A Good Laugh Thanks to a Farmer that I knows Everything

It is not once a while anymore, it has been quite often now I received calls from Readers asking weird questions. In fact it is not weird questions but silly questions. From the questions they asked I knew how well and how little they know about Swiftlet farming.

With such growing number of people like this going into Swiftlet farming how can the Swiftlet farming successful rate improve? I guess it would be very hard and it is a sad thing for this Industry.

One of the classic questions asked by one of those who called me is as follow:

“Mr: James I want to revamp my farm. Birds don’t build nests in it. Could you help me?

“I replied who is it on the line? Oh I am Mr.T from Kelantan”

James: Who built the farm for you?

Mr.T : Oh… I built it myself …..(Very proudly said) but I don’t know why not a single bird goes into the farm since I opened the sound.

James: Not a single bird ….that cannot be. Usually the moment we switched on the sound birds would go in within minute.

Mr.T: There are no nests in it. How come? I cannot wait I want to see nests!

James: Well there are lots of things you need to make it right before birds start to make nests. Perhaps you have done it wrongly or there are something that you may have overlooked.

Mr.T: No..no.. Mr. James …I know what I am doing. All the things are correct. I am very sure. As far as I am concern the farm is very good. I designed it I know what is good and bad.

James: Since everything is good then it should have bird nests inside. How long have you started the farm?

Mr.T : Oh …..just 2 weeks only.

I almost wanted to vomit blood talking to such person like this.

James: 2 weeks only??????? And 2 weeks you expect to see a full cup nests?

Mr.T: Yes of course. If not 2 weeks then how long? I expected by 6 months time I can harvest at least few 3-5 kgs of nests.

James: Just to build the nests, Birds takes up to 40-45 days (depends on season) that excluding adaptation which sometimes takes months before they come into the farm to stay. In 2 weeks after opened the sound you want to see nests? You’re very skillful and knowledgeable ha….and well respected ha?

Mr.T: I know quite a lot one, among our group I am the most skillful. My friends always say that I know lots of things about Swiftlet farming that is why I designed and built the farm by myself. They encouraged me to DIY. Now I headache because not even one bird going into my farm.

I laughed till almost drop dead.

James: No wonder no birds go into your farm……probably you are too skillful.

Mr:T : Really ah? Too skillful birds don’t make nests in farm? If not 2 weeks can see nests then have to wait how long ?

And the conversation goes on and I also go on laughing…..ha...ha.ha….and I have the best laugh.

Imagine with such shallow knowledge he thought he knows everything and undertake the construction of the farm what would be the outcome?..... FAIL 100% Guarantee Fail!

Don’t even know the habitant and the behavior of the birds and daringly designed a farm. That is why the failed farm rate is going upwards.

Most who undertake to build farm by themselves always thought that they know the most. Can’t blame them this is human nature.

There're many like Mr.T, I guess 70% swiftlet farmers are from such category. Hope you all don’t follow Mr.T's footstep.

我收到了很多電子郵件關於傾斜的狗洞在燕屋農場里会把風推擠更加入的部分。許多人用這樣的設計因為他們不瞭解燕子的行为和燕屋農場的環境。 (燕子怎麼飛行，燕子喜歡和讨厌怎麼的屋内环境等等。)

燕屋農場不是好像囚禁飼養一样。 燕子是自由出入燕屋農場和漫遊天空的。 它不是好像养雞或羊一样，一旦鸡寮被修好了我們可以迫使它們停留在鸡寮的任何一个部分。

在燕屋農場它却不能牽強…我重複一遍它是不可能牽強的。 我們不可能強迫大自然，因此我們不可能強迫眼子停留。 所以您尽管您已经竭尽全力在燕屋農場，莫名其妙地，如果燕子發現它是不適合，它們就不會停留並且不會做窝的。

您需要瞭解在書本和研討會之外教您的。 常识將告诉你，您不可能在一夜之间由股市赚一大笔錢就因为您從書店購買了一本关于股票投资的書本。 您也不可能，在完成商业课程的几个月之後您就會贏得几十萬的钱。

Understand The Swiftlet Behaviour

I received many emails regarding the slope at the Dog kennel that pushes wind into deeper parts of the farm. Many people go for such design because they do not understand well enough the behavior of Swiftlet and the farm’s enviroment. (How they fly, what they like and dislike in term of micro and so on.)

Swiftlet farming is not captivity breeding. Swiftlets are free to come in and out of farms and roam the sky. It is unlike chicken or goat farming which once a coop is built we can force them to stay in any parts of the coop we want.

