plank (Please see No: 3)

2) For new Switlet farm spray on all walls of the Roving area. Also onto the entrance hole. This is to attract birds to fly in to stay (especially young birds). With Love Potion birds feel comfortable and safe thus staying and make nests. This is most important for new farm. Spray on t all the 2^nd and 3th holes (doors) to the nesting area also the partitions then on the planks directly. It would help birds to stay and make nests fast.

3) Spray on nesting planks directly. Love potion can be sprayed on planks. Make sure the nozzle of the pump is turned to Mist spray for planks. Press the pump 1-3 burst about 2-3 ft away. No too wet. You could spray more if the nesting plank is of good quality meranti which is in dark brown color.

4) Pour onto the Humidifier. Pour about 100-200 ml into the bowl of the Chicken coop humidifier. This would make the entire farm fill with Love potion.

5) Do not mix (dilute) water for spraying on walls and planks.

Love Potion is good for New and Old Swiftlet farms. For new Swiftlet farms Love Potion helps making young birds to stay and make nests. For Old farms that have few hundred to thousand of nests it helps to increase population and pushes up the nest growth further to an unbelievable stage.

Love Potion has been in the market for more than 2 years now. It has been used in many successful Swiftlet farms all over South East Asia. Those had used it before know how powerful it is.

Competition is stiff now with many farms everywhere. Your farms can’t just rely on traditional ways of farming. You have to do something extra. Your farm has to stand out amongst all.

互连孔

以上的照片是我的讀者從Kelantan寄给我的。 他问我為什麼多数的燕屋農場運用樓梯作為互连孔 ？它背后的原因究竟是什麼？

我的回復是。不管互连孔的位置在那里，最重要的是它必須位于對燕子容易飞入的地方(往飛上与往飞下)。

有几个因素影響在燕屋農場安置互连孔。 就说出几个，譬如是燕屋農場的設計，光的密度、燕屋農場的大小(有多少層樓)等等。

所有這些影響互连孔的安置。 明显地，互连孔可以安置在互连孔的任何地方，但是，錯誤的安置會影响较低的层楼沒有燕子居住。 在許多情况下，较低的层楼需要更长的时间才能有燕窝。

它是没有錯誤的使用樓梯為互连孔，除非它是位於一個戰略的地方。 在許多情况下，樓梯是位于大廈(商店)的中间部分。 理论上，位于中间部分的互连孔是没有太大的益处的，因為那不是燕子的飛行道路，除非它是位于前面或後面。

Black PVC Cover

This is another type of PVC cover where you could get it at the Hardware shop. It is good for 4inch pipe. It was used by my contractor at one of the Stanalone farms.

It holds the PVC pipe tightly as it holds from outside and it is hard to come out. It is tough and best of all it is black in color.

To reduce the light density from the ventilation pipe, use the black cover for external and use the grey color cover for internal. It would reduce the light density in farm.

Young Swiftlets need light to guide them to fly in and out of the farm. The light from Vent-Hole would create confusion if it is not under control. If the Vent-Hole light is too bright young Swiftlets would fly to the Vent-hole and circling around it and couldn’t find the way out.

Secondly to reduce brightness you could also paint the inside of the elbow with black color paint. I would recommend matt finishing type as it doesn’t reflex under bright light.

Inter- Hole

The above Pictures were sent to me by a reader from Kelantan. He was asking why most Swiftlet farms utilized the staircase area as Interhole? What was the reason behind it?

My reply was. It doesn’t matter where the interhole located most important it has to be located at an area that is easy for the birds to access (fly up and down).

Few factors influence the placement of interhole in farm. To name a few there are the design of the farm, the light density, the size of the farm (how many storey), etc.

All these somehow affect the placement of the interhole. Obviously an interhole could be placed anywhere in the farm but the consequences of wrong positioning would resulted the lower floor not occupied by birds. In many cases it takes years for the lower floor to have nests.

It is not wrong to use the staircase as Interhole provided it’s located at a strategic area. In most cases staircase is located in the middle section of the building (shoplot). Theoretically it wouldn’t be good for interhole to be located at the middle section because that is not the birds’ flying path unless it is located at the front or the back.

There are cases where birds only occupied the top floor of a 3 storey building and the 2 lower floors have none. There are also cases that birds occupied the lower floor only and the top floor has none.

The first cases very much have to do with the wrong placement of interhole while the second one is very much related to temp, light density and RH problem.

For a 3 storey farm the lower floor (ground) is the most challenging one. If the interhole is place wrongly it takes years to see nest in it.

Why most utilize the staircase area as interhole? The main reason is to save cost and works, secondly they do not understand the importance of birds flying path.

The bottom line is making sure the interhole is at the right position not just because the staircase area is easier to work or out of convenience.

Weather Changed

( Flood in Segamat)

It is back to Swiftlet farming again after a long CNY holiday. I guess all of you had a wonderful celebration.

Flood is everywhere before CNY and now most places are hot. The weather has changed. Global warming effect is here. The whole world is affected. Australia experienced the worst flood in 50 years. Some African countries experienced snow which never happened before.

What if one day the weather in Malaysia changed? The condition that wouldn’t allow swiftlets to live and they have to migrate to other countries.

Have we thought of that? Well it is possible and it would happen. It is a matter of when…..The sign of global warming effects already here.

So if you want to invest into Swiftlet farming it has to be now. It is better to start now rather than waiting, because later the environment condition might not permit it.

Secondly as we are waiting more new Swiftlet farms are being built. Everyday there are hundreds of new farms coming up. The longer we wait there would be more farms to compete with.

So start today earlier the better. I still remember 10 years ago my relatives once told me that he is late in this industry. That was 10 years ago. He said he should have started 10 years earlier. That is 20 years which around 1991.

Even 10 years ago people already consider late to go into this industry. So if one waits a few years from now it would be consider…….dam….

It would be harder to own successful farm as competition is stiff. In some towns the increase in number of Swiftlets farm is much higher than the growth of Swiftlet population.

So do it fast!