In Swiftlet farming it cannot...I repeat it cannot be forced. We cannot force the nature hence we can’t force Swiftlets to stay. That is why you may have done the best of farm somehow if the Swiftlets find that it’s doesn’t suit them then they will not stay and make nests.

You need to understand beyond what books and seminars taught you. A common sense would tell you that you cannot and will not over night make money from Stock market after reading a book on stocks investment that you purchased from a bookshop. Neither after completed a business course and the next few months you would earn few hundred thousand.

Swiftlet farming is related to nature therefore if we want to understand or find a solution to a problem we must first look at how nature interrelated to the micro, the birds, etc.

Well most who made mistake in farm’s design and micro management didn’t take into consideration of other factors that are interrelated. That means whenever one factor is changing, it would also affect the other.

We can’t force the nature so we can’t force the birds to fly where we want. All we could do is to accommodate what Swiftlets want rather than what we wanted. Therefore by understand such nature we could build a farm that is suitable for Swiftlets.

Most would build farm rely on own perception. It is very much doing for themselves rather than for Swiftlets. So it is uncommon to see many failed farms.

One could be a well known person or have many years of experiences in Swiftlet farming but if he has not grasped the in-depth understand between those factors then he would subject to mistake also.

Mistaken for Flying Path

I have visited many failed farms and observed many mistakes in it. One of them is the faulty design which commonly repeating by those who build farms. If you are not skillful enough you would never noticed it.

Let me ask you how do you create a good Micro? A good micro mean it constantly remains the same being the temp, humidity, aroma, etc. Tho it may change but the variant of changes should be small. If the changes are above the tolerable gap then the whole micro would turns upside down and Swiftlet would avoid this farm and never make it their home.

There are so many things being internal or external that could affect and influence the micro. One of the forty things that could affect the micro is…… wind movement. Therefore when designing a farm one must bear in mind about the wind factor.

Sadly how many Newbies, Sifu, Semi-sifu, well known Consultants are skillful enough to know this or should I say how many actually think of this before they design a farm. To your surprise most of them knew very little about the wind factor, some don’t even know that the wind factor existed.

Thru my experiences I’ve spoken to many of them and surprisingly not many know about the wind factor but they were engaged to build many farms. (Even built more than me)

Let’s look at the Picture A:

The reason being for building a slope claimed by them was to push the birds to fly inside. Some called it flying path. No..No..No.. this is not flying path. They have mistaken it.

This is the wind flying path not the birds flying path. The slope would direct the wind into the farm like an airplane wings thus making the Micro upside down. The slope constantly creating pressure thus pushing the wind further into the nesting.

Once the micro is jeopardized then that is the end of the farm. Perhaps there would still be Swiftlets making nests in such farm but the number would be small.

Picture B:

The 90dg wall at the Dg helps to slow down the wind from reaching the nesting. It works as a barrier. When the wind hits the Dg wall it would slow down and directed to the roving area. The oscillation would be at roving and it stop there. Unlike Picture A , the nesting area is less affected thus birds feel more comfortable in farm B

After visited many failed farms I noticed how little all these so called farm builders and designers know. If one can't even understand and differentiate between Birds flying path and Wind factor could they build a good Swiftlet farm?

越多是不是更好呢？我的讀者问了我这个问题「James, 每一层有400臺高音揚聲器是否太少呢？」

您會盼望我如何回答呢？ 我的回復是您為什麼不安裝1000臺的高音揚聲器呢，因為多數人的想法是越多高音揚聲器就是越好的。

我是不會驚奇看到在所有的角落和每個板條之間有高音揚聲器。 是不是按装許多臺高音揚聲器，然後几个月后就可以有一千个窝在您的燕屋農場？

燕屋農場的命運成功或失败是不是單獨地依靠高音揚聲器的数量？ 如果是的话，我們就不需要那些喷雾器，芳香，防热材料，分成等等。

為什麼人们那么主重高音揚聲器的数量？ 因为它不需要技巧、经验和詳細理解，聰明等等，他们只需要安装它們在板條上。 他們只需要放他们的焦點在高音揚聲器的数量，那就是越多越好。 這不需要用脑，只需要安装。

他們沒體會到的是，它不是在于高音揚聲器的数量，它是您安装在那里来創造一個活跃的環境，以便，當新的燕子飛行入燕屋農場时它們感到舒適和安全。

Internal Tweerter War

Now not only we have the External sound war but we also have the internal sound war. The External sound war is between farms. Whereas the Internal sound is between the own himself and his common sense and his perception and what he actually understand about Swiftlet sound.

Is more the better? A reader called me and asks “James is 400 tweeters per floor too little?”

What would you expect me to answer? Well my reply would be why don’t you install 1000 tweeters instead since most thought that the more tweeters they have in their farm the better it is.

I won’t be surprise to see all corners and between every each plank there will be tweeters. Would it be that simply just fix as many tweeters as possible then your farm would have thousand of nests next few months?

Would the destiny of a farm whether success or fail solely relied on the number of tweeters? If yes then we don’t need those Humidifiers, Aroma, insulating material, partitioning and so on.

Why people are going after the number of tweeters in farm? Because it doesn’t need skill, experience and in-depth understanding, intelligent and so on to have them fixed at the planks. All they need to do is just focus on the number of tweeters the more the better. This doesn’t need thinking, just fixing.

What they didn’t realize is that, it is not the number of tweeters that counts it is where you fixed them to create a lively sound environment so that when new birds fly into the farm they feel comfortable and safe.

Swiftlets farms would performance better if tweeters are installed properly at strategic location rather than relied on the number. We are talking about quality not quantity. In Swiftlets farming it is all about quality. When the concept is about quality eventually quantity will follows.

One simile would be: Nesting Plank, immaterial how many roll of planks you have in the farm if all of them are of poor grade wood which infested with fungus then it is of no use. In the other hand if the planks in the farm are of good grade woods which resist fungus then even it has just few roll all would have nests built on them.

Where else like Rh control and partitioning you need to know how to control them and where to put them it requires lots of thinking. Putting them in the wrong place it would affect the internal environment. Most would think that as long there are many tweeters in the farm they are a step forward. Therefore from the average of 50-80 tweeters per floor some have installed up to 400 tweeters. Some even use the expensive good quality tweeters. For sure one thing there is benefit of using such number of tweeters. You know what is the benefit? Let’s think……….

The main benefit is that the seller of tweeters is very happy. The more tweeters you install the happier the tweeters seller is. He gets all the benefits.

Using expensive tweeter has its advantages but if you fixed them all in huge number without strategically locating them then it no different from using the cheap one. The cross over sound from every angle would make it hard for the birds to identify the dominance sound thus creating confusion. (Will explain later. I am sure you have heard about many old successful farms stop all their internal sound after certain period).

So bear in mind not the number that counts it is where you fix them. If success of a farm is solely relied on the number of tweeters then all of us would be very happy. Then there will be no failed farm. Think about it because in Swiftlet farming you need to do lots of thinking and use your common sense.

They blamed on the location, the birds and the equipments but not themselves. It is 99% the farmer’s fault. How can it not be the farmer fault?

This morning I received an email from a Reader, you know what he asks? “James how do I know that your Love Potion is not Fake”.

I almost drop dead and laughing my lung out. I bet his farm is 100% failed. Well otherwise he wouldn’t have ordered Love Potion to salvage his farm.

By asking such question you know how ignorance he is, can’t even differentiate this then how he could build or manage a farm. There were many occasions farm’s owners who have been operating Swiftlet farm for many years still ask question like “James are those birds on the electric wire are Swiftlets that make edible nests?”

It is uncommon to hear all these stuffs. I think before one wanted to get involves in Swiftlet farming they should ask themselves are they the material for this industry? Knowing oneself is very important not everybody could be a scientist, lawyer or an accountant. If you are not …you are not. No matter how hard you try you will not get there because you are not the material for such.

For those who are not familiar with Love Potion, allow me to give a brief history of Love Potion.

Love Potion has been in the market for more than 2 years now. It was invented by me. (Perhaps I should go and patent and trademark it, good idea). Thru experiments and researches I found this formula. The idea is to increase nests and bird population in farm. The criterion was to increase the number of nests in the shortest period of time.

Over the years it had helped many farms in Malaysia and was sold in many neighboring countries including Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Philippine and Brunei.

Love Potion has been used in farms that have few thousands nests and newly built ones. The results were unbelievable.

Due to its popularity and effectiveness in pushing up bird population and nests. Many unethical people have tried to imitate Love Potion to earn some quick buck from those newbies and those who are ignorance.

Somehow whatever they did was only short term because they do not have the formula of Love Potion. They could only copy the packaging but the content.

There were many well known figures in this industry ( including some from neighboring countries) have approached me and asked for the formulation of Love Potion and sadly I turn all of them down.

You cannot imagine actually who these well known figures are. If I mention their names you would shock till drop dead.

They could copy the packaging of Love Potion but not its success.
